“Moderation is a good thing. Too much Jack all at once could be a bit much.” the captain jokes lightly. He hopes this is going well. It’s all so much still, a hallow pain still deep in his gut of the past that makes everything so hard. It’s a hope beyond hope that something—anything—will bloom into a friendship of sorts. He wants to mend it any way he can because he doesn’t want to lose Ricky again. It would destroy Jack.
Jack and Coke. The quick flash of something familiar brings him back decades—Ricky sitting at the bar with such a drink smiling and laughing with the glass in hand. His heart clenches a moment as he blinks his eyes to refocus on returning to the present. The man before him is so different from all those years ago. Time hasn’t been easy on either of them.
“I could go for a Jack and Coke, for old time’s sake.”

“Heh... Maybe, who knows.” He replied with a little shrug of his shoulder, something light-hearted and easy going to show he appreciated the joke. Ricky is truly glad they’re mending some stuff now, hoping they’ll keep in touch now that they’d gotten past the rocky reintroduction between one another.

Ricky watches expectantly as Jack ponders over the response, smiling a bit and nodding his head. “Sure, we’ll do that then. Bit of nostalgia never hurt nobody, right?” He murmured, pursing his lips. “There’s a few good spots to settle in... I’d prefer a seat in the back where we can speak privately.”

Understandable. It had been awkward—still awkward if the captain was honest with himself. Though now the uncomfortable emotions between the pair had begun dwindling it felt okay. Not comfortable like when they first met but they could at least outwardly joke with and tease one another. “No going overboard—got it.” Jack states respectfully. There were still bound to be eggshells to walk on though this was the start to something good.
“I’m not too picky.” he replied. He doesn’t know exactly what to have. It had been several years since he touched alcohol…about as long as he had been gone. There never was a preference in the past—anything that could get him drunk to forget was his poison to pick from. “What would you like?”

“Mhm, everything in moderation. I believe that’s what people say at least.” He murmured, hoping that whatever was between them could at least resolve to friendship of sorts. Nobody else would ever understand Ricky like Jack would, because who else was still around and living like they were? Other vampires sure, but that group was something Ricky didn’t meld too neatly with. He didn’t choose this life, after all.

“Me? Uhm...” He trailed off in thought, pursing his lips a bit. “Jack and coke was always a favorite... Or perhaps an old fashioned. I’ve never shaken the classics, I’m afraid... Kind of hard to, you know?” He murmured, hoping Jack didn’t mind something like that. “Unless the type of drinks you’re talking about was like... Coffee or something.” Which he’d have to politely decline. Those were a bit too heavy for his tastes and he’d likely get sick off it.

The smile is bashful while he rubs the back of his neck and laughs. Playful banter? He must be out of practice if it’s so easy to cause his face to warm up so quickly. Or maybe seeing Ricky after so many years with all these emotions coming to the surface was the culprit. He feels so stuck in his head right now, reminiscing about the past when he should be in the present talking to his old friend. “If you’re wishing for a tease then I can sure be just that.” the captain hums. Chocolate brown eyes glint with playful intention while he leans forward with elbows on the table and chin resting on top of his clasped hands. “Though would there be a possibility that we could have a drink? For old time’s sake?”

“A little is fine... Don’t think I can manage the tension from before.” He admitted, seeing as his reasons for being upset had began to dwindle away now that they were just... Talking. Ricky knew what it was like to have to lie and keep secrets now that he’d changed, so the initial rush of emotions and feelings he had were being set aside into a neat little box. Ricky quirks a brow as Jack leans in and requests a drink, relieved the male wasn’t asking for some sort of lunch. A drink he could do; he could stomach liquids just fine. “Hm... Sure, I can spare some time for a drink. What kind are we having?”

A soft blush tints his cheeks as eyes cast down to the table. He feels silly to be embarrassed in such a way. This was Ricky—there was no reason for him to feel so bashful. “Well I try not to be too cheeky when meeting back up with an old flame.” It’s easy to fall back into their groove. This comfortable, almost natural banter that had enough hint of flirting that you wouldn’t pick up unless you were the pair. He missed it. “Don’t want to seem to playful.”

It’s actually quite refreshing to be the one that got Jack flustered for once, because heaven knows it’s normally the other way around in these situations. It’s what had him swept off his feet to begin with; Jack knew just the words to say to him when he was working hard as a simple bellhop way back in the days of black and white cinema. “That so?” He asked in amusement, chuckling and nodding his head. “You’re a playful guy, Jack... Don’t try and hide it after all this time. I know things are different but... Your playful banter was always great.”

The captain smirks at the compliment. It wasn’t expected though he did like to hear his old flame saying something sweet about him. “I don’t know, I think you look good the way you are.” he counters. To say this wasn’t one of the weirdest interactions he’s had in some time was an understatement. A lot of bizarre things happen in Jack’s life and being cheeky with an ex was not new on the list. Not even an immortal lover—they’ve been far and few between—but meeting up with Ricky, a human-turned-immortal ex lover was number one of the weird checklist of the day. “Sorry——if that was too forward.”

Ricky merely smiles a little at that, a little flattered but only because he thought of himself as a tired and more stoic looking guy these days. It wasn’t often he talked with people and had banter quite like this, after all. He processes how it makes him feel, a bit warm inside and maybe even a little better about himself. “What? No, no, that wasn’t too forward. I... I’m glad that my appearance still has something good behind it.” He chuckled, tilting his head a bit. “Look at you, apologizing for giving a compliment. Not the Jack I remember from way back when.”

