I think compositionally there’s a nice balance in this shot. But I feel like it could’ve been used more. I feel like it’s almost there but not enough and it would look pleasing to the eye more symmetrical. I like the overhead lighting on them but not too dark to drown out their eyes in shadows. Color wise I think their skin tones definitely add to the green and contrast well with the black tub.

I think the lighting is a key factor here because it adds to the tone/mood. We have these hands reaching for cigarettes which are pretty dirty. Plus the background of the floor looks like a gross bathroom floor. With the help of lighting we get that soft green glow that adds a dinginess to the frame. I think this frame is also well done compositionally because of the fingers leading us to the cigarettes in the middle, also without the foot in the background the depth of the picture would be lot different.

I chose this photo because of the lines. I’m big on lines directing eyes to where you want the audience to look. I feel like that’s a big way of subjectively leading your audience through the story. I also like the balance of colors, with the white walls and the layer of dark black and red with brown and the people wearing black in the next room to the white wall on the right. It becomes nice and layered.
bad times at the el royale -
I always thought this time of day would be cool to shoot an entire film at. However, I understand how hard that would be. I really like the lighting of the telephone booth because it adds depth to the shot. Especially with the red highlight on the car in the foreground. Also I love reflections, so the fact the car window provides that in a place (the woods) where you wouldn’t see a mirror. If I were to change one thing it would be less space to the left, but at the same time I like it because it makes the guy in the booth more isolated.
