You’re not still sore because I didn’t fall for the princess of Glowerhaven?
Ariel and Eric (from The Little Mermaid)
Colored pencil by Halla Kang
You know, Eric doesn’t get enough credit for being the first and only Disney prince to canonically be a daddy!
I like the little mermaid. This is not funny or interesting, just a little fact about your ol pal Neil
Isn’t it great? Perfect day at sea

Eric’s rough textured hands rubbed the back of his neck. He shimmied in the plush chair, trying to find a comfortable position. The King of Corona insisted that the sailor prince meet Rapunzel when they concluded yesterday’s meeting. Eric over-heard rumors from neighboring kingdoms of the missing princess and how she finally reunited with her family. It was truly a blessing that she returned after all of those years later. He couldn’t imagine losing a child, especially that long. Although he and Ariel did not have any children yet, it still struck a chord within him to imagine that mourning feeling.
His knee bounced in rapid succession, gazing around the elegant sitting room. His hazy blue orbs took a keen notice to the gorgeous view of the kingdom projected outside a window. A wistful sigh escaped his lips. Oh, how he wished he could enjoy the beautiful day. The sunlight cascading over the small villas, the birds chirping a melodious tune, Max bounding on the cobblestone sidewalk.
In a flash, Eric bolted up from his seat and pressed his face against the window. Sure enough, the loveable sheepdog ambled down the sidewalk outside. “Max!” he shouted, tapping on the glass. The large dog, oblivious to Eric’s frantic calls, rounded the corner. He muttered a slew of curse words under his breath and sped out of the room.
A swarm of questions whirled through his mind as he strode towards the outside doors. How did Max escape Grimsby? Well he wasn’t nicknamed the ole beanpole for no reason, Eric mused. The sailor prince mentally noted to make sure that Captain Sayers looks after the dog from now on, regardless of his so-called “allergy”.
“Max!” Eric called for the umpteenth time as he pushed open the doors. His eyes scanned the surroundings of the outside palace grounds. No sign of Max anywhere! Was he just imagining that Max was outside? Eric shook his head. Coursing down a few steps, he stopped when he heard panting. He whipped his head to the right to see Max trotting towards two girls. He suspected one of the girl’s was a captain of some sort. He knew for certain, however, that the other woman was the princess. Eric inwardly groaned, biting his lower lip. Some princesses were not too fond of animals, especially large animals that reeked of wet dog. Without another moment of hesitation, Eric sprinted towards the dog.
“Max!” Eric shouted, catching up to his canine companion. Max plopped down next to the girls upon hearing Eric call his name. Max swished his head up at Eric, his tongue lolled to the side. Eric squinted at the dog as he crouched low and ruffled his fur. He felt slightly embarrassed upon realizing he was adorned in a regal suite and bent low to pat his dog. A faint shade of magenta flushed upon his cheeks. He cleared his throat and straightened his position, “I’m sorry for interrupting, ladies.” he apologized, bowing his head slightly. “Sometimes this mutt has no sense of personal boundaries.” he chuckled lightly. “But he’s really harmless.” he assured, scratching the dog behind the ears. His gaze turned toward the young ladies. “Am I safe to assume that you are Princess Rapunzel?” Eric piqued, a friendly smile curving on his lips.
The back and forth between Cassandra and Rapunzel continued all the way out the castle and into the warm sun. Rapunzel arms stretched out and wide, as if awaiting for the big bright circle in the sky to come bounding down into her arms for a hug.
Reinvigorated by the weather, now she knew she absolutely would not spend another second inside those creamy castle walls. The prince would just have to meet her out here and join her for a walk into town. What better way to get to know the kingdom and its future queen than with an impromptu rendezvous location change?
Just as she was beginning to speak she heard a commotion that piqued her interest. The large wooden doors that were often kept shut burst open, startling the guards on duty to pull out their swords in preparation for combat. Cassandra too went into guardianship mode, pushing Rapunzel behind and pulling her silvery weapon from underneath her powder-blue dress.
