ok i've gotten one too many 'this is why i don't read sci-fi' comments so here's a rec list for the people convinced all science fiction is bad and misogynistic (with something for everyone, hopefully!):

and finally, not all older/classic scifi is written by crusty old white guys who hate women!!! some iconic authors i'd particularly recommend looking into are ursula k. le guin, octavia e. butler, samuel r. delany and vonda n. mcintyre 🥰

Anne McCaffrey’s work is excellent if a bit dated-you can tell she was an Irish Catholic woman in the sixties and seventies, but it’s not overt. The works done with her son are ok but the things he’s done on his own since are not as good, plain and simple. Sorry bro. My personal favorite was the smaller Harper Hall trilogy, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums though I’ll note dragondrums was set up by the story told in song/singer and otherwise was rather different. They were designed for younger readers to a degree but they’re also lacking the very slight homophobia of other Pern books. However, her books are great overall for subverting traditional female roles to work *for* her female protags rather than against them.

For my non uk followers wondering wtf is going on:

- prime minister is a cunt. Had like a bajillion scandals

- latest one was apparently one two many. Two extremely important cabinet members resigned within minutes of each other

- within the next 24 hours about a third of the government resigned

- one resigned live on tv. Five resigned with the same letter to save time

- previous record for government resignations within 24 hours was 6 and it it was in the 1930s. We are, as I’m writing this, on 45 resignations

- Michael Gove, another cunt who is hated by all, was going to resign but was sacked instead in what appears to be the prime minister going “you can’t quit you’re fired!”

- government meetings are being cancelled because there is literally nobody in those departments anymore

- despite literally everyone begging him at this point to leave, including his most loyal little evil henchman, prime minister is refusing to resign in disgrace as is traditional for British prime ministers

- prime minister genuinely seems to be in complete denial anything serious is happening

- people are calling for Larry the Cat, no. 10’s chief mouser to be the next prime minister. When asked for comment, he licked his arse on live television

a lot of young girls need to realize that keeping friendships alive gets so hard after high school/uni and that you have to actively nurture your friendships if you want them to last yes even the friendships of 2 decades….. your 20s are so disorienting and trauamtizing no one can afford to take friendships for granted… everybody worries about not finding a romantic partner lets start worrying about being friendless by the time you hit 30

hey uh. I didn’t learn this lesson. I’ve spent years and years at a time without the kind of friends that interact with you every week, or even every month. Without the kind of friends that you see often and know well. During my 20′s and into my 30′s I let my friends get to arms length and before i knew it they  were all miles away.

I’ve reconnected with some people who have shared the strongest bonds with me, which is good, it’s very good, but those few people all live in different states or countries now, they have kids or intense careers or their time is filled by lots of everyday friends, and so I go months at a time without seeing or talking to friends.

I finally had to schedule weekly phone calls with two or three just so I could maintain SOME kind of friendship.

But it has become a very lonely life.

Don’t assume you’ll always have friends, or that you can always make new friends. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that friendships don’t require purposeful effort to maintain. When you day-dream about your best possible future, don’t forget to include specifics about your friends being there, and then when you work toward those dreams, make sure some of the work is to keep those friendships active.

In my state the percentage of teachers leaving the profession in 2022 was 7.2% (up from 4% in 2020). 

As a high school teacher at a fairly calm school I feel like I don’t have room to complain, but I really feel for the elementary and middle school teachers. They’ve always been asked to do so much with so little, and they build the foundations that we add to at the high school level.

This is also why it is critically important to vote in your local elections for school board and your state elections for your education leaders; they play an enormous role is support for students and staff (hourly and salaried positions.) Please vote this year.
