Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named “Central Asset Recovery Professionals,” or as Oliver put it, “CARP” named after “a bottom-feeding fish.”

After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.

Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.

Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.

You dont have to be rich to do a bit of this actually

RIP Medical Debt is a charity (and therefore takes donations). They buy the rights to medical debt and then forgive them. So far they've forgiven over 1B in medical debt.

So a little ray of hope for someone out there today.

Welcome to Andi’s inspiring 3 room apt. It’s full of color, lots of storage, and all the furniture is used.

Andi says that the toy collections fascinates guests and confesses that the framed pictures are mostly from Google images. (Good tip!)

More bookshelves in the dining room. Orange & white layered sheer curtains give the room a warm glow, and of course, there are lots of plants.

Lots more shelving and storage in the sewing/work area. Love the red sawhorse desk and the vintage turquoise nightstand given new life with paint and new knobs.

The small kitchen is colorful and has so many storage ideas.

Pretty, vibrant bedroom and my favorite piece in the whole apt., is this little cube nightstand with a toy kitchen inside.

Even the bathroom is fun and bright. I love Andi’s apt.

Think about why it’s illegal to hire a hit man.

All you’re really doing is speaking and giving someone money.

It’s legal to speak.

It’s legal to give someone money.

Even if they actually complete the job, you’re not the one who committed the murder.

So why is it illegal to hire a hit man?

Could it be because inciting violence is not protected under free speech?

And if that’s the case, why should free speech protect Nazis advocating genocide?

when james baldwin said “you think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. it was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.” I felt that big, big time

It is 100% this. People need to get out and vote then. If they want things to change… get the hell out and vote Bernie!

Your vote MAKES A DIFFERENCE !

So, like, 100% what @danddamage said, but also…

Voting actually doesn’t work as well as you might think in the South…because gerrymandering is a rampant problem.  It’s constant.

I remember once in Texas the demographic was changing a little too much for the state senate, so the Republicans tried to redraw districts.  The democrats, knowing that the vote would stall if they were not there, took off in a bus to get to Oklahoma.  And the State sent the fucking Texas Rangers to escort them back to force them to participate in a vote they knew would not pass.  Like, this issue of one party vacating so a bill will stall happens in more places than one, and on both sides of the aisle, but no state gerrymanders like Texas.  And no region gerrymanders like the South.

The thing is, Southerners do vote.  They’re passionate.  It’s a duty, not a right.  But like the tweet says, “being held hostage by right-wing state governments.”  That’s what it looks like.  They vote, but their votes don’t matter.  Because the state governments make sure they don’t.