All that running manages to bring you back here. Ricky had no idea how right he was. There was little familiarity left in the world for someone who has walked it for hundreds of years. When all you have is time one tends to travel everywhere that was easily manageable with no worry for time wasted. He clung to the few places that held precious memories and this town had an almost supernatural pull on him. Was it the guilt of leaving one of the last people who had been able to break down the walls around his heart? Or the curious heart wondering what the life of an old flame would have been? “Too mad really.” Jack sighs as his shoulders slump. He squeezes the bridge of his nose to ignore the snarky thoughts cropping up in his head. Self deprecation wouldn’t help the situation. “Leads you down some rabbit holes you don’t want to visit. It’s a very sad, difficult existence—one that I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemies.” There’s nothing that can change the past. He doesn’t presume a rekindling—it’s not realistic. In a selfish standpoint the captain does wonder if maybe he could be friends again in the future. Brown eyes trail back up to Ricky as his hand falls to his side. “You look good Ricky.”

The brunette merely nods as the other slumps a bit, watching as Jack pinches his nose and goes on about rabbit holes and places that make their existence all the more miserable and melancholy. How stagnant their lives were, being ageless in a world that ticked on every second towards some new idea that changed constantly. Always the same, just stuck like a pin on a board that kept rotating around you.

“You got that right... Nobody deserves this life. No one.” He agreed, unsure where this left them now that his secret was out and they knew the other still existed. There’s a part deep down that’s hopeful they could at least be friends, maybe someone to confide in about this wild life of living on forever. Was that a silly thought? Perhaps it was a thought from a person that had lived many a year ago. Ricky blinks out of his daze when Jack speaks, shaking his head a bit in surprise before a breathy chuckle leaves him. Now it’s his turn to push down the bad jokes and spare poor Jack. “Thank you, you look pretty good too, Jack. You got a nice tan going. Need me one of those.” He manages to say lightheartedly, leaned back in his seat contently.

Purpose? Many, many years ago there was one. He was meant to save the world and keep it protected from the aliens that meant to do harm to humanity. There were so many different things that he was meant to do and they all went wrong. One thing or another came up—it was utterly inevitable in his life for something to get screwed up. Be it the fault of Jack or karma deciding to rear their head he just went through the motions.
“I didn’t, not for a very long time.” the smile that spread across his lips is filled with sadness. He remembered when his life was just being the loyal soldier taking control of the safety of Earth. The centuries being on the front lines to fight his way through the enemy, die, then get right back up to do it all again. “I was lost. Then when I met you I wasn’t anymore. When I felt settled, finally secure and safe, I was afraid. There weren’t any stakes—I didn’t have to fight or survive and I got scared. I ran away like a coward and I didn’t stop running.”

He’s hoping Jack has some sort of reassuring words of advice about all this, or perhaps it’s just day after day with nothing of worth in the long run. He’s already lived so many years in seclusion and hates the thought of it staying that way. Still, does someone like him deserve anybody at his side? Relationships aren’t the easiest and they both know that from experience. He watches Jack’s expression and his own softens, staying silent as he takes the other in.

‘... All that running managed to bring you back here somehow. Full circle and all that.” He responded, idly tapping his fingers together in some means of self-soothing. “It’s a shame really... Wonder what would’ve happened if things panned out different, but I know better than to ponder that what if’s of the past. It’ll drive you mad, I can tell you that much.” He sighed, smoothing a hand over the back of his neck.

Jack was grateful to know that. It was a cruel fact of his life—he had tried everything you could think of to test the limits of his immortality. That was the one thing that he hoped no one would ever have to become familiar with. “I don’t think you should. It’s…just don’t test.” would he expect Ricky to actively listen to that advise? Not especially though he hoped that the severity in his tone was enough to ward the other away from trying out how immortal he was. “Maybe. Life is funny that way—you think you have a specific purpose but really you haven’t found it yet. Almost like a wild goose chase.“

Ricky raises a brow at the advice, figuring he’d take Jack’s word on it and not push the envelope of his supposed immortality. He’d been hurt in many ways already... As badly as he wished he was still human, he was afraid of what came after death. Was there anything there for someone like him? “Okay, I won’t test it.” He replied, seeing as he’d already worried his head about it when he was younger and much more easily broken.

“I dunno... These days I’m sure there’s no goose at all.” He admits, studying Jack a long moment. “... You have a purpose at all, Jack? Or something you at least feel drawn to do after all these years?”

deep in the Jello Sea with Steve

Steve isn't exactly known for his subtlety but jealousy makes him level up in petty and subtext, so it's like he's having two conversations at once, one for the witnesses and one as continuation of their earlier argument

On the surface it seems like Steve is being a good wingman, but by saying this he implies, to Danny, that Danny and Gabby don't have anything in common, Danny doesn't really care about things she dedicated her entire life to, it's especially stark in an episode that repeatedly rams home his dismissal of the local culture.

Steve also meant what he'd said moments earlier, Danny shouldn't pretend to be someone he's not to find love

Isn't this a violation of the bro-code? A good buddy would have made himself scarce, but Steve isn't a buddy, he's the other interested party, and he's not backing out of the competition yet. Unlike Danny and Gabby, Steve and Danny have many many things in common, they have the same goals and care about the same things, so he could still have a fighting chance. It's his Taylor Swift moment. 'Why can't you see?? You belong with me!'

Ostensibly he's talking to Gabby but he's taunting Danny, and his tone of voice is exaggeratedly chipper, pretending to be happy for them and failing, body language and gestures big give-away. He is also letting Gabby know that Danny talks to him, while she had him for one evening, Steve has him for the rest of the week, he's being a jealous and catty teenage girl about this

(reader he wasn't kidding)

Unfortunately, Danny doesn't hear Steve's heart's song, he thinks his friend is being a dick just to screw with him and not in the way they both secretly wish.
