Every summer has it’s own story - Chapter 2

We had emptied the car a while ago and we’re sitting outside on the porch, catching up. Daryl, Michael’s dad, had started the barbecue and was busy preparing the food. That was also a tradition. Daryl never stayed longer than the first morning in Byron Bay. He had a busy job, but this was a kind of woman-holiday for our mothers. On the first night, Daryl would always set up the barbecue and would take care of everything food-related. The other nights we would take turns to do those tasks. Mia and Harry were lucky though. The mothers thought they were too young to do chores like cooking, doing the dishes and all that kind of things. They could enjoy their ‘careless’ lives for a little longer. Harry was de 10 years old son of Anne Marie Irwin. Besides Harry, she also had a son of twenty, Ashton and a 13 year old daughter, Lauren. This family was known for always postponing packing. Everything was left to be done ’till the last moment, which was the reason why they were the last ones to arrive. Normally they were just in time for dinner, which they - of course - wouldn’t miss for the world. Daryl was one of the best cooks. ‘Lot, how were your last weeks of junior year?’ Karen asked, interested. I smiled before I told her how the seniors pulled all kinds of pranks on the last day. It was the first time anything was done like that and it seemed like a great success. Maybe I could do the same next year with my class. My mom and Karen started talking about their senior year. I looked at Michael for a short moment and noticed him looking at me as well. He rolled his eyes and I couldn’t help but chuckle. Right, at that moment, there were sounds coming from the inside of the house. I turned around and saw Anne Marie with her kids. All placing their bags down, in the middle of the living room. We all stood up to go and greet the Irwin family. ‘How’s Lottie doing?’ Ashton grinned, while he embraced me. Ashton was always cheery, open for anything and everyone loved him. And I had to admit, it seemed like he got cuter every year. If that was even possible. Some people would probably say; puberty hit him hard. His younger sister Lauren and mother followed, greeting me with a hug. Even little Harry gave me a hug, which was a first I think. As always, we helped to unpack the car. They had a big one, which meant a lot of room. Every year they succeeded in filling every inch of it and not using the half of the stuff they packed. Although it has appeared to come in handy once or twice. My mother was often the one to forget to pack something, but then we would find it somewhere in a bag of the Irwin’s. Because our perfect timing, we were just done with unpacking when Daryl called out. Food was ready. I’ve gotten hungry and my stomach was waiting desperately for food. Daryl had put some chicken on my plate and I sat down quickly to devour it. ‘What are we going to do this first night here? Anyone wants to play a game?’ Anne Marie asked. We were done with dinner, the dishes were done by Daryl and Karen and we were sitting in the backyard with the whole group. The air was pretty humid, but it was nice to sit outside in a short and a tank top. That was one of the things that I liked about Australia. It was summer during the holiday season and when it was winter here, the northern hemisphere were celebrating their summer time. Although winter wasn’t really cold. Compared to the temperature in the summer; yes, it was cold. But it normally would be around twenty degrees. ‘I was thinking about taking a walk on the beach. Sydney is cool, but no beach is better than Byron’s.’ Ashton started. In the corner of my eye, I saw Mia jump up. Mia loved the beach and I maybe thought she loved Ashton too. But my mother said it wasn’t a good idea if my little sister went to the beach right now. “Tomorrow’s a new day”, was her argument. ‘Yeah, I think it’s better if Harry and Mia stay with us. The rest of you can go, though.’ Anne Marie added. I looked at Ashton and Michael, who both had stood up. My brother Benjamin also stood up to go to the beach. We practically lived at the beach. Our house was in a street that led to the beach. You would think it’s always really busy here, but there were so many roads that led to the beach that this wasn’t the case. Quickly I decided to go too. I actually wanted to go read in my room, but I had the whole summer time for that. The first night always set the mood for the rest of the six weeks we stayed here, so I had to make it fun right?
