The prices of meat and fish are ridiculous. I got a little bit of raw salmon for my cat and I can't believe I spent £4,99 on ONE thing. With that amount of money I could've gotten 1kg of carrots (40p), 3 cans of beans (30p each), 1kg of pasta (60p), 1kg broccoli (90p), 1 pack of tofu (£1,99) and I would still have 20p left for a pastry in the bakery...

But I guess being vegan is oh so expensive lol

ALL OF THESE REQUIRE GETTING OUT OF BED

For real, actionable advice feel free to skip ahead to the second big text. tl;dr look around the red text.

Why do people write this?

Typically advice for depressed people is written by people who aren't depressed. That does make sense since depression makes it so much more difficult to do things. Things that are done are most often done by people that find it easy to do things.

For the author, a making a cup of tea or sitting outside for a few minutes are examples of something that is a "free action". You might here someone express the belief that "willpower is infinite".

I used to think I could walk forever up until I did so for 9 hours. What is going on when someone writes this is that they never had to come up to these limits before. That leads to advice that isn't helpful to the people that need it most.

This is also a problem with physical exercise. Most people think of running or lifting weights as typical starting points. But what does someone who can't stand for long do?

The same principles apply, you stretch the muscles, they break, they repair. It's just that when you are starting from scratch, lifting the leg and standing or what have you is enough to do that.

So I am depressed and can't get out of bed. What do I do?

Just like with exercise we start small.

  1. Think about breathing manually. This is impossible to fail. You don't have to do anything besides think of breathing. And yet, as you do it it is proof you have some control still.
  2. Wiggle your fingers. Open and close your hand.
  3. Move your arm. Lift it up. It can be just at the elbow to start
  4. Put your hand in a position to push you to the side. It's okay if this just gets you to your side. That is progress
  5. Get the legs involved. You can start with the toes, then ankles, then up to your knees
  6. With more limbs involved we can shift over to the edge of the bed
  7. Get some legs off
  8. Sitting position
  9. Now stand up

Reading this you may find that it doesn't take that many steps. That's great. You may find that it takes more and that you have to recover from each one. That's fine too. The important part is that you gained some progress each time. Even if you fall back, it gets easier and easier to do the same thing, just like building muscle.

At the end of the day, no one is going to know how many steps you used to get out of bed. The trick is that when something seems insurmountable you break it down into small enough steps that the next one is doable to you personally.

Once you get it done, then that's as good as anyone else.

want your favorite author to update but don’t want to be too pushy in their comment section?

here’s 5 things you can do to encourage them:

  • Reblog their fic link on tumblr (bonus if it’s with tags)
  • Bookmark the fic with a note about what you’re excited about/love in the fic
  • Recommend the fic to your friends or local discord channel
  • Draw art or create other media for the fic (as indicated by the author’s comfort level)
  • Leave them a comment when re-reading about the parts of the chapter/story that stood out to you the second time

Seriously, guys, the cheer leading does help. Sometimes the only thing that gets the next chapter out is “I’m gonna do this for starfleetlinkuei69! ;_;”

For the record, this also applies to people who don't post WIPs. When I am deciding which of my various stories to work on, it's part vibes and part "What will make my Consistent Commenters happy?"

one time i left a silly comment on a two shot and it made the author laugh so hard they literally wrote a third chapter specifically for me because my comment made them laugh. comments are SO fucking important. even if you just comment a heart emoji it can literally be the difference between someone finishing a story or not. EXALT THE FIC WRITER!!!!

So I work at a library and about a month ago I helped a little old woman who is legally blind figure out how to listen to our audiobooks on her tablet. We got to chatting and I mentioned that I always listen to audiobooks while I knit, which made her very excited and she told me all about the afghans she used to make when she could still see. She was so sweet and I was so glad to be able to help her figure out a way to still enjoy books without being able to read.

Yesterday I answered the phone at work and when I said my name the woman on the other line got so excited and said “Madeline?? You’re exactly who I wanted to talk to! This is Marie Brandon, you helped me about a month ago. How late are you working today?” It was her!! And about an hour later she and her husband showed up, and she was carrying a huge stack of old knitting patterns for me, and her husband brought in a few boxes full of yarn. They couldn’t stay long but I was so touched that she remembered me, and I struggled to not just flat out start crying when she handed me the patterns. When I looked through them later I realized it was her entire personal collection from over the years, including all her personal notes and drawings and even some photographs of her finished pieces. No one in my family knits, and to have someone pass on their legacy to me like that was incredibly moving.

This isn’t what I usually post here, but with life being especially dark lately I wanted to share a moment of happiness and a reminder that a bit of kindness goes a long way ♡

I cannot stress enough she is a primary funder of transphobia. She is not just someone with bigoted views you can seperate from her work, her work funds the bigotry.
