Scrapped bit of a crossover arc

When writing scripts, I have to be willing to discard elements that I’ve invested in but don’t turn out well enough to meet project standards. Below is such an example from a future crossover with Horse Wife. I felt that while it was neat to show off some characters that don’t get many crossovers, in the end it was too many panels for not enough payoff, and couldn’t be meaningfully condensed.

Paypal service change and temporary fix

To all artists on the project

Paypal has changed their terms of service, and significantly increased their fees for cross-country transactions. This flat fee can easily reach 10% of the total for the $4 payments.

One option to reduce this percentage is to put a hold on your payments, and wait until you have a significant number of panels to request your funds. Larger payments will cost less as a total percentage of the payment.

Please tell the project manager, robert.patrician@yahoo.com , if you wish to have your payments put on hold to receive a large payment later.

Increase in panel stipend, $4!

Great news for artists of The Pun Pony Project. As of March first, I am increasing the per panel rate to $4. We started at $1 a panel six years ago, and I hope to keep going for many more years.

At our current production rate, Ask Pun has about half a year of life before we run out of comics and start work on the final story arc and conclusion. While all good things must eventually end, I'm hoping to stave that off for at least another year and a half.

December 2017 Update

Greetings, members of The Pun Pony Project! This is your update for December 2017!

To begin, the staff pruning for 2017 has completed. There are currently 40 artists currently involved in Ask Pun. I intend to begin a recruitment drive in January to enable more people to enjoy participating in the comic. To that end, I'd like to put together a new 'testimonials' video like this one, for recruitment purposes. The format would be a 15-30 second voice clip from an artist saying why they are a member of the project played over some of their comics. I'd like to get at least six of these testimonials. Please let me know if you're interested in this, it should only take about five minutes of your time. Second, the pay per panel has been increased to $3. I'm now in a better financial situation and have adjusted the project funding accordingly. Third, some statistics. We're holding steady at 19500 followers, both gaining and losing an average of 100 followers a month. The queue of comics currently extends to October of 2018.

Tumblr: *rolls out “best stuff first”*

My blog:

on the one hand this is a joke post because lol i have never made a good post in my life, but also, if i hadn’t made the connection between this update and my sudden nosedive in activity, i would have been really fucking discouraged about all the shit i’ve been working on lately. i guarantee there are people on tumblr right now who haven’t made that connection, and who are trying to figure out why suddenly no one likes anything they’ve made. and that fucking sucks.

Reminder to go into your settings and turn off ‘Best Stuff First’ because my activity’s tanked a couple days ago for no reason so this stuff IS happening.

You WILL miss content with that setting on.

i ain’t joking when i say that my activity looks JUST like this too and i wasn’t sure why

I can only find the option on the app under Settings > Dashboard Preferences.

To support content creators do us a favour and turn off “Best stuff first”. Open the tumblr app (Android or iOs) and go to “Settings > Dashboard Preferences. And please reblog this post, so that everybody will see this. Thank you very much!

I assumed I just wasn’t writing very well, but maybe it’s not just me.

Am I supposed to pay to get my writing in front of followers now?

We interrupt your regularly-scheduled sci-fi content because this is important for app users, and it sucks. We all follow blogs because we want to see their content, not to have a crappy algorithm decide what’s best.

This blog is down approximately 80%, which doesn’t affect me other than as an annoyance (as this is a hobby and @okayto is small-ish) but the issue undoubtedly hurts others.

Below are instructions for turning it off. You have to do it individually–it doesn’t matter if a blog you follow turns it off, you’ll still be affected unless you do the same.

We don’t normally reblog PSAs, but this is very clearly affecting us, too! If you haven’t been getting your daily dose of RPG humor, this setting is probably why. Turn it off so you can see all the silly shit players say!

Trying to reblog the versions of these instructions with the most notes, so they’ll actually show up for the people afflicted by this update.

((OOC: Hey guys, mod here! I reblogged this on my mod blog, but it’s gotten to the point that Movie Slate’s blog has experienced a drop in activity as well.

If you’re using mobile and you’ve stopped seeing Movie Slate’s posts this is the reason why. You can switch off this feature if you want to see the updates when they are posted, or you can activate the blog alerts so whenever there’s a new post you will get notified.

