OH YOU ASKED FOR IT HERE I GO. Again, these are all my headcanons and ideas, none of this is canon.

The kira family is a cursed family of minor nobility, similar to nanao's.

They are cursed with misery and misfortune.

It has caused the kira family to pretty much fall apart. By the time izuru is born, the family estate is dilapidated and crumbling, and his mother and father are the only other members still alive. Only them and some loyal servants are around.

Another part of the family curse is an odd one: ghosts. Deceased members of the kira family wander the estate and the small grounds around it. They don't pay any mind to anyone, and are harmless, usually just following old routines. They are reishi apparitions that are stuck to the kira estate. Unending misery that not even death can free them from.

For generations the Kira's have been trying to find ways to free themselves from the curse, to lift themselves up as proper nobles again.

One of those many attempts was the arranged marriage between shizuka and kagekiyo. Kagekiyo being from a tiny family group in rukongai that is very specialized in rituals, curses, and ceremonies. They hoped that familiarity with curses, and many rituals kagekiyo would perform daily would at least lessen the curse on their future child. This ofc didn't work.

There is another thing, that not so much a curse has anything to do with as much as living in an edo period, and it's that mental illness runs in the family. Izuru's mother especially struggled with this. Suffering from severe paranoia and anxiety, causing her to be so protective of her son that he barely ever left her side. She was a very sweet and kind person but her mental health declined rapidly as the years went on.

Izuru's father dies of an illness when he's only six. A year later shizuka sends away all remaining staff. It's only her, little izuru, and the ghosts.

Kagekiyo's ghost wanders the family shrine. He doesn't acknowledge anyone or anything. He repeats rituals, and chants incoherent prayers. Izuru can't ever see his face, it's not there. He recognizes his father's footsteps, the timbre of his voice, his shinto priest clothing, but his face is just....a shadow.

Shizuka's mental health gets worse and worse, the isolation, worrying about her son being cursed, barely eating and sleeping. She eventually hangs herself in the estate courtyard when izuru is 14. Izuru finds her body.

He lives alone in the Kira estate for more years until he decides to become a shinigami. Maybe this will help restore some of the kira family name.

But hey, izuru works fast but the kira family curse works faster.

He only returns to his family home much, much later. His mother is there. She's standing under the tree where she hanged herself. She's looking right at him.
