I kept seeing people saying what a fun idea this would be, and so I thought... eh, it's jumping on a bandwagon, but why not.

Regular emails from your friend Dr John Watson about the adventures of his eccentric detective roommate.

Inspired by Mark Kirkland’s excellent Dracula Daily, Letters from Watson will let you read through the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes short stories over the course of one year via bitesize emails.

Keeping with the precedent set by Daily Dracula of reading classic literature in an unusual order, it will be following the chronological order of Holmes’ cases, rather than their publication order. This means we’ll start with stories about a young pre-consulting detective Holmes in the 1870s, and end with an elderly ‘retired’ Holmes getting up to shenanigans in WW1.

Emails will begin January 1st 2023. I’ve chosen this date to avoid conflicting with other ‘daily email literature’ projects, and because it is the date when all Sherlock Holmes stories will be in the public domain in the US for the first time!

I'm aware it's a very long way ahead, but won't be be a surprise when you finally get that first email? (Also you get a special email when you sign up and I think it's pretty exciting)

find me elsewhere

hey what’s up, i gave up tumblr months ago but i guess it’s time to make it official. find me, in order of most heavily used to least:

www.twitter.com/elinorgray (public, writing, fandom) or www.twitter.com/mistyzeo (private, griping, if i don’t recognize your handle i may not accept your follow request)

www.instagram.com/schmelinor (personal) or www.instagram.com/elinorgray (writing)

www.mistyzeo.net for my books &c.

www.archiveofourown.org/users/mistyzeo for all the fic

www.dreamwidth.org/mistyzeo (tbh hardly ever there except for fic exchanges, but may i suggest dw as a superior fandom blogging platform where you can actually talk to people)

I’m saving all the posts on here and may or may not delete. Tumblr is not my platform of choice, not by a long shot, but it would be a damn shame to lose my handle. Find me elsewhere, friends, and we’ll all be happier.

A Fandom Guide to Beekeeping

First things first: I am not an expert beekeeper. I’ve taken classes, done a lot of reading, and had my own bees for a few months now, but I’ve still got a few decades before I’m any kind of real authority. That said, bees are rad as hell, and I figured a basic overview of beekeeping might be helpful for fan writers and artists. So, let’s begin!

Introduction: the two most important rules

  1. All beekeeping is local. Just as my vegetable garden, in the mid-Atlantic United States, operates according to a different rhythm than a garden in the Pacific Northwest or coastal Texas or northern England, so too will a colony of bees. The most valuable resources will always be experienced beekeepers in your area. They probably have a club; as much as it might pain Sherlock, he should endeavor not to immediately offend them.
  2. Gather any five beekeepers and you’ll get six different opinions. This is partly a function of the above (all beekeeping is local), partly a function of human nature, and partly a function of bee nature. A colony of bees is alive, individual, and changeful; your beekeeping should evolve along with them. Adapt to their needs; they’re not terribly interested in adapting to yours.

ACD commission for this month based on @mistyzeo‘s Bloody Cornwall.

When I awoke, the first thing I was aware of was a heavy weight across my middle that kept me pinned quite securely to the bed. The next was the soft rush of warm breath against the back of my neck, and then the heat of the solid, familiar body behind mine. How he had become so familiar was beyond me; as far as I was aware we had never been in such close contact.

This is splendid and I'm obsessed.

One day in early spring [Holmes] had so far relaxed as to go for a walk with me in the Park, where the first faint shoots of green were breaking out upon the elms, and the sticky spear-heads of the chestnuts were just beginning to burst into their five-fold leaves. For two hours we rambled about together, in silence for the most part, as befits two men who know each other intimately.

