Send me "I had to get close to you somehow," and my character will react to finding out the relationship our characters have built was all a complete lie for ulterior motives.

On The Road Again

Cas was alone on the road for at least eight months. Maybe nine. It was long enough that he suspected that their dad may never be coming back for him. It wouldn’t surprise him. He’d gotten by hitch-hiking through towns, working occasional part-time jobs so he could put a roof over his head.

Dad didn’t answer his phone. Any of his phones. Always going to voicemail and Cas refused to give him the satisfaction of begging. Sam’s number was programmed into speed dial but remained untouched. It was stared at for months, even cued up once or twice but never called.

When dad showed up again he was still pissed. Said how Cas had screwed up the number one rule dad had given him ever since he was a babe; look after Sam. Above hunting, above fighting, above everything. Sammy was his responsibility and he screwed up. He was going to have to work his ass off to make this up. Did he understand that?

Dad needed him for help on a job. Everyone, literally everyone else was busy. So did he feel ready to nut up and help do some actual work or was he going to puss out and screw it up again?

Cas soon learned that dad wasn’t really up for forgiving and forgetting. When dad got drunk, he’d rant about how Cas had dishonoured his mother’s memory. How their mother had given her very life to protect Sam; how she would be ashamed to know Cas had just let the baby walk out the door. When he got like that Cas just downed his own drink and gave half-hearted agreements.

The first time Cas texted Sam was after one loud drunken fight between Cas and his dad that resulted in Cas getting a black eye.

[text: Sam] I hope you’re doing okay. Mom would never forgive me if you got into any trouble.

Hello Darkness My Old Friend

Cas didn’t look up until he’d heard the door close. For a moment, for one single stupid little moment there he’d thought that Sammy was going to stay and they could go on like nothing had happened. But now he was gone. Their dad was coming back tomorrow and he was going to be so pissed. Looking after Sam was his job, it was the one thing he could do. It was all he was good for. What good would he be now?

To say dad was pissed was an understatement. There was screaming and throwing and shouting and threats. It ended like the day before with the only person that Cas thought may actually give a crap about him walking out the door and promising that he wasn’t coming back.

The door slammed shut and he knew no one was going to come back through it. The room was paid up till the morning but Cas checked out and headed to the nearest dive bar. In the last 24 hours Cas had lost the little bit that he had left in this cruel bitch of a world and the only thing that would help would be getting drunk off his ass until he couldn’t feel anymore.

After the first three beers he got his phone out and stared at the number he had for his brother.

The first time Cas killed something, it was a human. He was  a man, a hunter and he’d gotten obssessed with Samandriel, convinced he was a monster and doing his best to lure their dad away so he could try and kill Sammy.

Cas shot him with a shotgun their dad had left behind. Two shots square in the chest to stop him gutting his baby brother.

Cas cried. but he clung to Sammy, pulling him away from the scene so he wouldn’t see. Their dad was pissed but Cas was kind of numb to what happened after.

Sam patted his brother on the back, still a little confused. It wasn’t like this was the first time he’d ever been stabbed, hell, it didn’t even feel like the worst injury he’d ever had, so why was Cas so upset?

“Alright, alright, I get it, okay? Now are you gonna let go, or do you plan to crush me to death?”

He holds on a few minutes longer, holding him close before letting him go but still at least clinging to his shoulder, “Sammy I’m serious, you have got to be careful.” giving the shoulder a squeeze, he smiles, it falls on so easily because this is how it’s supposed to be, him and his brother back in the game, “If I wasn’t certain that I need you to have my back, your ass would be staying in that bed until this is over.”

Cas lingers for only a minute before pulling away and loading up his gun. “This is it Sammy.” There’s no hesitation in his actions; maybe a little fear in his eyes but everything would change today. It all hinged on the bother’s actions out there against the yellow-eyed demon. “This is our moment. Our revenge.”

He stood up as Cas entered the room, about to speak but being interrupted by the oof! of surprise as he was pulled into a hug. Why was he being hugged? “Cas? Jeez, how long was I out?” he asked, brow furrowing at the demand that seemed almost angry. “Not like I planned on getting stabbed.”

