How to learn

1. Easy is easier to remember

While learning something, try to make it as easy as possible to understand. A really long sentence with a lot of (yet) unknown words is just not easy to learn, Try to have short sentences. Don’t put a lot of information in a small space. Try to keep it as simple as possible, so you can relate to it better.

2. Use your own words

If you are learning definitions and they don’t need to be precisely memorized, reword it. Using your own words or even changing the structure of a sentence makes it easier to memorize.

3. Break it into pieces

If you need to memorize a specific definition break it in pieces. Don’t try to learn all the sentences itself but just parts of it. A very easy Example:

“A contract is a voluntary, deliberate and legally binding agreement between two or more parites.”

1. voluntary

2. deliberate

3. legally binding

4. agreement

This way you will associate these words with the term “contract” which will be easier to keep in your mind.

4. Use numbers

Use numbers instead of dots or other ways of breaking the information into pieces. This way you will associate a number to each information and be able to revive the missing words. Just like in the exampel above; you will remember that there are 4 individual pieces for the definition of contract.

5. Pictures can help too

Just like numbers, it is also easier to associate pictures to something. If possible draw something on your flashcards or notebook. For the definition of “contract” you can draw two stickfigures shaking hands on top of an piece of paper which has the letters v,d, lb, A on it. Of course there is no limit to your imagination and I am pretty sure you’ll be able to find nicer ideas in your own field than I just did =)

6. Know what that means

A lot of times we read something and then get frustrated because we didn’t undestand anything. Mainly the issue is that there is a word (or a few) we just don’t know what the meaning is so that the sentence in its total seems hard to understand. Finding out the meaning of one word, esspecialy if it’s something returning in the text frequently, just helps so much understanding everything else. So just take your time to understand one word so you can understand everything else es well.

7. Quiz yourself

Finding your own way of learning is very important but not easy. I found out that studying with Quizlet is helping me a lot. It is not only a way to learn with flashcards, you can also quiz yourself even while playing games. I would definitely recomend to check it out. It is free you only need to sign up. Also you can use it on your Laptop and your phone. It will sync within seconds.

These are just a few tips. I hope they are helpful for you. Mostly I found myself struggling while studying for my exams and these were the things that I figured out helped me in times of frustration. I hope you don’t just like or reblog this, but instead try to actually see if one (or more) are helpful for your way of learning. Sometimes there are just small issues that block us and kill our motivation. Try to eliminate those and you will be fine.

Different ways to study

A few of you have been asking about ways to revise (that’s not just making notes). Here’s a list of some different techniques you can use to revise/study:

  • Notes - making notes is the ‘standard’ way of studying - summarising information from textbooks/revision guides into your own words
  • Mind-maps - making these is a great way to organise ideas and link different ideas
  • Posters - big and colourful posters are a great way to summarise info as well as a more fun way of working
  • Teaching - teaching others (anyone who will listen to you will do) is a great way, as it will really show whether you really know the info by how well you can explain it to someone who knows nothing about it
  • Videos - watching videos can be a nice and easy way to revise, and are useful for visual and/or auditory learners
  • Podcasts - you can download and listen to podcasts when you are walking to school etc. which is a great way to get extra revision in, and they’re great for auditory learners
  • Flashcards - these can be useful for making really concise notes, as well as making Q&A or key word and definition cards - they are also really compact so you can take them with you
  • Group study - working with friends can help bounce ideas off each other, bringing up things you might not have thought about alone - you will all have different strengths that will help each other out
  • Past questions - doing past papers and looking at mark schemes will help your timings and application of knowledge/exam technique
  • Write (don’t type) - making notes on tablets/laptops is fine, but when it comes to writing practise essays always write because that’s what you will be doing in the exam (unless you use a laptop for some reason) so it’s best to practise for timings etc.
  • Further reading - reading articles and books around the subject areas will give you a broader idea of the concepts and a better overall understanding
  • Accents/voices - some people find using different accents or characters of voices helps them remember things (in the exam you can recall info because you remember you said it in an Australian accent for example)
  • Key word lists - making lists of words and definitions can be useful, as using key words in context in essays/questions is what gets you the higher marks
  • Post-it notes - writing key ideas on post-it notes and sticking them in places you go commonly (on the fridge, by the light switch, in your bedroom, on the TV etc)
  • Apps - there are loads of great apps that you can download to make notes and flashcards etc. as well as apps for generally increasing your productivity - see my studying apps post here
  • Songs/mnemonics - making funny little songs to remember processes can be really useful, as they really stick in your head
  • Charts/timelines - depending on the subject, making timelines and charts can be really useful as a different visual representation

Wow great summary on study techniques.

Sometimes your motivation to study comes from the most weird ways. F.e. I keep studying because there are these pens I really want to throw away but I can't so I just continue to use them in order to finish the ink so thats why I study.

You know what pisses me off? when people have a different approach to things than other people but they get recklessly criticized for being the way they want which maybe isn't the way most people do. Like there is this bride who is wearing a nice simple wedding dress but she is told that it looks like a simple dress and that brides should look 'special' on their wedding day and wear some type of princess dress or that things that some other brides do which is ok for them but just this bride isn't into that so why not just tell her she looks beautiful in this dress she is wearing and was so happy with herself and glowing when she came out of the dressing room ? Why are some people so mean I dont undestand
