Wanted to write a more considered piece, but word limits, so: cross-promotion of the Godzilla/IKO sort doesn't belong in Magic. Increasingly sophisticated marketing invades our movies, our music, our books, even - w/ social media - our conversations. Must it also pierce into the planes of our imaginary worlds and steal a piece of what makes Magic *magic*? I hope this perspective is at least considered within the hallowed walls of my favorite coastal sorcerers.

How do others feel?

Avatar

a) I love love love the Godzilla cards.

b) I totally respect other people not liking the Godzilla cards.

c) Y’all calling this “marketing” is fucking bullshit?  It’s no more marketing than any other goddamn card that people like and will buy.  I want my Mothra.  Telling me that somehow this is “sophisticated marketing” “invading my free time” is frankly really insulting.  If you don’t like them, don’t buy them.  Sure, I get the complaint about them replacing normal cards on the buy-a-box promo--that’s totally fair--but it’s still not “marketing”.  It’s just essentially a single card alter that you don’t like that other people do.

d) everyone who is like “I don’t want to play against this”? do y’all not play against people who use alters?  I mean if you don’t want to, sure, that’s your prerogative but WOTC giving us what are essentially “Official Alters” isn’t really doing anything to the likelihood that people will play them.

Stop trying to take away things people like with specious arguments and especially stop insulting people who like those things.

Which Fairy tale are you most excited to see represented in the next set??

Avatar

Probably in this order:

  1. Rumpelstiltskin
  2. Jack and the Beanstalk
  3. The Frog Prince

I’m VERY excited for Eldraine! (Oh, and I’m curious to see if Rowan and Will Kenrith have an origin story anything like Hansel and Gretel…)

I see your Hansel and Gretel and raise you The Snow Queen :)

Another trope in Arthurian tales is the Lady of the Lake a magical being that often gives Arthur his magical sword. Here we have a merfolk or fae offering what looks to be a magical blade.

“Listen – strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”

In all seriousness though, I do REALLY hope there’s a card inspired by Excalibur in this set.

fashion designers put a halo and wings on a model and call it an ‘angel’ look. where are the wheels within wheels? the multitudes of staring, glowing eyes? the trumpets of rapture? the bloodied swords? where is the fire, the incomprehensibility? the ear-shattering “do not be afraid” that makes the audience fear god and have prophetic visions? extremely unsexy of the fashion industry to not realise what the viewer really wants

there’s a wild double standard with how people will say liliana redeemed herself while nahiri is an irredeemable monster, and it’s entirely determined by how attractive and palatable each of them is to straight men

i am actually curious about this one

i...really haven’t seen this?  like i’ve definitely seen Discourse about both of them!  and maybe it’s just that i’m fortunate in who i’ve interacted with but most of the time afaict people who think nahiri is irredeemable are just really upset because innistrad was their favorite plane (which...i don’t think is fair but is understandable) plus liliana was given the narrative allowance of actually taking a (what i still think is relatively minor but hey it exists) step towards redemption

like narratively i wouldn’t call either of them irredeemable (lili more, probs) but i would say that nahiri hasn’t been in any way moved towards a redemption arc while lili has

i mean i’ve def seen the fandom be shitty so maybe i’ve just been lucky in this one! (and is lili really more attractive to straight men?  is their taste that bad?  sheesh wtf my dudes bi enby/demiboy here and y’all that is some Bad Taste)

What was Dovin’s reason to ally himself with Bolas, especially during the events of WAR? How did he know he wouldn’t fall victim to the Elderspell (like Domri)?

Avatar

Dovin is a lackey who can’t see his own flaws despite seeing them everywhere else. I’m not sure a definitive reason has been given. Presumably Bolas promised him he wouldn’t?

Avatar

idk i feel like it was literally never given, like

dovin’s not the nicest character ever by any means but in Kaladesh he definitely seemed to have good intentions?

his characterization in WAR was bizarrely different imho

I think the given reason was that Dovin can appreciate a plan, and Nicky B is like. The Best Planner, so Dovin was like “Yeah!! This is fine!!!”

sarkhan meeting Bolas: oh wow I love dragons, and this must be the best dragon so I will worship him now

sarkhan after Bolas proves to be unworthy of worship: hey man this sucks

dovin meeting bolas: oh man, I love having everything all figured out and this dragon must be the perfect mastermind. nothing will ever go wrong again. I will worship him now

dovin after getting two throwing stars in his eyes: hey man this sucks

To be fair, Dovin’s actions at the end of Aether Revolt were already odd.

He sabotaged the Hope of Ghirapur and then skips town rather then holding to his job. And all this AFTER finding out about Tezz and his machinations.

My point is that he wasnt out of character in WAR cause it already was his character as of the end of Kaladesh block.

that wasn’t the impression i got, to be honest, but i am not certain how carefully i read the end of kaladesh so that’s fair!

Could we get a Boros-colored planeswalker who's earnestly heroic? Boros was pitched to me as being the guild of heroism and righteousness (In the words used, "Do you prefer characters like Superman and Captain America to characters like Batman and Iron Man? Boros.") but none of the characters that have cards that have the colors feel like that. Huatli was a xenophobe, Ajani was on a quest of vengeance, and Nahiri is a monster. There's nothing to really heroic to latch on to with planeswalkers.

Avatar

That’s a fine request. Note that Superman and Captain America are both monowhite. Thor would be a better example of the red/white hero you’re taking about.

Avatar

Saying “Ajani was on a question for vengeance” is…is pretty outdated?  He’s, if anything, on a quest for redemption right now.  Plus heroes often have flaws–Nahiri, sure, isn’t a hero, but Huatli seemed to be pretty heroic?  (Granted I only skimmed most of her stories so I could be wrong.)

To say that about Ajani is completely accurate. His card for that part of his story is even called “Ajani Vengeant.” It’d be outdated to say he still is on a quest for vengeance.

yeah what I realized later was that he’s not RW anymore, I forgot XD

it’s been a long week