“Too damn long.” the hug lasted longer than it probably should but Cas honestly couldn’t care less. He’d gotten his brother back, and hell, if he thought he could get away with it he would hold on for the entire year. “Sammy you got to be careful. I know what I said when you were a kid but you ain’t invincible, kid.”

He wasn’t really sure what had happened. He remembered the fight, remembered winning the fight, remembered seeing Cas and feeling the sharp pain of being stabbed, and then…waking up. Cas was nowhere to be seen, but Sam supposed that it must have been his brother that patched him up. The wound barely even hurt.

So why didn’t he feel right?

“Cas? I’m in here,” he called out, sitting up on the bed with a quiet groan. “Where have you been?”

As soon as he hears his name, Cas rushes to the doorway and sure enough there he is. Sammy stood up, living, breathing. It worked. Oh god it worked. It actually worked. Without pausing, he crossed the room between them and pulled his brother into a tight hug. Holding him close. Yeah no, that’s real. Sammy is really actually alive. The demon had kept their end of the deal. So that meant....

He holds Sammy tighter against him. He made his choice. He’ll damn well live with it. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again."

Cas closed the door quietly, his heart in his throat as he worried that maybe the demon had stiffed him. If she had lied, he had a feeling she wouldn’t be up for another meeting to renegotiate. And besides, his brother wasn’t going to keep much longer.

Taking a tentative step forward, he calls out not entirely sure what’s he is hoping to happen in response. “Sammy?”

Alright, so he hadn’t been expecting a hug or anything like that, but a hello would have been nice. Better than the fake grin Cas was giving him at least.

“Growth spurts are wonderful things,” he replied, shrugging a shoulder as he actually moved into the room, sitting down in the chair opposite his brother. Cas was looking older. Older than Sammy would have expected him to look.

A pang of guilt ran through him at the last comment and he dropped his gaze for a moment, letting his eyes flick to the mirror before moving back to Cas again. “Your picture’s all over the news, Cas, they didn’t need to call me.”

“Figured you were probably overdue for one.” Cas shrugged.

He seemed unphased by the unspoken accusations against him and he followed his brother’s eyes to glance at the mirror. “And they let you in to get a confession from me.” it was kind of obvious. “Well, I didn’t do those home invasions but you know they won’t believe that right?”

And frankly that was all he was willing to dedicate to this conversation. “How you doing anyway? You still with Hael?”

It had been a totally normal day, right up until it wasn’t any more.

Sammy had been sitting in a coffee shop on campus to do some sketches, filling in blank sections in his sketchpad ahead of the submission date that was approaching a little too quickly, when he happened to glance up at the TV and right into the face of his brother.

His brother who was being accused (almost definitely correctly) of murder.

“Damn it, Cas,” he muttered, shoving everything into his bag before practically running out of the shop.

It had been surprisingly easy to convince the cops to let him in to see his brother; he figured that maybe they were hoping Cas would confess to him or something, but Sammy knew that wouldn’t happen. Cas wasn’t that dumb.

Still, he couldn’t help but be a little nervous as he was led to the interrogation room, offering a sheepish wave as the door opened.

“Hey, Cas.”

Yeah if there was a top five list of people he didn’t want to see walk through that door, his little brother was probably pretty close to the top. Screw it, why lie to himself. He was at the top.

“You look taller.” he commented with a slightly cocky grin. It’s a shoddy grin because beneath it he is secretly freaking out. Sam is supposed to be living his normal life. What is he doing here?

Still Cas didn’t let it show as he shifted back in his seat, raising his cuffed hands from beneath the table and placing them on obvious display to his brother. A little subtle reminder of what he was trying to get away from three years ago. “Well I know they didn’t call you. As per your final request I didn’t give your number to anyone.”

“Oh ye of little imagination.” reaching to his side he picks up his jacket and swings it around his shoulders. “I mean what can you have with pancakes? Syrup? Oh how original.”

“Bananas. Ice cream. Whipped cream. Chocolate sauce. Fruit. All of the above. Pancakes aren’t supposed to be part of a meal, Cas, they’re supposed to be the whole thing,” he said, a smile creeping onto his face. “A PB and J is just a soggy, goopy sandwich. Sorry, bro, I think I win.”

