I'm dyin' here, what's the name of that novel series about the aliens that look like mantis people and the series is about them interacting and living alongside and combining with humanity? It's killing me that I can't remember.

Novels in Alan Dean Foster’s Humanx Commonwealth universe!

This is the one about their first contact:

This one is followed by the books Phylogenesis, Diuturnity’s Dawn, and Dirge.

Humans and arthropods work out all their weird differences, make friends, and in a possible dig against Star Trek style aliens, they defeat an incredibly evil species that happens to look a lot like us only Always Sexy.

Note to self: Read this book.

I HATE it when authors assume that arthropod aliens are always evil or always a hivemind, so this sounds like a breath of fresh air.

A great detail about the Thranx is that they were a eusocial species where reproductive queens were cared for by sterilized, expendable workers who were viewed as unintelligent, but this changed over several generations of intense civil uprising. By the time of the books, all Thranx have equal rights and can reproduce with the aid of pharmaceuticals, though there’s still some hateful and backwards elite hanging on who think “the natural way” was inherently better.

Also their discovery of humans rocked their understanding of physics because they were absolutely certain a vertebrate our size would collapse right off of its gross, weird internal skeleton
