Rick smiled a bit at either statement , getting closer and closer to the complex , feeling something stir in his stomach . If he was being honest , he didn’t think he’d ever actually meet her ; the radio voice , the one that had kept him going after his family was lost . Rick thought she’d simply be a beacon that , no matter how fast he’d paddle , he’d never get closer to . But he had been very wrong .

He was grungy , scruffy - his beard was overgrown . He hoped she wouldn’t mind too much . Rick looked scary and ragged , but he was simply a man . And a broken one , at that . He wasn’t going to hurt her , even if she tried anything . Which , he hoped , she wouldn’t .

You sure this is what you want ? Not too late t’turn back .

She laughed and twirled her bat before resting it on her shoulder and descending the stairs to head down to the lobby. The blonde didn’t look too clean herself. Aside from a semi-clean face, her hands were dirty with dried blood and mud caked under her nails. Despite how hard she tried to keep her hands clean, it never lasted. Suddenly, she began to feel self conscious about how she looked. Her hair was dirty, her shirt was stained, and her jeans were ripped. Even her boots were worn down.

“Don’t worry about it, Mr. Grimes. No running water effects us all.”

She kicked a rock on her way down. It was a short walk to the lobby, so she tucked herself behind the front desk. The bat was set down on the desk and she tried to comb some of the tangles from her hair with her free hand.

“I want this. More than anythin’.”

He’s not a young man anymore, at least – not young enough to dance around a dumb affection he has for her.

He’s in his mid-twenties, for Chrissake. Ashley reaches for the water bottle, taking a quick sip.

“You want help on uh, those traps? First – I mean -”

She smiles softly and blushes as she removes a single cracker from the pack before offering that too. He was adorable, there was no denying that. A little older, but age never bothered her. Her own father was quite a bit older than her mother.

“Of course. I mean, it’s kinda boring, but you’re more than welcome to tag along and hang out.”

Her heart picks up a bit at the thought. The menial tasks she has listed for the day were things she can do alone, but she won’t deny the warmth that flows through her chest as she throws out a small tease.

“Just don’t step in the traps.”