Thank you for your time, and apologies for the sudden PSA.))

Ask Pun has not seen a significant decrease in activity due to the new system. A pattern I am noticing among those claiming a dramatic decrease in activity is that they post rarely and sporadically. Reblogs don’t count as content. In contrast, Ask Pun posts comics three times a week. Much like Youtube’s algorithm, regular activity is rewarded.

I believe another factor is conversion rate: If you have 10,000 followers and your post gets 100 notes (1% conversion), that will rate below a post with 1,000 followers and 11 notes (1.1% conversion). This is how Facebook decides what posts to show.

So the message would be: If you like a post, be sure to hit that like button, because now it will affect how many other people will see the post.

A rejected Supremus Longhorn script

Here’s a script that recently came up for review after a period if inactivity, and I decided to flag it out. While I find it greatly amusing, it doesn’t match the direction we’re going with for Supremus Longhorn.

"Panel 1 Supremus Longhorn in an armory with various evil-looking weapons Blacksmith: “Sir, I’ve prepared some options for prosthetic limbs.” Supremus(arrogant): “Very well, show me what you have.” Panel 2 Supremus with two peg-legs: “Definitely not!” Panel 3 Supremus with wheels replacing his missing limbs: “Ridiculous! No.” Panel 4 Supremus with a steampunk contraption with two metallic artificial limbs, a boiler strapped to his butt. Supremus: “Functional but too heavy.” Panel 5 Supremus with a chained Earth Pony foal strapped below each of his stumps. Supremus(looking in a mirror): “Now this I like.” Earth Pony Foal: “I want my mommy!” Panel 6 Supremus(slapping the foal): “Quiet! You’re a leg now!” "

Anonymous asked:

Is there a question or mini arc related to the canon 'verse and how pun 'verse ended literaly in the oposed direction in really many places (like example: changelings season 6 finale vs pun many kinds of changelings) or there no plan to mention it (or just no artist or writter interested in address that)?

Two big things keep us from trying to “follow the show’ in Ask Pun, and are why we officially diverge from the show mid season 2.

1. The buffer. Our current buffer of comics extend out to 2018. So if the show changes something huge tomorrow, we’ll still be publishing “out of date” comics for a year and a half. Since we’re not going to scrap comics we’ve already made, even a whole-hearted effort to keep up with the show would be a season and a half behind.2. The “pile of scripts” system. The scripts exist not as an ordered and assigned list but rather as a big pile. Artists shift through the pile and grab the ones they like, and then produce them whenever they feel like it. Thus a script from two years ago might get submitted tomorrow. If we wanted to keep up with the show we’d have to go through all the available scripts (about 300 right now) after every episode and pull out the ones that aren’t valid anymore, then go through the claimed scripts and see how far along each of the now invalid scripts are in production.

In the end, attempting to ‘keep up with the show’ would have negligible benefit to the comic and a tremendous cost. Ask Pun aims to tell its own story, and chaining ourselves to someone else’s story isn’t in the best interest of the comic.

What could have been: The Play

Before settling on further development of Ask Pun, I floated several other concepts for a long-term comic. One of these was “the stage.” This was to be a set of ponies “making a Tumblr comic” by setting up items for the camera and posing, so for example the speech bubbles would be physical objects suspended from wires. Thus the comic would flip back and forth between the story they were telling (A Daring Do type adventure) and the lives of those involved in producing the comic. In the end I decided not to go with this idea because my writing skills at the time were not sufficient to do the concept justice. Four years of practice later I’m confident I could write it, but I’m too deep into Ask Pun to start another comic,

Some folks have been asking why their questions took literally years to be answered, and this is why. Don’t let it discourage you though, we do our best to use your submissions to augment Pun’s adventures!

The buffer is also why we don’t follow the canon of the show: when significant changes are introduced we will have comics in production and in the buffer that conflict with the new material. Thus Ask Pun officially diverges from the show in the middle of season 2..

Also our writer doesn’t actually watch the show, but he likes to use the buffer as an excuse avoid watching six seasons of of love and tolerance, because he’s a grumpy old man.
