In an interview with MAGES Director Makoto Asada via the Japanese outlet Dengeki, a lengthy conversation regarding MAGES’ developments, particularly regarding the Infinity visual novel series, was conducted.

Our team’s Ryuji has translated significant exchanges from this interview, quoted below:

Interviewer: This is just a personal question of mine, but do you have any plans of remaking past adventures and/or series in the foreseeable future?
Makoto Asada: I’ve probably never told this to anyone, but there was a staff member within the company saying he wanted to do a remake or a port of the Infinity series, such as Never7 and Ever17, and my response was: “If you can make it so it’s easy to play in the current gaming climate, I don’t mind if you do.” That staff member has begun preparations, and now we are beginning to make some progress by clawing through old resources.
Interviewer: Oh my, really?! I’m so excited!!!
Makoto Asada: We have asked the staff who worked on the previous remake of Ever17 for the Xbox 360, and although we changed the standing pictures to 3D at that time, many of them said they would have preferred 2D, so we will be refining this area. However, the scenario updates were generally well received, so I told them that if they were going to remake the games this time, they should take that into consideration and rework it.
We have staff members who were involved in the project at that time, so I don’t think there is any need to worry about that for the time being. Please wait a little longer until we can officially tell you about it, but yes, plans are in motion to remake the series.
Interviewer: I’m sure a lot of fans will be excited to hear this!
Makoto Asada: I wasn’t involved in the Infinity series in the first place, but there are many fans who have loved those titles for a long time, so I was hoping to release them in an environment that would make them easier to play.

The Infinity series is an often-overlooked visual novel franchise mostly penned by Kotaro Uchikoshi, who many now know for the Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files games. There is quite a lot going on in these games, but they strongly focus on sci-fi elements, such as time travel. Granted, the first game, Never 7: The End of Infinity, was more of a romantic experience than anything else. However, the later entries would hone in on the sci-fi elements far more, and certain elements here inspired Uchikoshi’s future works.

The most popular entry is undeniably Ever 17: The Out of Infinity, which detailed a cast stuck in an underwater theme park that will supposedly explode. This title received a remake in 2011 that implemented various changes, including narrative alterations, alongside new music and artwork.

We’ll definitely keep you all updated on any significant developments regarding this remake project.

Otome visual novel Birushana: Rising Flower of Genpei will launch for Switch on June 28 in North America and July 1 in Europe, publisher Idea Factory International announced.

The limited edition will include a copy of the game with reversible cover, steel game case, official hardcover art book, two-disc audio drama and original soundtrack set, five-card double-sided bromide set, exclusive trading card, and a collector’s box.

Birushana: Rising Flower of Genpei first launched for Switch on September 17, 2020 in Japan.

Here is an overview of the game, via Idea Factory International:

About

Fifteen years after the Heiji Rebellion, the Heike clan has reached the height of its power, while the Genji clan remains devastated by defeat. Hidden deep within the mountains of Kurama lives Shanao, the youngest surviving male heir to the Genji name. However, Shanao harbors a deep secret known by very few.
The youngest heir to the Genji name is no man.
Torn between her duty to live up to the Genji family name and her desire to live a peaceful life, Shanao sets off in hopes to take down the Heike stronghold and finally bring peace in the country. Her adventure leads her to find new cherished relationships, as well as something deeper than the feud between the rivaling clans.

