With infinite sadness I say good bye to my best friend.

During his 16 wonderful years this little man has so profoundly changed me as a person. He steered the course of my friendships, my career and my life.

He was so loved and had so much love to give. He touched and inspired the lives of many.

Rest now my good boy. Your watch has ended.

Holler Shelp lovers and FYSheltie followers!

Long time no post.

Shakespeare just celebrated his 16th birthday.

I’d love to tell you that he is doing great but he is very clearly very old, despite his boyish good looks.

He can’t really walk so well, never mind about standing up on his own. He is a slow moving guy. He gets Sub-Q 2x a week for his kidneys. He is still on seizure meds since that last time. Right now he has some sort of an eye infection that we are putting in drops for. He definitely is entering the doggie dementia world where he has confused day and night.

He has good days and bad days,

When the days are good, he is interactive and present. He begs for food at dinner time and follows you around the house. He can even still do a few commands. He lets us  know when things are wrong (like a slipper is in his favorite laying spot or a pot of water is boiling on the stove.

But when his days are bad, it is very hard on me because I know a decision will have to come at some point in the future. I choose not to think about that at the moment.

He is a tough old coot though and much like the energizer bunny he keeps on going. And I love him to pieces.

Living with an extremely senior dog is NOT easy. Shakes is now on the other side of 15 and a half. But as my vet let slip out, Shakes is a “tough little mother fucker” and indeed he is. If you have questions about caring for a Senior, drop me a line. I do not know everything but I do live and breathe this every day.
