Concept Art of The Iron Bull - With One Arm
This. This.  I think I may make an AU for Amputee!Bull because… he’s just so, so important. You don’t understand how impactful such a thing would have been, not only to his Character Development, his relationship with the Qun, and his relationship with others…. but because of how important it would have been to what he means for so many people.
Already, Bull is a multi-faceted, self-standing, successful example of a woefully underrepresented portion of the population. He is “Other” in so many ways, he is traditionally flawed and insufficient in so many ways. But Bull is also so much more than the elements that make him up, than his history and his people. He is one of the greatest examples of taking perceived shortcomings and making them into strengths, making them into a catalyst of fire that forges you into a better person.
Can you see, how great it would have been to incorporate the loss of a pivotal physical asset, like a hand, into that dynamic mix? Can you see how much it might have meant to those who struggle with their own physical limitations, or even mental limitations, how important it is to show that there really is NO SUCH THING as being Handicapped? Bull is who he chooses to be, Always. No matter what Cost.
And so are we. That’s just… it’s important.

Note: Someone pointed out to me ages ago that Bull still qualifies as an amputee inasmuch that he had lost his eye. I totally agree, and think that very important distinction applies to everything I have previously written above. Evenso, I would have loved to see him written as a disabled person who incorporated the loss of his forearm into a unique and powerful tool, both physically and socially.

All the opportunities for awesome formal outfits at Halamshiral and we got shoulder pads. Still feeling really cheated there. I designed something for bull with the express idea that nothing would go over his head so nothing would catch on his horns. Took a lot of convincing from Josie, and Vivienne had her own things to say, but Bull conceded as long as there were pink flowers. Gotta love that dawnstone.

The hour was early. Early enough for Iron Bull to be a creature of monosyllabic grunts and sleep-stiffened movement. The verbal repartee and fighter’s grace would have to come later, after some stretching and a proper breakfast. Mmm, Nug Bacon Sarnie...

Clearing his throat, the Qunari rubbed the itch from his empty eyesocket and settled his patch in place over the tanglework of scars. He drew a deep inhalation from the crip morning air, subconsciously scenting the camp for the smoke of breakfast fires...

Iron Bull’s eye          – or the socket that once held his eye –                                                          doesn’t pain him. Not often, anyway.  But there is a… a certain hollowness to it, sometimes. As if the sense-memory of casting a look                          (one that once required two eyes) causes the scar tissue beneath his patch to tighten, creak & ache in useless protest at the perpetual darkness. It’s a familiar sensation, just a twinge, while his good eye sweeps away and up, clouding with the veil of past memory. Because despite inconvenience, despite pain, Bull will never have reason to regret the hole in his face.  Not when he glances to his right                           (always his right, away from the patch)                                                                             and sees Krem, That little shit. Best man he has. Imposing and Short and Laughing and Whole.                               No, The eye? The Eye doesn’t pain him.

For such a large keep, Skyhold could be awfully fucking crowded. Or maybe it just felt that way, when the recent years of Iron Bull's life were marked by wide open space and a cloudless canopy sky at dusk. Only his Chargers and the stars for company.                                                                        Asit tal-eb Except, no, those days are in the past, and no wonder. Shooting a glance to the acid-green split of skyline, Bull braced his palms on the rampart’s stone barrier. He leaned over the squat railing and stared at the mountains laid at the castle’s feet. This was -- is -- where he wanted to be, horns-deep in the only alliance able to make a difference against a tear in the sky.                                              The inquisition. Asit tal-eb. The Qunari drew in a slow, stifled breath {broken nose, what a bitch} and  willed himself to block out the ever-present chatter secrets din of people milling in the yard below. He consciously let his shoulders unclench from around his ears, packed muscle stretching out with the roll & crack of his neck. Eyepatch tipped away, Bull spoke to the figure he could sense hover at his back, "...y'might as well come out, friend. It's just you’n me up on this big stone wall. Eh?"