Key Features

  • The Object of My Affection – Shanao will encounter five potential routes, each with an Affection Level – a meter that shows how much you have progressed with the character based on the choices made. Once you’ve decided on your route, maintain your Affection Level to get up close and personal with someone…
  • Testing My Abilities – There are three Character Abilities Shanao possesses: Strength, Knowledge, and Kindness. As you progress, you are given choices that will affect her Character Abilities. Try to find an equal balance for all 3 abilities. Too high or low of any ability can trigger a bad outcome!
  • Apple of My Ai – The Ai-Catch system allow players to gauge how their choices affect a character’s Affection Level and Shanao’s Character Abilities in real time! A seedling will indicate a poor Affection Level, while a blooming flower shows a promising Affection Level. The outer frame of the screen will also change into three colors: Red, Blue, and Green. Respectively, each color is associated with Shanao’s Character Ability: Strength, Knowledge, and Kindness. Keeping a close tab on your decision can help Shanao reach her true ending!
  • Take Another Stab – After completing a chapter, players can revisit it and manipulate the Affection Levels and Character Abilities—the two main measures that determines the progress of a route. If you feel Shanao is headed down the wrong path, replay the chapter and get back on track!

Broccoli will release a localized version of Jack Jeanne for Switch in English and Traditional Chinese, the company announced. A release date was not announced.

The otome visual novel first launched for Switch on March 18, 2021 in Japan.

Here is an overview of the game, via our previous coverage:

About

Tamasaka is an opera troupe consisting only of men, who also play women. The troupe owns the Univers Opera School, which raises actors while putting on performances. Every performance invites the audience to an overwhelmingly flashy world and never fails to keep their attention.
The talented students of the hard-to-enter school are broken up into four classes to study theater, as well as compete for the title of Top Class at Univers.
The protagonist, Kisa Tachibana, who had given up on a life of theater, receives special permission to attend Univers Opera School following a certain event as long as she fulfills two conditions.
One of those conditions is to star in the final performance at the end of the year.
The other is to hide the fact that she is a woman…
To make her dreams come true, and to help her pupils, the protagonist will deepen her bonds with the classmates that become her “cogs.”
What future awaits the protagonist after spending the year with her classmates…?

Key Features

  • Story – You are protagonist Kisa Tachibana (first name changeable), a new student enrolled at the boys-only Univers Opera School, hiding the fact that you are a girl. Devote each day to stage rehearsals while spending your school life with your individual classmates.
  • Simulation – Your missions are to lead your class to victory and to be chosen as the lead role for the final performance. Compete against gifted rival classmates in attempts to achieve your goals. Perhaps what you need for that is more than just good performance results…? The choice you make will have a major impact on the ending of the story.
  • Rhythm Game – Performance parts play out as rhythm games. There are two types of rhythm parts: singing parts where you can enjoy hearing the characters sing, as well as parts where you can enjoy full-blown dances choreographed by Seishiro. With simple controls and genuine rhythm action, bring your class’ performance to life.

Medium has announced Chronicles of Refugia. This is the newly established company’s first game, but this joseimuke adventure title features renowned figures from the visual novel industry such as Yone Kazuki, Takako Kano, Nikai Ninomae, and ZIZZ Studio. The title will be released on Steam in an episodic format and launch is expected for 2022 with both Japanese and English text options.

Chronicles of Refugia takes place in the Asian setting of Hourei Island after global warming aftereffects led to a catastrophic scenario of near-extinction. To make matters worse, violent conflicts using android soldiers and drones caused even more destruction. Now, in the year 23XX, what remains of humanity lives in designated shelters.

This is the story of three Alices, each of which has their own agenda. First of all, we have the Iron-Willed Proprietess of Casino Club, also known as Werewolf Alice. Her efforts developed Hourei Island over the years, but she’s seen as a tyrant by the locals.

The second one is the Human Alice, Arisu. He used to work as a doctor on an archipelago far away. He has unremarkable looks, he’s considered the rare type of ordinary human. Arisu’s mindset is pessimistic and he avoids conflicts with others.

The third one is the mysterious Airei. Coming from Tokyo, she’s a cheerful person who’s very sociable but maybe she’s hiding something behind that smile. She goes to Hourei Island during her summer break. There are rumors that she used to be a pop star.

The recently-named Hourei Island is only one square mile in size, but it features various popular locales. The first of which is Alice’s Casino Club, a nigh spot for wealthy patrons filled with vintage furniture. For those looking for a cheaper time, the island has a restaurant called Millennium Kitchen. Casino workers can eat there for free but everyone enjoys their daily specials. The chef Míng is also respected deeply by everyone.

