“How you feeling?” Cooper asked, bumping his brother’s shoulder with his own.

“Kind of nervous,” Blaine answered.

“Oh, don’t be,” said Cooper, wrapping his arm around Blaine’s shoulders. “You’ll do just fine!”

The Spinner’s Truth

Summary: A spell is sweeping over the forest and killing the fairies who fly there. Kurt refuses to stand back and watch his people die, so he sets off to see the fabled Spinner, in the hopes that together they can save the forest. Word Count: 7448 Rating/Warnings: T (death, angst, blind character, happy ending) Notes: This story was written in a day. The highest of praises to tarabottiwrites, who drew the most amazing art which inspired the whole thing. A huge thank you to Em, who helped me come up with the beginnings of a plot and inspired the name of the Spinner, as well as offering her beta skills at the absolute last minute. Thank you to tchrgleek for sitting in the doc with me, to Lorna for cheering me on, and to everyone who wished me luck when I set out on this adventure.

The spell took no hostages. By the half moon, almost the entire population had been shut down. Fairies fell from the skies in their dozens, wings dried up and bodies curled in on themselves. There was no coming back. The first light of dawn withered the fairies who fell in the night, turning their icy torsos to dust and scattering them to the four winds.

It took the sunflower fields first, and moved swiftly through the corn, wheat, and hay. Every morning, Kurt awoke to a new list of the fallen posted on the Old Oak. The Seven Elders predicted that the spell would reach the outer edges of the forest by the next moon phase, and take the entire area by the new moon. Remaining fairies were advised to evacuate to the central clearing in the forest, but many were resigned to staying in their homes.

There was no outrunning the inevitable.

The fairies that did move were the youngest, or those who had children. The ones who hadn’t experienced enough of the world to give up hope yet. The ones who had something left to fight for.

Blaine Anderson is five years old and quietly playing in his parents’ backyard when Cooper decides to play a prank on him.

As in, “borrowing” the neighbors’ dog and spraying white paint down his back.

The dog has never been particularly friendly towards Blaine–the dog is not particularly friendly towards anybody, for that matter–and Cooper expects him to bark at Blaine, maybe chase him around a little.

Definitely give him a good scare that will teach him not to mess with Cooper’s Dinky Toys.

Cooper knows that he’s not the best brother ever, but he never, never expected the dog to go almost rabid on his baby brother.

Nor for Blaine to literally freeze, paralyzed by fear as the dog barrelled across the garden and towards him, snout wrinkled and fangs out.

Cooper manages to scoop Blaine out of the dog’s reach, the little boy crying all over his shoulder, his small body wracked in sobs and wails in Cooper’s arms.

And if he makes amends, trying his best to repair what has been broken, it only makes him a better brother in the end.

Even if it leaves Blaine forever traumatized about skunks, of all things.

It boils down to “Bambi” being forbidden in the Anderson household, and to the Looney Tunes being checked before letting the cartoon run its course, lest Pepe Le Pew make an appearance.

Of course, as years go by, Blaine’s phobia recesses to the back of his mind–the lack of encounters with an actual skunk definitely helps, but then again, they are not living in the middle of the countryside–and he almost forgets about it.

Stripped animals still give him a shiver, but he doesn’t relate it to anything more than a healthy sense of self-preservation.

Kurt should be angry with himself for getting distracted. He really should be focusing on his school assignment instead of watching the people walking along the street outside of the coffee shop.

The sun is shining brightly and it’s one of the first truly warm days this year. On one hand he’s kind of upset that he has to work and can’t fully appreciate it. On the other hand, he just needed a few hours to relax after researching and outlining his project the previous day. He knows it’s his own fault that he’s stuck inside today but he needs to finish the assignment by tomorrow, so that he can focus on his work for Vogue during the weekend, without worrying about school.

At least he’s not stuck in the library.

Kurt sighs and with one last longing look outside, he turns back to his laptop and starts to work again.

It takes around an hour and a half before he can safely say that he’s finished. He probably needs to proofread it again but that’s something he can do later today. Now he just needs another coffee and maybe a piece of cheesecake.

He closes his laptop and takes a look around to check if it’s okay to leave it unattended for a few minutes. It’s not a particularly busy day in the coffee shop, so he takes the risk.

When he has his coffee and a piece of chocolate cheesecake, he turns around to go back to his table and stops short.

There’s something wrong with that morning’s delivery of roses. Kurt notices it almost immediately. Their scent is kind of wrong, and even though he hadn’t been working at Fantastique Florals for very long, he had become immediately familiar with the way each of the scents filled the small workspace. These roses don’t really smell at all. Scentless roses. They had provided them with scentless roses, when they should have been the most fragrant cuttings in the store.

“Hell,” he grumbles to himself as he makes his way to the back of the store, where they hold the receival records and where his boss is leaned over pages of accounts. “Marty, they delivered scentless roses.”

But Blaine is already a ghost, so that was a given. There’s one chapter that deals with Blaine’s death as a hate crime that happened 20 years ago. So if that bothers you, please stay safe and don’t read. This story also isn’t every Tina-friendly. But I have to add at this point that I just needed a villain and Tina in her vampire costume was the first thing that came to mind. I love her to bits and I hope nobody will hate me for making her evil.  Summary: Blaine Anderson is dead. He has been for years. Forced to haunt people’s dreams he meets Kurt Hummel and he finds himself drawn to the boy, to his hopes and his memories. But being in someone else’s head can be a dangerous thing because some nights are darker than others and eventually, all dreams must end. Author’s Note: When I saw this glorious piece of art, I had a vague idea that somehow took a life of its own. It was such a privilege for me to write for an artist who is so inspirational and kind and sweet all at once. I signed up for this, then quit writing. When I got the mail to sign up, I was reluctant, but I’m so, so glad I did it. Writing this story brought me a lot of joy and it gave me some of my spark back. I’m very grateful for that. I also need to thank Anna, who was my beta and cheerleader while I wrote. Another member of the cheerleading squad? Laura. You’re both amazing and I love you and thank you so much for your support.
