and beth like considers this for a moment and is like “damn it has been every guy” and alison’s like “you sure you’re not a lesbian” and beth’s like “nah i’ve just never been into sex” and cosima’s like “you know there’s a word for that right?” because cosima is the Official Gay Mentor of the clone club

Beth coming out to Krystal!

You know that it’s wrong to think that Krystal looks like your ex-girlfriend, but she’s blonde and in red lipstick and in heels that make her just enough taller than you that, god, she really kind of does. (You don’t say this, because you’re trying to pull of that twin thing and you’re in public, and throwing that out there is maybe not the most sisterly thing to say, but, seriously, she winked at you through the window of the Starbucks, so it wouldn’t be the worst thing that happened between you.)

“We’re not actually twins, right?”

“No,” you say, and Krystal positively beams.

“Thank god!” she says. She takes a sip of her strawberry smoothie and looks at the ceiling. “Oh my god, Beth, that would be so freaky. Like, I know this is weird, but twins are, like, really weird, you know?”

“Yeah,” you say, and you kind of want to laugh, because this girl is relieved to be a clone, which is somehow the best response you’ve gotten after Cosima’s almost horrifying enthusiasm.

“Okay,” she says, “so there’s… how many of us?”

“I’ve talked to… six, I think, and myself. There are more in Europe, but she’s–the, um, the one of us from Germany–she’s handling things over there. so, uh–” You laugh, really, this time, because you still can’t actually process how many yous there are in the world. “Kind of a lot.”

“Okay, so, like, I don’t know if you’re super weirded out by personal stuff…” She trails off, like she has a sentence to finish but needs an answer in the middle of it. You don’t want to give one, because you really are, but Krystal is vibrant and vulnerable and scared, and you don’t think you have it in you to say so. Still, she looks on expectantly.

“Uh, no,” you say. “Go for it.”

She smiles. “So, I’m pan, right? Like, into people regardless of gender? So, um… is that, like, a… a clone thing?”

You’re definitely regretting the personal thing now, but Krystal looks almost excited, and you owe her something for destroying her life. “The scientist’s probably your best bet on that one,” you say, which, while true, is (no pun intended) a definite cop-out.

“But, like, what about you?”

“She, uh, she helped me, too, Krystal.” She’s finishing her smoothie now, and you feel a little too aware of the straw scraping the bottom of her cup, but she’s looking at you wide-eyed and hopeful, and you really hope this helps her. “I’m asexual,” you say, “so, uh, you’re not… alone, I guess?”

 “That is so sweet!” Krystal says, and she’s smiling so widely you barely recognize yourself in her. “Like, ever since you called me, I’ve been super nervous, but it’s like, you’re such a good person, Beth. I’ve gotta go, like, two minutes ago, but that was the best thing you could say.” She stands up, smooths her skirt, and hugs you.

Five days later, you get a handmade card with a watercolor ace flag and an invitation to brunch with her friends.
