EXCLUSIVE: A second season of smash John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager is in the works at Amazon Prime Video and the BBC with Tom Hiddleston set to reprise his role as protagonist Jonathan Pine.

Under the codename Steelworks, Deadline understands season two will film later this year in London and South America. Although it is yet to be formally greenlit by Amazon and the BBC, we hear that it is set to receive a two-season order.

David Farr, who wrote the original, is back to write season two.

Rumors of a second season have abound almost since the first ended in late 2016 and the second run of The Ink Factory’s adaptation is understood to be set in the present day. Following British arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) being taken away by the Syrians at the end of season one, Hiddleston’s Pine is informed he is dead two years later, and he has to face up to a new, even more deadly challenge.

Penned by Farr and directed by Susanne Bier, the first season also counted Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, Elizabeth Debicki and David Harewood amongst an impressive cast roster. Winning two Emmys and three Golden Globes, it followed Pine, the night manager of a luxury Cairo hotel and former British soldier, who is recruited by the manager of a Foreign Office taskforce to infiltrate Roper’s inner circle.

The first season was one of the top-rated UK dramas of that year, aired on AMC in the U.S. and spawned a number of subsequent le Carré adaptations from The Ink Factory – which is run by le Carré’s sons Simon and Stephen Cornwell – including Little Drummer Girl starring Florence Pugh.

The Hindi adaptation of The Night Manager starring Aditya Roy Kapur as Pine and Anil Kapoor as Roper launched earlier this month on Disney+ Hotstar and Simon Cornwell recently told Deadline he’s open to a second season for this version.

Fifth Season (formerly Endeavor Content) distributes The Night Manager and has a minority stake in The Ink Factory.

Tom Hiddleston has been spotted for the first time since he became a father.

The Eton and Cambridge-educated actor, 42, welcomed a baby with Fresh Meat star Zawe Ashton last October.

He and Ashton, 38, have yet to disclose the name or sex of their child.

The couple first met in 2019 when they played husband and wife in a revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal.

Tom was seen pushing a pram as he walked his dog in North London, cutting a casual figure in a blue hoody and shorts.

He also wore a blue cap, looking pensive as he listened to music on his stroll and later greeted a fan on a high street.

It comes after a source told US Weekly in October: ‘Tom and Zawe are loving being new parents and are filled with joy.’

The insider also noted they are 'having the struggles of new parents and aren’t sleeping much but are thrilled.’

DailyMail.com reached out to the couple’s representatives for comment at the time.  

In June, Tom confirmed he was set to wed the beauty but kept tight lipped about the romance, simply telling the  LA Times: 'I’m very happy’ and nothing more.

Tom and Zawe set tongues wagging about a possible engagement when they appeared at the BAFTAs last year, after which she was pictured wearing a huge diamond sparkler on her ring finger in a photo shared by host AJ Odudu.

The couple were reportedly congratulated by industry friends at the ceremony - after Zawe hid her hand as she took to the red carpet in a pink cape dress.

The Fresh Meat star concealed her stunning diamond-encrusted ring from photographers on the red carpet, draping her stunning flowing pink gown over her hand.

Tom, meanwhile, looked handsome in a black blazer and trousers, as he posed hand-in-hand with Zawe.

Later in the ballroom of London’s Grosvenor Hotel the couple caught up with TV personality AJ who snapped a picture, which showed the diamond ring.

Zawe and Tom have worked hard over the years to kept their relationship out of the spotlight.

The couple confirmed their romance during a PDA-filled holiday at the beach in Ibiza in September 2021 before making their red carpet debut together at the Tony Awards in New York City.

Also in 2021, it was revealed the pair had moved in together after months of romance rumors, and they are now said to be living together in Atlanta, Georgia.

Sources close to the duo said The Night Manager star, and the actress are 'very well suited and enjoy the quieter side of life’.

An insider told The Sun : 'Tom and Zawe have stayed quiet about their relationship but she has spent the last few weeks with him in the US.

'They are very well suited and enjoy the quieter side of life away from the glitz and glamour of the showbiz world.’