‘Max!’
Although she didn’t recognize the voice that called out, Rapunzel recognized the name instantaneously. Her bright green eyes scan the surrounding area for the large white stallion, already a greeting smile playing on her lips. Her heart raced in her chest as the blood pumped adrenaline and she jumped ahead of Cassandra. But, to her disappointment, she found no horse only a shaggy grey and white dog and the frantic man calling for him.
She gives the two a chance to themselves but exchanges a look with her lady-in-waiting. After the last year, Cassandra and Rapunzel had mastered the art of speaking like a book; where you voice said nothing at all but your eyes spoke volumes. It was a talent almost as impressive as her ventriloquy but far more meaningful.
‘Is this the prince?’ Asked Rapunzel with a straightened back.
‘Mhm,’ replied Cassandra with a raise of her brow.
‘And this is his dog?’ Her eyes flicker to the thick head of black hair and the happy-go-lucky mutt.
‘Mhm.’ Cassandra shifts her weight from one leg to the other and finally lowers her sword to her side.
‘You didn’t tell me he had a dog.’ She pouts and takes a breath more dramatic than the time Pascal lost his favorite button and all of Corona had to go into mourning.
His apology is met with a shake of her head and a delicate smile. “You can just call me Rapunzel. I was just on my way to meet you inside but it looks like fate had other plans and wanted us to meet outside.”
With a billow of fabric she drops down to her knees and runs a hand down her cheek in front of the canine with a puckered bottom lip. “You poor thing. You must have felt aaaall cooped up in that castle huh? I bet all you’ve been waiting for aaall day was to spend some quality time with the flowers and the wind and the grass and mud. Are you my little fate bringer? Respondent of wishes and dreams?”
“Well, that works fine with me, Rapunzel.” Eric affirmed, a gentle smile coursing onto his lips. “Besides, it’s a lovely day in your kingdom and we can’t waste it cooped up in a room.” he shrugged his broad shoulders in a casual manner. If there was an opportunity to discuss diplomatic matters outside then he was going to take it. He was always accustomed to delegating in grandiose lounges, but there was something about conducting meetings among the fresh air. “It’s also a perfect chance to see your kingdom’s culture.” Eric mused aloud, glimpsing at the sun emblem on a waving flag.
His mind drifted back to the brief history lesson explained to him days before his arrival to Corona. Her hair possesses magical abilities and heals all sorts of wounds with just an incantation. He could understand why she needed to be protected at all times. People could take advantage of her gift at a moment’s whim. That issue was one of the reason’s why Eric was present in her city. Corona fell into a few scuffles with other kingdoms and the sailor prince felt a need to aide his fellow neighbor.
A scoff escaped his lips. He rolled his hazy blue orbs, a dimpled smile adorning his face. “Yeah, he likes to think so.” Eric replied, peering down at the duo. Max licked her hands, almost covering her with slobber. “He’s also famous for biting sea witches in disguise.” he muttered, scratching the lovable sheepdog behind his ears.
Eric faced the other woman standing next to the princess. Her straight posture and silver armor indicated to him that she must be appointed in Corona’s royal guard. He nodded his head in her direction. A genuine smile brimmed his tanned face. “I don’t believe I’ve formally introduced myself. My name is Prince Eric Farvarand.” A small chuckle escaped his lips. “But please feel free to call me Eric.”

She sighs in relief as soon as the court had adjourned for the day. Rapunzel didn’t mind accompanying her father into the throne room to judge the grievances of their people, as she knew it was something she would eventually have to do as Queen, but she couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen the sun.
It was that morning, during breakfast in the garden but lets not worry about the details.
Quite suddenly, as she takes a corner she’s yanked around and feels the callous hands of her lady Cassandra messing about with her dress. “Where do you think you’re going? You have a meeting with the prince—”
“Cassandraa,” comes the princess’s plea. “I just want to go out for some fresh air. Some sun? Twoo seconds.”
“Your schedule is packed. You can breathe when you’re dead.”