One of the island’s known stores is Boutique Хревников, which is run by the eccentric Graea. Though people love to gossip about him, everyone enjoys the quality products from his store. There’s also the relaxing Mad Hat Teahouse, whose enigmatic owner Noah is almost never around, and the Wildcat Theater which offers a variety of spectacles in the casino’s basement.

Chronicles of Refugia‘s story was created and planned by Takako Kano (Ken ga Kimi, Galtia) and co-written by Nikai Ninomae (Norn9 Last Era, Galtia, Les Grandes Odalisques). The character designs are by Yone Kazuki (Hakuoki, Hiiro no Kakera, Kamigami no Asobi).

The soundtrack is composed and performed by ZIZZ Studio (Mary Skelter series, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, The Song of Saya) with Itou Kanako, Watanabe Kazuhiro and Stella Lee Jones performing the vocals for the game’s main themes. The English translation is handled by Molly Lee, who previously worked on Taisho x Alice, You and Me and Her: A Love Story, Sweet Pool and other titles.

Check out the first trailer below with the main theme of the game, ‘Refugia’:

Man, seeing all the Cage fans rallying around the remake is awesome to see. What other ten year old BL game generates so much enthusiasm outside of maybe N+C games? Mebiusline and Shingakkou are commonly considered the greatest BL games ever made and are getting a similar amount of talk in the thread as Cage. (Of course it’s probably just because of the coming remake, yes, but still!)

Thesis: the rise of fanwank and anti culture correlates directly with diminished understanding of what “romantic”, in a literary sense, actually means.

It doesn’t mean “this is ideal or healthy or even realistic”. It means “this is beautiful, this is tragic, this is grotesque, this stirs emotion”, even if it’s not, as @starryroom puts it, something you would be comfortable seeing play out in front of you at Taco Bell. It’s about grandiosity and mythology and heroism writ large. It’s about playing with the id, as beautiful and terrible as it can be.

LET LOVE AND LUST BE MONSTROUS.

konno teppei appreciation post

literally the first exposure to the mc of cage is this beautiful portrait:

followed by:

so you’re thinking he’s a pretty simpy guy, right? well, you’ll see!

Konno is one of the most refreshing MCs I’ve ever seen in a BL VN. Cute design aside- man, he rocks purple- he’s actually a really relatable character, even if you can’t exactly identify with being thrown into a death game. He’s kind-hearted, but not a doormat, and isn’t afraid to fight to get what he wants. He loves his family dearly, wanting to take them on a trip, which is honestly something I appreciated- I feel like with BL (and visual novels in general), most of the time, it’s as if the only significant relationship that exists is the one between the MC and the love interest. But no, you can genuinely feel the connection he has to his little brothers and sisters.

He can be stubborn and a bit hot-headed, but not in that overly aggressive dumb jock way- rather, he’s actually really empathetic and sincere. He wears his heart on his sleeve but isn’t well, for lack of a better term, ukey about it. The introspection he experiences is really engaging in that it doesn’t feel overly self righteous or pretentious? It feels very much human, and that’s where he shines- in such a dark, gritty setting, Konno grounds the fiction being portrayed. He isn’t a well of despair and angst, but he isn’t annoyingly optimistic- he’s just your everyday normal guy, which is something you need to help you get through the craziness. But that’s not to say he’s boring or bland- in fact, he does make some surprising decisions.

plus, he’s got the cutest smile ever.

Anime talk with straight dudes: “Goku punch harder than naruto”

Anime talk with other queer people: “Do you think the modern magical girl anime often puts such a focus on the girls maturing as a metaphor for the way that girls in society are often thrust into maturity before they’re ready, while boy shonen protagonists get multiple arcs of maturing before becoming a hero, shoujo girls are often forced to make the transition in 1 or 2 episodes”
