Inuits in the Arctic can survive perfectly on a plant based diet 😤

indigenous hunting is like, the ONE kind of hunting that shouldnt offend anyone and yet

listen, i fucking love whales. i do. i have advocated against cetacean captivity and whale hunting since i was like 13. i HATE whale hunting. but have you ever seen the prices for food in a grocery store in indigenous areas, if they even have one?

i can guarantee no vegan has ever paid $22 usd for a bag of grapes, and you cannot farm that far north. they can forage for some foods, but its not enough to sustain themselves and get a nutritionally complete diet. this isnt just cultural or religious practices (although cultural and religious practices are significant and shouldnt be stripped from them), its literal survival. indigenous people hunt in a very sustainable way (a single bowhead whale can feed an entire community for a year), they arent out here killing a bear just to hang it on their wall. they are trying to survive. subsistence hunting by native tribes is 100% morally correct, even if (like me) the thought of animals dying makes you sad. fight against the japanese whaling fleets who kill hundreds of whales under the guise of research and then sell the meat. fight against wealthy americans who kill animals just to stuff them and put them on their wall. fight against seaworld and their disgusting cetacean captivity practices. but dont come at native people who depend on subsistence hunting to survive. fucking colonizers.

Discourse entirely to the side, I’m here for a little girl who hears, “This is going to be dinner for us,” and just tries to take a bite out of the tail.  I mean, that’s peak toddler logic, right there.  Relatable to any parent ever.

(Also, indigenous practices are not equivalent to trophy hunting and thirty dollar bags of grapes are nothing short of fucking appalling.  But mostly cute toddler.)

Who is reminded of when colonizers stole kids from indigenous people just like this when they committed cultural genocide against us

similarly, this reminds me of when christians used the holocaust as an excuse to kidnap jewish children and forcibly convert them, then refused to return them to their families. this shit’s a very common factor of genocide & should set off every red flag possible

^ wow, never learned THAT in school. Wonder if they had some sort of reason for leaving that part out.....Hmmmmm.........

No, I think the man who funded fascism all across America and was rich off of the direct exploitation of his workers is the inhumane one here.

LAST CHANCE: NO MORE THAN 19 VAQUITA LEFT

The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a small porpoise endemic to Mexico and one of the world’s most endangered animals could face extinction within a year if illegal fishing nets continue to be used. Numbers of the vaquita, which only lives in the upper Gulf of California in Mexico, may now have dropped to less than 9 according to research published in Royal Society Open Science.

Despite adoption of an emergency gillnet ban in May 2015, the estimated rate of decline remains extremely high. Estimated total population decline since 2011 is nearly 99%.  Researchers estimate fewer than 19 vaquitas remained as of summer 2018. From March 2016 to March 2019, 10 dead vaquitas killed in gillnets were found.

Historical distribution of vaquitas (yellow hatched area). The Vaquita Refuge is outlined in blue. The gillnet exclusion zone (where fishing with gillnets is banned but other types of fishing is allowed) was given straight boundaries (dotted white) described by single latitude and longitude to facilitate enforcement. An enhanced enforcement zone (red) was recommended by CIRVA in the area where the remaining vaquitas are thought to spend most of their time that also has high levels of totoaba fishing effort.

The ongoing presence of illegal gillnets despite the emergency ban continues to drive the vaquita towards extinction.

Several studies implicate shrimp fishery bycatches to be responsible for the decline of the vaquita. Illegal fishing with gillnets for another critically endangered species endemic to the Gulf of California, the totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldii), is also linked to the decline of the vaquita, which is captured in for its swim bladders used in unproven chinese medicinal benefits

Why is no one talking about what happened in São Paulo yesterday?

The sky turned completely black around three in the afternoon partly because of smoke coming from the Amazon rainforest, WHICH IS 2300 KILOMETERS AWAY FROM THE CITY, where the government has greatly increased the amount of land being burned for profit. People are getting sick, animals are dying, native territory is being lost to the flames.

This is what the sky looked like in my city yesterday, in the early afternoon.

It got so dark so fast the city had to turn on the lamp posts and night lighting.

Please talk about this. Reblog this post, non-brazilians especially.
