I Should Probably Take My Contacts Out

6,000 Undergrads

Despite its categorization as a medium sized college; there are times where I feel the immensity of my campus. The snow-blanketed pavement seems to build an endless distance between me and the other students. It's weird to feel so disconnected at times, but I do realize that I can use seven inches of snow as an excuse to be a bit removed.

I hope I do this correctly! I wanted to share an essay I wrote on the poem, "In the Beginning." I hope that it works!

The Benefits of Cake and Reasoning

There once was, and very well may still be, a wise rabbi residing in the suburban oasis of Central New Jersey who claimed to have found the meaning of life. His theory stemmed not from the school of Abrahamic thought or teachings of Moses, but rather from the rich delightfulness of Entenmanns’ $5.99 Chocolate Fudge Cake. This rabbi, well over six feet tall and two hundred pounds heavy, barreled into services each day full of energy and life, for as he claimed, “As long as I know that there is a box of Entenmanns waiting for me each morning, I have a reason to roll out of bed and into my robes.” Poet Patrick Phillips’ lyric poem, “In the Beginning,” enthralls readers with the certainty of mortality yet introduces a wonderfully hedonistic concept—life may be fleeting but humans hold the unique ability to find purpose.

L’Chaim There goes that toast again, four chipped glasses full of some kind of ruby held up to the sun this time, death crumbs falling and rising here’s to Mardi Gras, here’s to the apple tree pinned against my fence, here’s to reproach, here’s to doing it to music, here’s to fog, and here’s to fog again, and life dividing inside fog; oh when it dissipates let’s make a circle; here’s to the baby hiding inside his clothes, here’s to his being alive without me, here’s to the mountain again, for what the hell, I might as well be on the mountain, here’s to delectables, free health care, love, popcorn.

Gerald Stern's book of poems, Everything is Burning. A really amazing collection of post-holocaust poetry.

David & Davida

This was a short writing exercise I did in Poetry last year! lol

David & Davida

She is entwined to a stage in Metuchen;

A morose riddle of a town.

The people are bubbly and water their hydrangeas,

But the town transforms at night.

David takes to his class and entertains his students.

“Class,” the class is curious, calm, and collected.

“Class,” David brings the class to serendipity.

He is their teacher and they are there to learn.

The sun sets at the House of Divine.

The virginity of the town is covered in sinful luster,

The hydrangeas transform into birds of paradise,

And the town takes upon the filthy veranda.

Davida takes to the stage and looks upon her subjects.

“Filth!” The town is intoxicated, inebriated, and transformed.

“Filth!” Davida flirts with the slightest hint of eloquence.

She is their queen and they are in utter jubilation.

  Davida transforms in the morning.

He arduously tends to his classroom and paperwork.

A morose riddle of a man,

He is entwined to the town of Metuchen.

Welcome! I've decided to make this little slice of the Internet a place for some queer thought. I have a few followers on my primary Tumblr (fivefootfiveglamazon) who I would like to spare from NSFW material! I plan to post a few times a week and update anyone who would like to listen about the things going on in my life and what I observe while at school.

So here's the fun part--introductions. My name is Davida and I'm a queer-Mexican-Jew attending TCNJ. I really wanted to make this page to share my observations about the people and spaces around me and to hopefully practice some introspection.

Please feel free to message me. I want to use this space to hopefully learn new things and meet people who will share their stories. <3
