#NewRelease in Cookbooks: SHAKE SHACK: Recipes & Stories by Randy Garutti & Mark Rosati "My mouth started watering the moment I first heard about Shake Shack, two years before I moved to New York (where it was founded). Once I moved to New York, Shake Shack became the go-to any time anyone from out of town wanted to meet up. And any time anyone in town wanted to meet up. And any time for just me. Now that I live once more in sadly Shack-less Northern California, I can’t wait for this new book with (delicious) recipes and stories from the company that is redefining chain food in terms of locality and neighborhood." - Jocelyn #newreleasetuesday #cookbooks #shakeshack #randygarutti #markrosati #burgers #hamburgers #stories #delicious #yum #newyorkcity #stafffav #clarksonpotter #bookrecommendations #cookbookrecommendations #summer (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease THE POTLIKKER PAPERS: A Food History of the Modern South by John T. Edge " My favorite kind of summer read is an engrossing culinary book, and if it’s about Southern food, all the better. As director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, John T. Edge has credentials to write this “food history of the modern South,” but more than that, he is a terrific writer who cares about the ways that race has shaped what and how we eat. I am particularly interested in reading Edge’s take on how “[Southern] food and eating intertwine inextricably with politics and social history.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review.)" - S.B., Head Cookbook Buyer #newreleasetuesday #foodwriting #thepotlikkerpapers #johntedge #foodhistory #thesouth #southern #southernfood #bookrecommendations (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease now out in paperback: HAG-SEED, the most recent novel by Margaret Atwood "With her poetic language and impeccable dramatic timing, Margaret Atwood has crafted an altogether compelling retelling of The Tempest. Prospero is an aging, grieving father named Felix Phillips. The island is a literal prison where, after having been relieved of his duties as a theater festival’s artistic director, Phillips teaches inmates Shakespeare. For an Atwood and Shakespeare fan, this book is a perfect storm. It gives plenty of nods to its source but is a fantastic story on its own. Just remember: The play’s the thing." - Ivy #newreleasetuesday #paperbackrelease #hagseed #margaretatwood #thetempest #hogarthshakespeare #shakespeare #retelling #fiction #novel #theatre #theplaysthething #stafffav #bookrecommendations (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#FridayReads PRIESTDADDY: A Memoir by Patricia Lockwood " Normally I shy away from memoirs written by poets, afraid that their style of writing won’t translate into a cohesive narrative. But Patricia Lockwood’s clever turns of phrase and eccentric personality are right at home in this book, which is primarily the story of her beer-drinking Catholic priest of a father and how growing up in this paradoxical environment shaped her life. It’s real and irreverent and will delight fans of Jenny Lawson and Mary Karr." - Louise What are you reading? #friday #reading #priestdaddy #patricialockwood #memoir #nonfiction #poets #catholicpriest #father #daddy #quirky #irreverant #stafffav #bookrecommendations #whatareyoureading (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease HOUSE OF NAMES by Colm Toibin "Murder, revenge and unforgivable transgressions scar the pages of Tóibín’s latest novel. In his brutal retelling of the classical Greek tragedy, Clytemnestra vows revenge after Agamemnon’s sacrificial slaughter of their eldest daughter. I appreciated the first-person narrative accounts of the women in this book, although they were rife with hostility. Not recommended for the faint of heart!" - Ashley #newreleasetuesday #houseofnames #colmtoibin #fiction #retelling #greektragedy #novel #agamemnon #clytemnestra #oresteia #classic #stafffav #bookrecommendations #notforthefaintofheart (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease OCTOBER: The Story of the Russian Revolution by China Mieville "Miéville manages to take a chaotic and confusing moment in history and make it thrillingly present. On this, the hundredth anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917, it’s fascinating and instructive to look back at the revolution that continues to have such reverberations around the world. Written with brilliant, illuminating, and immersive prose, October will make you feel as though you jumped on the Trans-Siberian Express to experience the revolution yourself." - Jax #newreleasetuesday #october #chinamieville #russianrevolution #nonfiction #history #anniversary #1917 #russia #revolution #stafffav #bookrecommendations (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease MEN WITHOUT WOMEN: Stories by Haruki Murakami " In one story, a man dies of lovesickness; in another, a man learns of the death of his grade-school crush from an alarming late-night call. This is vintage Murakami: mysterious abandonments that lead to journeys of self-discovery, nostalgic narrators waxing poetic about romantic days of yore. Nods to the Beatles, Hemingway, and Kafka add flavor to this elegant selection of stories. A must-have for all Murakami fans." - Jason #newreleasetuesday #menwithoutwomen #harukimurakami #shortstories #murakami #stories #fiction #bookrecommendations (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#SFFSaturday THE DASTARDLY MISS LIZZIE by Viola Carr "My love for the Electric Empire series is immeasurable, and the newest installment is now out! Get reunited with forensic scientist Dr. Eliza Jekyll and her deliciously diabolical other half, Lizzie Hyde. It's an exciting, action-packed caper through a supernatural Edwardian London. Good luck trying to stay one step ahead of this dueling "duo" as they race to catch a murderer!" - Kelly #sffsat #sff #thedastardlymisslizzie #violacarr #electricempire #edwardian #supernatural #london #jekyllandhyde #stafffav #bookrecommendations #sciencefiction #fantasy (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#FridayReads THE ZOO by Isobel Charman "I just finished this amazing book that looks at the creation and formative years of the London Zoo through the eyes (and writings) of the men who were there. It's fascinating to see the different perspectives and priorities of the animal preserver (for example) compared to the architect or head keeper or surgeon. Young Charles Darwin was a favorite, seeing him wrestle with his discoveries and balance them with the social politics of the era. Zoo can be a hard read at times, since they were importing animals they had never seen before, let alone knew how to provide basic food and housing (and air in some cases). But even with hardship, or because of it, it was a joy to read about how dedicated most were to science and the goal of bringing such exotic wonder to people in this capacity." - Rachel What are you reading? #friday #amreading #thezoo #isobelcharman #londonzoo #history #animals #stewardship #stafffav #bookrecommendations #whatareyoureading (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)

#NewRelease THE AWKWARD THOUGHTS OF J. KAMAU BELL by J. Kamau Bell "Hilarious essays on race, gender and pop culture by the host of CNN’s United Shades of America. Kamau is a self-proclaimed Blerd (a black nerd) who writes as effortlessly about Michael Jordan and Spiderman as he does being a Cisgendered male getting woke-schooled by a feminist. This book will inspire you to raise a fist in solidarity as often as it will make you laugh." - Jason #newreleasetuesday #theawkwardthoughtsofjkamaubell #jkamaubell #nonfiction #race #gender #essays #funny #popculture #blerd #stafffav #bookrecommendations #duttonbooks (at Bookshop Santa Cruz)
