His breathing is steady. If it all ends, he thinks, this is how it’s supposed to happen. With his eyes looking into hers, testifying: my life is in your hands.

“So…” she begins. “Here I am.”
It’s almost comical, how slowly he raises his head, how his eyes widen in bafflement, how quickly he manages to replace the shock with something much more meaningful, with relief and genuine delight and just a spark of self-content because he knew she’d come up with a good enough reason to join him, because he knew she misses their sense of adventure. It’s been much too long, after all.
“Here you are.”

"I want you to know that if you want to talk, ever, about anything, I'd be happy to listen." He smiles at her, quickly, sweetly. "Goodnight."
"How about now?" It's a bit too urgent, a bit too much of everything and she bites her tongue as the words leave her mouth.

She stops then, reaches for his arm to turn him around to face her.
There's silence, and a soft smile, and something unspoken in the space between them, something like you already know the answer, something like I'm tired of waiting and aren't you, something heavy.
"Let's keep walking, Lizzie. We're almost there," he says and takes a few steps before she follows him.

“You’re going to make me spell it out for you?”
“Oh absolutely, angel. Absolutely.”
“There’s really not much more to it. I called you nice and you…pushed me against the wall. Our noses touched briefly, but that’s besides the point really, that’s—“
“And you think about that often? Me pushing you against a wall and our noses touching?”

"Why did you leave earlier, Lizzie?"
He doesn’t waste a second.
“It’s complicated.”
"Try me."

“The little girl’s face lights up every time he looks at her. Every time her small hand encircles one of his fingers, all the burdens are lifted from his shoulders and he glows. She’ll never tire of the sight. It’s the most beautiful thing she’s ever seen.”

"I couldn't face you when you woke up. I wasn't sure what I wanted to say to you."
"How about now? What would you like to say to me now?"
He closes his eyes. Holds his breath.
"I'm still trying to figure that out, Red."

“I wanted to see you.”
“And why is that?”
“I missed your company, Lizzie. No ulterior motives.”
The coffee arrives just in time, sparing her an honest response. She’s not brave enough to tell him yet, how impatiently she waited for his calls, his messages, how she had hoped every day that he would be waiting for her at the Post Office or even in the lobby of her building. A total of two weeks apart, that’s all it was. They’ve had much worse. And yet…
