The pause that followed the kiss was one Haru spent in content stoicism. His blue eyes flickered from Rins’ cheek, to Rins’ eyes, then down to the ground. He licked his lips, relishing in the glory of his accomplishment. Kissing Rin felt like winning in a way he had never understood until now.
Haru shifted his focus from the cement and back to Rin, appraising him. He noted the flush in the other swimmers’ cheeks. His gaze fell to Rins’ lips and he mused offhandedly if they tasted like saba. He found himself wondering why he hadn’t kissed him there instead.
Was it unusual that thoughts on whether or not he’d done the right thing didn’t concern him? He didn’t wonder about the future of their friendship. A selfish, almost childlike curiosity had replaced any feelings of unease. If his actions were ones he previously had been concerned about, he no longer found himself in a state to reflect on it. The teen felt very much in the moment, and the moment was presenting him with a Rin Matsuoka that he was certain none but him had the pleasure of knowing in this way. Maybe it was because, to a certain extent, within Haru was a deep possessiveness. It wasn’t something he made obvious. But in the same way Haru felt as though the water belonged to him, so he now too felt about Rin.
A trace of these feelings presented themselves in Haru’s gaze during that small span of time, but they disappeared when the teen realized that his companion was now physically and audibly reacting. He fixed Rins’ crimson gaze with his own, wondering if his thoughts betrayed him.
Hardly a moment had passed before Haru felt himself being led by the other swimmer. The tense atmosphere of the past few hours seemed to dissipate, and the brunet fell into the familiar step of their friendship.
Whatever Haru had expected, it had not been this.
Thoughts of his previous actions were temporarily set to the side as he drank in his surroundings. The sun was creeping past the horizon, exaggerating every movement around him. The Splash! exhibit instilled a sort of existential yearning within him. From the merchandise, to the crowds, to the delicious smells and lanterns that highlighted the shore; the swimmer felt alive with the energy surrounding them. His body felt light, almost electric because of it. Or was that due to something else..?
He said he would show me a sight I’d never seen before…
Haru looked to their joined hands, and sneakily laced their fingers together. He wondered how Rin would react to this gesture at the same moment he was prompted to raise his gaze skywards.
… I felt like I really did see it.
As Rin urged them to continue on, Haru squeezed his hand in response, trying hard to communicate that he was grateful, but finding it awkward to voice.
