Automattic will sign a contract with OpenAI for Midjourney to learn off of Tumblr and Wordpress

Hello! Automattic, Tumblr's parent company, will sign a contract with OpenAI and Midjourney so Midjourney can learn off of Tumblr's and WordPress' art and other user data. :) (The full text of this article is copy/pasted in the cut below). You can opt out! but I truly cannot imagine a more idiotic or out of touch decision on the part of Tumblr's CEO.

First thing's first: When/if this goes live, opt out of this immediately. Do this even if you're not an artist. The more people opt out, the less valuable this contract is to Midjourney. in an ideal world, literally all of the active users would opt out, but if we can even get to 50% that's pretty delicious.

Second: Contact Tumblr Support. It's vital that you do this politely. Tumblr staff is not responsible for this decision and the point of doing this is to show the userbase's unwillingness to be involved in this, not harangue Tumblr staff. (Seriously, stop haranguing Tumblr staff). Here's a script:

Is there a reason my Stargate gif post is not appearing when I search with the tags I used? There is literally no reason for the post not to show. It’s not flagged, the tags are fine.

EDIT: I used the word “hate” in tags, that made it unsearchable. I removed it an now the post appears.

A mixed mod I’ve been working on since last week, based on a reference from @katekittaly because I have the fashion sense of a cave troll. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The mod has two versions once again - one with a black undershirt to go around the skin-problem and one without. I also decided for once to give Ignis a bit more of an accessory than just his necklace and added a ring with a wolf-design that I made ages ago for something else.

Both mods are available on Steam. :)

For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

With the release of Blender 2.8 Beta I decided to hop into the cold water and give Eevee, the new real time render engine another try after falling onto my nose with it in summer.

Above you can see some comparison shots between Cycles on the left (and the first big picture) with Eevee on the right (and the second picture). The light-setup and the materials for the skin are identical yet have completely different results. I thought at first I was too dumb to use Eevee (which I am really most likely) but after cross checking the materials with a friend we realized that she had almost the same results with a few improvements on her side. While materials, lighting and shadows of Eevee can’t stand against Cycles in my eyes at the moment (I’m no Blender expert, so bare with me) Eevee has some features that really make up for it though. A picture is done in 2 minutes (opposed to hours in Cycles), Eevee is not nearly as heavy on the system as Cycles and the implemented Bloom-Feature creates a realistic effect instantly while you have to use the compositor in Cycles for that… which adds another few hours or work time.

I will most likely stick to Cycles for the time being because of the results and because I’m a very slow learner, but seeing what can be possible in only a nick of an eye with Eevee is quite impressive.

And since I still have the transparent render of the Cycles-render on my harddrive I guess I will do some photoshopping on it, when I have the time to see what I can do with it.

That being said - on a different note. A lot of people are wondering what some of the FFXV-artists are doing, now that Tumblr is becoming this poof of a mess. I for my part will stay here until the ship is sinking. Tumblr offers me some upload features that I don’t have on Deviantart or Twitter and since I’m crossposting on all platforms at the same time anyway (minus the screenshots - they are Tumblr and Twitter only), there is not much change for me in it. If you want to follow me on my other accounts, I posted them in an ask yesterday but of course you don’t have to, as long as this dishrag that is me is hanging around on Tumblr. :)
