Wanted to write a more considered piece, but word limits, so: cross-promotion of the Godzilla/IKO sort doesn't belong in Magic. Increasingly sophisticated marketing invades our movies, our music, our books, even - w/ social media - our conversations. Must it also pierce into the planes of our imaginary worlds and steal a piece of what makes Magic *magic*? I hope this perspective is at least considered within the hallowed walls of my favorite coastal sorcerers.
How do others feel?
a) I love love love the Godzilla cards.
b) I totally respect other people not liking the Godzilla cards.
c) Y’all calling this “marketing” is fucking bullshit? It’s no more marketing than any other goddamn card that people like and will buy. I want my Mothra. Telling me that somehow this is “sophisticated marketing” “invading my free time” is frankly really insulting. If you don’t like them, don’t buy them. Sure, I get the complaint about them replacing normal cards on the buy-a-box promo--that’s totally fair--but it’s still not “marketing”. It’s just essentially a single card alter that you don’t like that other people do.
d) everyone who is like “I don’t want to play against this”? do y’all not play against people who use alters? I mean if you don’t want to, sure, that’s your prerogative but WOTC giving us what are essentially “Official Alters” isn’t really doing anything to the likelihood that people will play them.
Stop trying to take away things people like with specious arguments and especially stop insulting people who like those things.