He grabs his keys “Just for that insult, you don’t get to have any of those with your pancakes.” and heads for the door, gesturing for his brother to move through it, as he opens it. “Just syrup.” he may be joking.

Leaving hadn’t been a spur of the moment impulse; it had built up over time, months, years even. Sammy had always wanted to escape their freaky life and find something normal to settle down to.

So he had hatched a plan.

Admittedly the first part, the part where he snuck out without anyone catching him, hadn’t gone so well, but the rest? The rest went smoothly enough. He stole a car from the motel parking lot and drove it to a couple of towns over, getting some distance between him and his family before he caught a bus cross-country.

It wasn’t until he was there, staring out of the window, that he dared think about what he was doing. He had applied to a few colleges and had even managed to get into one, there was a dorm room waiting for him and everything It was strange and exciting, and just a little bit terrifying.

Sammy settled back into his seat and closed his eyes, drifting off into a dream of what his new, normal life was going to be like.

Cas was sat in the interrogation room of this strange police station, silently cursing himself. He should’ve got through this damn shifter quicker. Chasing him across two states was a mistake. Should’ve taken the bastard down on day one. Never should’ve let it get this bad.

The son of a bitch had been doing home invasions wearing Cas’s face and then the police had caught up to him just as the hunter had cut his head off. Leaving Cas in a whole heap of trouble and, until he could get five minutes to himself to get the bobby pin out of his shoe, no way to get out.

See, sat opposite him was a real hardass who seemed intent on yelling a confession out of him but Cas honestly didn’t care and just stared back at him, quipping in when he paused to take breath. The yelling only stopped when someone came in and whispered into the guy’s ear.

“Well Novak, I guess someone up there likes you.” the officer pulled his papers together. “You got a visitor.”

That made him sit forward and pay attention. There were only two people who the visitor could be and neither of them was the person who walked through the door.

“First, if it’s a true PB and J it won’t be goopy. And Two it is the perfect accompaniment to many foods.” he could see the grin trying break ree and he just smirked knowingly. He was more than willing to educate his brother on the intricacies of foods and their place within the world.

Sammy raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall. “Yeah? And what kind of foods can a PB and J accompany? A stack of potato chips?” he asked doubtfully.

“Oh ye of little imagination.” reaching to his side he picks up his jacket and swings it around his shoulders. “I mean what can you have with pancakes? Syrup? Oh how original.”

Sammy winced, taking half a step back. He couldn’t deny that what Cas said was true, but not for the reason that his brother thought. He would have been long gone, not because he didn’t want Cas to go with him, but because he knew that Cas would try to stop him from leaving at all.

But now Cas was turning away from him and it felt like a kick to the ribs.

“I-I don’t want to lose you, Cas,” he said softly, hesitating for a moment before grabbing a sketchpad out of his bag and scribbling something on it. “This is my new number. Just…just please call me, okay, any time you want to talk? And…don’t give it to dad.” Sammy tore out the page and put it on the table before tucking the pad away again and hoisting his bag onto his shoulder.

It was a lot harder than he had thought it would be, turning away from his brother and opening the door, and he very nearly stopped, but he had made up his mind. Sammy paused for only a moment before he left the motel room, murmuring a soft goodbye as he closed the door behind him.

Cas didn’t look up until he’d heard the door close. For a moment, for one single stupid little moment there he’d thought that Sammy was going to stay and they could go on like nothing had happened. But now he was gone. Their dad was coming back tomorrow and he was going to be so pissed. Lookng after Sam was his job, it always had been. What was he supposed to say? “Yeah i was watching Dad. I watched him walk right out the door.”

Twenty minutes of not watching whatever inane piece of crap was on TV and Cas got to his feet, crossing over to the table and just staring at the numbers that were now the only remaining lifeline between him and his brother.

Less than five minutes later, the number is on his phone and the paper’s in his mouth. Their dad had a habit of going through the trash so he couldn’t just throw it away. He hoped Sam liked ‘normality’. He deserved it.
