“Same. Mother never liked fast food. She said it would eat away at               our insides and fill our heads with fat.”
He made a face at that but continued to eat. The serving was bigger than expected, but it was meant for sharing. He would have gotten a smaller portion if she hadn’t joined him. It did seem a little rude if he ate without offering her anything. Thomas dipped a fry in some mayonnaise, completely oblivious to the rest of the people inside the fast food place. The speakers were blaring the latest pop song, and one of the customers nearby was humming the same tune.
Quite a normal scene, but one he wasn’t used to. Had he been home, he would be wearing a suit and attending one of his parents’ boring tea parties. Which often involved the older ladies trying to get him interested in their single daughters, all in the hopes of snagging the only Sharpe heir. Compared to that chaos, this place was HEAVEN.
“She was wrong, of course. I’ve been having one of those double decker                 burgers and I feel fine.”

That comment warranted a laugh from Nica, covering her mouth to save from spitting the fries everywhere. “I can’t say I’ve heard that one before. It’s pretty unique.” Her mother used to use old wive’s tales in an attempt to scare her into fearing the outside world in a similar way, but she’d never heard fast food transferring its fat into your head.

Nica took anther fry from the plate before leaning back into her chair, the metal protesting taking her weight again. She hadn’t intended to suddenly be sharing food with the man, but he had been the only one not to protest when the invalid wheeled herself up to the table. In fact she didn’t often eat when she came to the restaurant. But the silence of her home would get to her sometimes, her mind conjuring up anything it could to fill in the quiet.

And what it came up with was not something she wanted being dredged up from the depths of her memories.

Nica chuckled again, sucking the excess salt from her fingers. “You brave soul.” She joked. “I would avoid the Royale though. It’s got deep-fried pineapple in between two layers of bacon.” She added, nose wrinkling in disgust.

I'm 100% okay with your muse having a history with mine.

You want their families to be rivals? I’m down. They dated the same person? Cool. They have the same classes together? Neat. Our first interaction doesn’t need to be our muses first interaction. I like having already developed relationships, adds a little something. Plus, gives the opportunity for a “how did they meet” thread later on.

That he could relate to. Thomas didn’t have a ‘normal’ childhood. He didn’t get to play outside with the other children, his toys were carefully chosen, and his constant companions were an au pair, Theresa, and his older sister, Lucille. Though he couldn’t miss what he never had, there were times when he wondered what that kind of childhood was like. Wishful thinking on his part.
Seeing as she had the same kind of childhood he had, he leaned back and sighed. At least he was getting to experience what it was like to eat fast food. The fries were supposed to be greasy, but that was what made them so good.

“Did you get to eat these fries though?”
Thomas slid the fries out of their paper holder and onto the tray so that they could share.

Nica accepted the silent offer of fries with a small incline of her head, taking one off the tray and chewing on it slowly. They were extremely salty, and overly greasy. But it was in a good way that grounded NIca in the reality of the moment.

Image

Fries of this variety were rare in her youth, as her mother didn’t want to leave Nica on her own and she didn’t trust the outside world enough to allow home delivery. But there was the odd occasion where her resolve would waver, and her daughter’s constant nagging would get to her.

She certainly didn’t get to eat anything like this in the asylum.

“Sometimes.” She replied with a small smile, taking another one from the tray. “They were sort of special occasion only though.” She added, adjusting her position in her chair before taking another fry. “What about you?”

"What was your childhood like?" [ from thomas ]

The question caused the invalid to pause. Her immediate gut reaction was to say that it was horrible, that her mother was controlling and manipulative (she was) and that she never got to truly learn about the world through trial and error (she didn’t)

But...

Nica knew why her mother did the things she did. She couldn’t blame her entirely for the paranoid mania she protected her with. She didn’t hate her mother, not truly.

“It was...sheltered.” Was her eventual reply.

Nica had always been fascinated with water since she was a child. Being bound to her chair meant that she had never had the luxury of experiencing what it was like to swim. Oh, she’d tried when she was younger, but her mother was strict on her when she was a child, and even in her teenage years she didn’t even trust Nica to have a bath on her own.

Nica’s fascination with large bodies of water have remained right through her formative years. She was both curious as to what could live beneath the surface and also inspired by the beauty it could invoke.
