Update + source in english: last saturday, the Greek police shot and murdered a 20yo Romani man, and wounded a 15yo romani teenager even though they were both unarmed and that, yknow, it's illegal to murder people

His name was Nikos Sabanis.

In the statement the Greek police issued they claimed:

  • 20 year old
  • He was the driver
  • He was a known criminal with an intense record
  • They hit 5 police bikes
  • 7 policemen were injured
  • The policemen only shot to scare them
  • The claimed passenger was only grazed on his hand by a stray bullet
  • They never released the name of Nikos Sabanis and only referred to him us "anonymous Romani man"

Here's the truth that the 16/15 (sources differ, some even claim he was 14) years old released from the hospital:

  • 18 years old
  • Nikos was a passenger in the backseat and the minor was driving
  • He had a clean criminal record, he was the father of 2 children and his girlfriend is pregnant with the 3rd
  • When they were trapped, they regressed the car without excess speed
  • There are no injured cops (has since been admitted by the police station itself)
  • 7 cops shot Nikos 38 times
  • The minor was shot in vital organs by 3 bullets
  • His name was Nikos Sabanis

To actually quote the minor:

"I was driving. When we stopped, we raised out hands and they shot us. They were shooting my friend. In Aigaleo (place they supposedly stopped while in chase) we didn't stopped because we were afraid they would kill us because we had stolen that car"
"First they shot us and thenI turned the car over. When they shot I manouvred the car to get us out of there. The cops were not on the bikes (that were hit by the car) [...] We had no weapons, nothing. When I exited (the car) and started running they shot behind me, some hit the wall. I hit two motorcycles but they didn't had a driver, they had thrown them down. "

Protests demanding justice for Nikos Sabanis took place the following days and were met with police officers in riot gear using teargas against them.

Other things to note:

This is definitely not a stand-alone incident. In the last month alone there were two more similar ones, meaning stolen car cases turned into murderous attacks by cops.

In the same time period we have also seen cops shooting countless bullets to terrorize in some regions, murders of refugees, workers and cops sending people at the hospital heavily injured - not to mention the incidents we do not know of.

From the moment this murder took place, before the details were out, before the videos that we have now were out, the media started weaving a story to protect the cops that did this. Focusing heavily on the fact that Nikos was Roma, while spewing the lies that were menitoned above. The cops' attorney, A. Kougias characterized the roma community in greece as "a plague". Yesterday the cops with felony charges were released without restrictive measures.

Protests were also met with extreme violence, in some cases with the cops making sure to do their job behind the cameras, and in some without caring. They broke into buildings were people were hiding, they have sent at least 5 people to the icu with either broken arms, severe head or other injuries. In one of the latest protests, cops broke a storefront and framed protesters, in order to justify the violence they were using . All while the media says that the truth will come to light through internal investigations and legal means. We know the truth. We act.

Do y’all ever just feel like... “I’m gonna see myself out”

but just in general? like about everything... idk I’m just like so disenchanted w life rn and I’m so tired of discourse and I just want to be calm and happy but it honestly seems impossible bc I’m too concerned with what other people think of me

Honestly I’m so tired of Romani discourse, both intra-community and gadjekane. For different reasons, obviously. But still. So fucking tired.

I just need to remind myself that success isn’t linear and that I’ve come so far since almost dying in April...

I’m trying to be less angry and less stressed, but please excuse me if I regress sometimes. It’s a hard battle for me.

Hi, Im interested in creating a sci-fi Rromani character (shes an orphan freedom fighter who had to grow up in poverty due to neglect from the government) and Ive been researching the culture but I've come across Rromani on here who do not want gadje writing Rromani characters at all and others who give advice on writing fleshed out Rromani characters. I was curious about your stance on the subject? I want opinions from many Rromani but you dont have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable

I’m going to publish this publicly because I do get asked this a lot, if that’s ok. This is just MY opinion, obviously! I am slightly uncomfortable with gadje writing Romani characters, but I feel like that’s counter-productive. As long as a Romani character is thoroughly researched and possibly even vetted by one or more Romani people (there is so much misinformation on the internet that sometimes it’s safer to ask the actual ethnicity just to make sure), I think it’s ok. Make sure that when you do your research, it’s from a reputable source. I think I reblogged a list of books about Roma, some fictional and some not, on my other blog, romani-in-art.tumblr, here is the link: https://romani-in-art.tumblr.com/post/663234552660131840/books-about-roma

Another good place to look is the RomArchive (https://www.romarchive.eu/en/), which features writings about a vast wealth of subjects related to Romanipe. It is translated into English, German, and Romani chib/Romanes.

I know that many Romani people are not comfortable with gadjekane takes on Romanipe (Romani identity/culture; Romani-ness), and I respect that opinion. I myself was once vehemently against any non-Roma writing about us in any aspect, but again, I now feel differently.

I hope this helps! Also, you can check out Writing With Color (https://writingwithcolor.tumblr.com/), a blog that aims to help writers with culturally/racially accurate portrayals. I’m a guest mod there, and have answered a few questions about writing Romani characters.

Romani people do get a bad rep in Europe over here. I think the problem lies with the fact that they only get mentioned in the media over here as thieves, burglars and squatters. Especially in the country I live it, that’s the only thing they are known for and that’s quite sad tbh.

Yeah, those stereotypes are unfortunately very pervasive. Obviously there are a few “bad apples” but that’s true of every race and it shouldn’t be an excuse to treat Roma like they do…

Poem: Diddikai

Babo, you’ve doomed me

To wander alone

No Rrom will let me inside

Mama, you’ve ruined me

I will never find love

No Rrom will want me as a bride

Gryátsa! Gryátsa!

That’s what they all call

Whenever they see me advance

Dévla, please help me

I want to fit in

But no one will give me a chance

I wrote this in 2012 and it still makes me cry tbh. (Although, I did end up finding love, just outside my community.)

My native language Gujarati, the word sparrow is chakli which reminded me of your url (since it’s bird in Romani).

I'm actually married to a Guju and one of his cousins calls me that! It's such a pretty word!

I saw a comparison of the Romani language with other Indo-Aryan languages like Rajasthani and Punjabi and the similarities are amazing.

It is pretty cool how much of the language has been preserved since we left the region!

Yeah recently a director of a famous Russian ballet company defended blackface in the ballet The Pharaoh's Daughter which had dancers in blackface portray enslaved Nubian people (an actual ethnic group) and the anti black portrayal of the Nubian king character.

Jfc that’s awful