Anonymous asked:

hi, i hope this isn't a bother. when i was a kid i used to read a lot of holmes and watch the old soviet tvseries (which is great btw! if memory serves) i was wondering what adaptations you would recommend? as someone who values your taste in media and general sensitivity

if you haven’t seen the granada holmes series that ran from 1984 to 1994, that’s an absolute requirement from me. jeremy brett not only embodies the true spirit of sherlock holmes, but he fought tooth and nail to ensure that each of the 49 episodes stuck as close to the stories they were based on as possible. it’s a faithful, rewarding, and thoroughly wonderful adaptation.

i was going to recommend the old soviet series if you hadn’t seen it! that one has such a good spirit and i adore it.

i’m not really fond of the basil rathbone era’s overall portrayal of watson as a sort of comedic sidekick, but rathbone’s acting is a must-see, and the 1939 hound of the baskervilles is the one to watch.

the holmes series that ran from 1954 to 1955 starring ronald howard is also a lot of fun. it can be kind of silly at times, and it’s not the most faithful, but holmes and watson both play off of each other so well and their chemistry makes it a real treat.

if you’re interested in audio adaptations, the radio dramas starring john gielgud and the ones starring clive merrison are both excellent. john gielgud was my introduction to holmes when i was super young, so i’m nothing but nostalgic for them, and i’ve only gotten into clive merrison’s recently, but they do such a good job as well; he and michael williams as watson are so enjoyable

Day Thirteen: Dwell Together Still, by @mistyzeo

Fandom: ACD Sherlock Holmes; Pairing: Holmes/Watson; Rating:Explicit; Words: 2k “Holmes and Watson celebrate the end of an important year.”

I know it’s early for New Year’s fic recs, but this is a MY rec countdown, so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And what is New Year’s Eve if not “a chaos of writhing, groaning, hedonism”? That’s definitely how NYE goes for Holmes and Watson in this steamy-yet-cozy PWP. This fic has all of the things I love about mistyzeo’s writing: period details, these two dork beings stupidly in love, and–OF COURSE–delicious Victorian smut. (Speaking of which: have you read Compound a Felony? No? Go buy Compound a Felony! It’s brilliant, it supports this brilliant author, and it might make a good gift for any nerdy/kinky folks in your life.)

Also, while I’m not going to ruin the last line of this fic (the title might clue you in), believe me when I say you need to read all the way to end.

The reveals are up for this year’s ACD Holmesfest  (the classic Sherlock Holmes fanworks exchange) on DW.  Lots of classic Holmes and Watson - case fics, romance, even a hint of the supernatural.

(And yes, one of mine is in there, too.)

A Study in Meta: Holmes and Watson meet William Gilette.

Classic case fic: a touch of ‘Silver Blaze’ with race horses & betting, plus: Holmes in disguise and Lestrade

The one in which Holmed uses a case as a sharade to introduce Watson to their potential retirement town.

‘Sussex Vampire’ goes more spooky and gay.

The best: Watson, show me your scars from the Afghan war…

“Something sweet, something extra”.

How Johnlock end in retirement - The Halloween Edition (aka the one in which Watson is bitten by a 'dog’).

The one in which Watson has more hidden talents.

“I did know a lover before you, but…” My heart hammered in my chest. John nodded once, his expression carefully schooled. “She wasn’t a man.”

Holmes and Watson are locked in a wine cellar…

What it says on the tin…

Five times Holmes and Watson slept together (and one time they actually had sex). Yes: (non-) platonic bed-sharing!

Behind the scene of 'The Master Blackmailer’.

The 'Five Orange Pips’- Fix it.

Meta meets Casefic: Violet Smith & Kitty Winter join forces, Holmes tells a tale, no kink shaming of a husband, oh, and Johnlock are so in love. A keeper!

Epistolary! Holmes and Watson write to each other in the aftermath of WW1… so tender.

Victorian Steampunk, anyone.

Case fic with an ambigious ending aka 'It’s the season’.

The ultimate unreliable witness.

What an amazing set of stories from such talented, accomplished writers. I am awed by your brilliance @garonne @smallhobbit @sanspatronymic @elwinglyre @spacemutineer @a-different-equation @violsva @gardnerhill @saki101 @ghislainem70 @sanguinity @scfrankles @tweedisgood @tripleransom @mistyzeo @methylviolet10b @rachelindeed @sevs_girl72 @capt_facepalm. Holmes and Watson will live for ever with such talented writers to sing them.

me: this whole concept of ~soulmates~ is so damaging, you can be happy with so many people throughout your life and sometimes the best you can do in a failed relationship is to let it go, that person isn’t THE ONE, no one is, everything in the media about romance is so fucked up on so many levels–

fic: *soulmate au*
