The Texan Revolution formed from the anger of these white settlers in Texas, which was still part of Mexico at this time. They had moved from slave-owning southern part of the US and they became upset because the president of Mexico, Vicente Guerrero, abolished slavery. Mexico actually attempted to restrict American immigration into Mexico-owned Texas! The leaders of the Mexican centralist forces that defeated the Texan revolutionary forces at the Alamo were against slavery. If you ever hear a Texan say “Remember the Alamo!” just remember that the Texan settlers that died there had a vested interest in maintaining control of Texas territory so they could continue to use slave labor.

forget the alamo.

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life and am extremely proud of my Texas heritage. We are required to take a year of Texas history in school. When we learned about the Alamo, they NEVER told us about any of this.

Yeah, the south has a history of erasing history from their textbooks, there was a big push in the 50′s to revise their history books and distort things so that they push the south in a heroic light.

Went to my first ever MECHA meeting and I’m so fricken excited for the semester!

By any chance is anyone else part of a MECHA club??? If so what do you guys do to fundraise and also what events have you guys organized?

fam MEChA is a really problematic discourse for latinidad. it’s hard to see when you’re in the organization but please be wary of its associated privileges and discourses

leaving MEChA was one of the best things I could do for my latina identity

Ooo why???

It’s complex and layered, and by no means do I want to discredit Chicanx history in US civil rights, but the core foundations and social camaraderie of MEChA is ~too~ similar to Eurocentrism.

Let me explain to everyone reading. This is a bold claim, I’m sure, but it’s sound reasoning:

- MEChA’s core is about asserting an identity that ties Chicanxs to Indigenous ancestors in Mexico, but too often, that equates to Chicanxs falsely claiming they are Indigenous. Reminder: Native ancestry does not make a person Native (take note Elizabeth Warren lol)

- MEChA’s founding documents claim all Chicanxs are part of the nation of Aztlán, a region defined as the annexed territory Mexico lost to the USA. And in these 60 or so years since, Mechistas have reduced Mexico’s Indigenous cultures to one: the Aztec/Mexica. This recognition erases Indigenous diversity & struggles & histories into a romanticized version of Mexica identity.

- The idea of “Aztlán” as the lost Mexican territory also erases and marginalized Native populations in those areas at the same time.

Now there are some MEChA chapters that have been proactive, like I’ve heard of one that voted to remove all mentions of Aztlán from their constitution, and others that do not call themselves Natives, but they are the small exceptions.

I did have good times in MEChA too tho. I made some friends, educated people, so I don’t want to discredit the good that MEChA can do, but when it comes to holding itself accountable, there is resistance and no guidance. It can’t call itself a decolonizing movement on any front :/ part of my journey was unlearning Chicanismo and understanding it and Mestizaje as ideologies of power that are anti-Native and anti-Black. It was a hard realization, but it was necessary to decolonize who I am

But returning to your earlier question, idk what level your MEChA is at, but if you’re at a university, I would try writing personal letters to Deans of different colleges or department heads about your experience as a minority in college and how pledging some funding towards diversity causes makes them look good seems to work (work those angles). I think I was able to get about $800 from that.

Also, if your college has athletics, usually you can get paid as a group for working admissions or concessions for athletic events (try finding a staffing/event services department). And you can also reach out to MEChA alum and ask for donations. You can check in university archives to see if they have records of what past MEChA clubs have documented and try and get addresses from that or your school’s alumni organization

Today in labor history, January 28, 1917: 17-year old house cleaner Carmelita Torres leads what will become known as the “Bath Riots” at the Juarez/El Paso border, refusing the gasoline and chemical “bath” imposed on Mexican workers crossing the border into the U.S. Torres and 30 other women resisted and several hundred people quickly joined in the demonstration. Troops eventually quelled the riot and Torres was arrested. The practice continued for decades. [Photo: Mexican laborers being fumigated with the pesticide DDT in Hidalgo, Texas, in 1956.]

Carmelita Torres was A 17 year old housekeeper who resisted the humiliating mistreatment faced by migrant workers during one of her crossings. She convinced 30 other women to refuse being stripped and doused with gasoline and by that afternoon hundreds had joined them in protest.

Mexican women were at the forefront of the bath riots. Remember that!

It is important to add that the universally-reviled Adolf Hitler was especially appreciative of the way the USA corralled natives into concentration camps, as well as of how the US government set quotas and treatment at the borders based on race. Zyklon B—the gas his third reich later used in the mass gassing/extermination of Jews—was, in fact, the chemical used to douse the clothes of migrants. This is all documented and easy to verify. To this day, so many Americans pretend to Eternally Remember and Never Forget the Jewish Holocaust…but somehow never remember to mention how the USAs original (and modern day) conception and self-definition served as a model for that very holocaust.

my followers need to read this. yall are pretty good at doing what i say so read this post and reblog it.

I’ve never fucking heard of this holy shit

Please stop breeding :) faces, they might be cute but they have trouble breathing. Please consider the :-) breed or the :^) breed instead. They have the same temperament as the :) breed but with none of the breathing problems.
