hey man it’s good to have a Bullshit Meter but when young or new artists are trying out edginess … just let them be, man. let them write fake-deep. let them draw OC’s that are half-demons tortured with their love of a person. let them sing songs about cigarettes and cold hands. let them be. it’s okay. you don’t need to police them, they’re just having fun exploring what it means to be an artist. it’s better to let them practice and get better than to stop them in their tracks because you want to be cool and funny. i don’t know. a lot of times young kids are working out real problems, and even if they weren’t? they’re just learning, man. let it be.

i don’t think anyone fully understands how iconic of a film the princess diaries truly is. everything in that film is iconic. the apartment/firehouse. the scooters as a method of transportation. “get off the grass” in 4 languages. “please don’t crush my soy nuts.” the mustang. the weird neighbor who writes poetry. the m&ms on the keyboard and the pizza. “it’s a wango?” lily’s otter backpack. the whole paolo makeover sequence. every foot pop. stop me i could go on forever the princess diaries is so iconic it’s on the same level of iconography as star wars (1977)

contrast this with marco, who is clearly the most reluctant to get involved in the war (because of his dad). however by the end, jake is the one who suffers the most personal loss (tom, rachel, his parents getting kidnapped, not getting together with cassie) while marco ends up with the most personal gain (rescuing his mom). i just feel really bad that jake is really the only one who gets into the war for personal reasons and in the end is the one who loses the most.

Yes I totally agree, but one important aspect of what Applegate does with the characters is that Jake has the most to lose.  One of the few really good moments of characterization in the TV show is when Marco says to Jake, during the debate about whether to start fighting, “This is for real—you don’t even know what reality is. Nothing bad’s ever happened to you. You have this perfect family, like I used to have… Go on, say it, you can say it: my mom’s dead. And that’s reality.”  (Of course, they find out later that same day that that “perfect family” already includes one controller and two parents who didn’t even notice their own kid getting replaced, but that irony is yet to come.)

I think that moment nicely sums up where Jake is at as of the night they all wander through the construction site.  Literally the biggest problem he has in his life at that moment in time is he got cut from the basketball team and he doesn’t want to admit to Tom that it happened.  That’s all.  By contrast, Rachel has been filling in as the second parent to her sisters since her parents’ divorce, Marco has been acting as the only parent in his family since Eva’s death when he was eleven years old, and Tobias is being emotionally if not physically abused by his caretakers.  Cassie might also have a pretty good family situation, but she also knows what it’s like to euthanize a helpless animals she’s spent weeks or months trying to save, which has forced her to grow up fast in different ways.  Ax’s sheltered upbringing comes to a horrific end just about the time the series begins, but by the time the other Animorphs reach him he has lost just about everyone he cares about and is cut off from his remaining family.

Jake loses everything over the course of the war, yes.  He loses his parents, his home, his sense of safety, his mental health, his confidence and his certainty.  He loses the ability to trust his own family, years before he literally loses his brother.  He loses the sense that he is a good person, and he loses the ability to have a single truly safe place to run to at the end of the day.  He loses his trust in himself.

The thing is… Tobias never had any of that in the first place.  Ax and Marco have already lost their casual confidence in their families’ infallibility by the time they become involved in the war.  Cassie and Rachel have already shouldered far more responsibility than most girls their age.

I guess what I’m saying is that Jake is, in a word, privileged.  (And no, not only because he’s the only straight white cis able-bodied male on the team.)  He has the enormous blessing to be born with a father and mother and brother who are all loving, healthy, protective, and financially secure.  Through nothing more than the luck of the universe he has a tremendous advantage over his friends when growing up, one that imbues him with confidence and canniness when facing down the problems of the war.  He loses everything, yes, but he has everything to lose.  No one else on the team can say that’s the case when the war begins.

thank you for articulating one really good reason why Jake does have canon reasoning for being the natural leader.  people always say “well it’s cause he’s the big strong handsome all-american white dude” which isn’t untrue but when they also go on to say that he has zero characterization that makes him a capable leader… that is completely missing a lot of the subtleties of all six of them, especially Jake, and the privileged confidence he has from his safe and affirming upbringing is really really good talk.

All of this, yes yes yes.

And this is actually really smart on Applegate’s part. I don’t think it was unintentional. Because the thing is – okay, there’s not truly a main character in Animorphs. It really is a very successful ensemble cast. But Jake is slightly closer to “the main character” than the others by virtue of having the first book, of being the leader. He’s not the last one to narrate the series (Marco gets that honor) but he’s the only one to tell us his last name. He’s the common thread/connecting point for all the Animorphs (Marco’s best friend, Rachel’s cousin, Cassie’s crush, the only one who knew Tobias at all, etc.). So there’s a slight, slight sense of him being a little apart from the others in the narrative.

But that’s why he works so well in that role. In terms of narrative, you generally (there are exceptions, but generally) want your main character to be the one with either the most to gain, the most to lose, or both, all depending on what you want your story to accomplish. Because it’s most interesting for a reader to see a focal character go through significant change, so the person with the most to lose/gain will likely go through the most change. And that’s why Jake works so well, on a narrative basis, as the semi-slightly-main character: because he has the most to lose, so his complete, total, merciless downfall is that much harsher.

And no, that doesn’t diminish the pain, loss, and suffering of the other characters. Rather, it highlights just how much this war has taken away from them all, that even Jake, who had everything, is now quite possibly the worst-off of the surviving team members.

# AND I SAY JAKE IS ARGUABLY THE WORST-OFF

# I THINK WE CAN AGREE THAT MARCO AND AX AND CASSIE

# WHILE THEY DEFINITELY ARE NOT OKAY

# GO ON TO LIVE LIFE FUNCTIONALLY

# JAKE ISN’T FUNCTIONAL ANYMORE AFTER THE WAR

# AND YEAH TOBIAS IS JUST AS BAD

# BUT TOBIAS ALREADY HAD THE HARDENED PROTECTION OF HIS HAWK-SELF

# I’M NOT SAYING HE’S OKAY BUT HE HAD SORT OF ALREADY BUILT HIMSELF A SAFE PLACE VIA HAWK-SELF

# TO DISENGAGE WITH THE HUMAN WORLD WHEN HE NEEDED TO

# JAKE DIDN’T HAVE ANY KIND OF COPING MECHANISM LIKE THAT

# AT ANY POINT

# THEY’VE ALL SUFFERED ENORMOUSLY

# BUT JAKE COPES WITH IT THE LEAST WELL

# BECAUSE HE’S THE LEAST EQUIPPED TO COPE WITH IT

Do u ever not realize how starved for affection u are till someone hugs u a bit tighter than normal and you find that you really don’t want to let go

Touch starvation is actually a thing. The term for it that’s emerging in medical/psych circles is “skin hunger”. We as humans are meant to be much more social- and especially physically social - than we actually are, and Americans in particular are often touch starved because the casual, platonic contact that often happens between friends in other places just. Does not happen here.

There’s a really Puritan idea that’s pervaded our culture, that touch and sex are inherently linked, and it’s doing us a massive disservice. Touch is incredibly important for humans- hugs reduce blood pressure, cuddling releases oxytocin, and babies will straight up DIE without being touched enough because the stimulation releases hormones that are integral to their healthy development.

We were never meant to hold one another at arm’s length, and if you feel you need physical contact, don’t be afraid to ask for it! Hug your mom. Cuddle a friend on the couch. Ask. There’s a good chance that they need contact just as much as you do.
