Regardless of how much or how little a freelance artist decides to set their commission prices at, they are in every right to do that.

If you feel an artist is charging too little for a commission, tip them!

If you feel an artist is charging too much, they’re not, but they’re out of your price range and you should not be spending money on luxury goods you cannot afford in the first place.

Every artist should be charging more for their work - but they do not for any number of personal, professional or financial reasons. That’s their individual decision - if they are comfortable bumping their price they will, in the interim, encourage tipping/them accepting tips.

There are also more and more artists that are beginning to charge more for their work, and they should - it’s a highly-valued luxury good. That is their individual decision - if you can’t afford it, that’s your problem, not the artist’s. They are charging according to a variety of wage standards, time, labor, media, tools and etc. to formulate their prices.

Art is a luxury good that requires specific specialized skill sets and prices set around hours creating unique custom digital or physical goods with expensive programs, devices, tools or mediums, tailored to client specifications. You are not entitled to cheaper prices and artists are not entitled to increase or decrease their rates at the whim of others.

If you do not want to pay for a luxury good, you are going to have to learn and invest in how to create it yourself instead.

As a side note, I can’t stress the tipping enough. A lot of artists won’t raise their prices for any number of personal, professional or financial reasons and that’s their business, so instead of telling them over and over to raise their prices, buy at the price you think is too low and then just tip them for their work.

Important information for Content Creators on Tumblr

okay i know ive posted alot about this just now, but now that ive got it more or less figured out I’m gonna make a better post here and include the tags relevent to my interactions in it to ensure no one else in my fandoms/communities are blindsided like i was. 

I encourage you to make your own, or to just recopy this, tagging the fandoms and communities important to you!

CONTENT CREATORS: TUMBLR IS HIDING YOUR POSTS!

If you make a post with external links, your post will be hidden from searches. If you make a post and link to your redbubble, no one can search for your post. If you make art and link it to your deviantart or artstation, no one can search for you post. If you make any post and just throw on a “hey here is where you find me!” no one can search that post. If you want to recommend a fic or a youtube video, no one can search your post, if you… hell you get the idea. Tumblr has completely shut down content creators on this hellsite and its fucking infuriating.

Edit:  I have just confirmed that the post type “Link” also does not show up in the tags. Thats right, there is an ENTIRE TYPE OF TUMBLR POST that cannot be searched. G-FUCKING-G TUMBLR.

WHAT TO DO?

It shuts down posts with external links, so at first i assumed internal links would be fine. and they are. if you make a page on your tumblr blog called like /links or something you can certainly link to that. But in that way you run into an issue, tumblr mobile is a piece of shit and cant load tumblr pages, and itll just take you back to the mainblog any time you try.

The best solution ive found so far is put all your relevent links in your blog description like so:

and then in every content post, call tumblr out for being a piece of shit and direct them to the links in your blog description.

Edit: In the top right hand side of photo posts you can click on it and include a single link as “source” that should work if you have one link neccessary. though if you need more you are still SOL.

CONTENT CREATOR SUPPORTERS

It is important now more than ever on this hellsite that you try to support your artist and content creators, reblog as much as possible, look to find them on websites off this piece of shit, and generally do your best to spread the word and support them, since tumblr itself is trying to silence them! 

Holy shit. Now I know why no one is commenting on my videos. I upload them to YouTube because tumblr won’t play them.

Glad other people notice that too! Made two posts about that issue on April this year. It is infuriating how bad Tumblr’s search engine is! 

thought it was odd that stuff i post gets only a handful of notes. good to know.

Dear Tumblr,

All those posts you see of young artists charging $3, $6, $10 for a drawing because they need help? That’s fucking exploitation, and fuck you if you think it’s reasonable or a “good deal" to pay nickels and dimes to squeeze a full-color original drawing out of some talented, hardworking kid because things are tight, and they can’t afford their textbooks. Or food. They sure as hell can’t afford to make you art for $6.

Instead, stop. And ask them where you can donate. If you can afford a $6 drawing, then you can afford to spend $6 simply to help someone. You don’t need internal organs as payment.

Don’t allow young artists to be exploited.

I’d go one step further and say: Offer to pay them decent Illustration wages instead if you still want a drawing, say around $20/hour. That way not only will you blow their socks off with your kindness and respect for their abilities, but you will also endow them with a sense of worth that they’re probably hurting for after being surrounded by the sort that makes them feel like their services are so worthless.

Illustration is a professional skill requiring years of training and dedication, regardless if there’s a school involved. If you enjoy that artist’s work and want to help them out, either donate like suggested above or else pay them what their work is worth and pass on the word.

Basically!

And if someone claims something that took you an hour to draw isn’t worth at least around $10 per hour of work, dont listen to their bullying. To the non-artist, its hard to see the worth in art especially if they didn’t put 10, 5, 2 or even 1 years of solid effort to get to the level of artistic ability there are today.

If the person complaining is still unhappy with the price despite that reasoning? Well let THEM make their own drawing themselves and spend the $10 elsewhere. GL to them getting the level of artistry you have without those years of experience they put behind them!

Honestly, I make designs for people for free, but someone offered me $20 for one once and I nearly cried.

Welcome to the Sterek ReverseBang challenge!

For those who aren’t familiar with this type of challenge, let’s first say what it entails. It’s a Big Bang type of writing and art challenge, but flipped around - instead of artists picking fics to create art for, it’s the artists who contribute art, and writers create stories inspired by it.

We’ll be looking for artists willing to create new pieces, made specifically for this challenge and for writers who like visual inspiration for their stories.

The basic rules can be found in the RULES post, but in short: artistic creations of multiple types are accepted, and fics will be required to be at least 4000 words long. In our SCHEDULE post, you can find the dates when the challenge starts and ends, for both artists and writers.

I can’t stress you enough about how important these exercises are for your drawing hand. You don’t wanna get CTS of Tendonitis and similar stuff that will prevent you from making art or even hold  a pencil.

Okay, this guy is my HERO. I just did these exercises as I watched the video, and already my arms and hands feel better. I have a degenerative tendon disease that prevents my muscles, tendons and ligaments from retaining their elasticity, and so anything that maintains the health of my bendy parts is important.

I URGE YOU. Even if you don’t draw, do these several times a day. Even just sitting at a computer can do serious damage. My dad, who was a rugby player, a carpenter, and now a handyman, suffered from severe carpal tunnel syndrome, simply as a result of sitting at the computer at the end of the day to play a little solitaire. Don’t let it happen to you!

Wow, these are REALLY helpful. And yes, this is not just good but IMPORTANT for more than artists — if you type a lot, play a lot of video games, do anything that requires lots of repetitive movements of your hands, wrists, and arms (gardening, sewing, factory work), these can help. Even if you don’t yet get pain these are a great preventative measure, because the damage builds up over time. Youth is no protection.

And like he says, you should feel a stretch, but don’t push it too far!
