Oh no, we know he’s straight, it’s on the record

this is hilarious

I had to go on fb and check this was real because I couldn’t believe he would be so myopic and stupid

I should know better by now

I knew it.

Can you imagine if this was the way he came out though? Like, arms spread, voice thundering to the heavens:  This day will go down in history. Look upon my gay profile picture, ye mighty, and tremble.

so when my fingers are really cold i can’t grip things with them, like trying to separate the opening of a plastic bag is so hard when my fingers are cold

why is this

It feels so nice to be useful! When you're cold, you experience vasoconstriction; decreased blood flow to your extremities. This causes muscle rigidity, and the cold causes your nerves to be less responsive. This all contributes to cold-induced clumsiness, which I am experiencing as I type this! One of my favourite examples of this phenomenon is when you drink a slurpee or eat a lot of ice cream and your tongue gets numb and you talk funny.

why do hard/sharp things hurt my feet and hands so much more when said extremities are cold

wtf, nerve endings, please explain me this thing

Perhaps I can shed light on this, as I am studying precisely this very thing at this very moment! I'm really not sure how much detail and jargon you want, so I'll try to keep this as layperson-accessible as possible.

First off: this is actually delving into a realm science doesn't understand too well at the moment. It's a really interesting problem and it's super complex! That being said, here's what recent studies suggest.

There's different kinds of cold receptors. Some just say "oh, this feels chilly!" while others say "OUCH AHH TOO COLD REMOVE HAND FROM ICE BLOCK NOW". It's the second type that's probably to blame. Basically, those pain receptors are always screaming at you by default. It's the effect of other, blocker receptors, that renders you pain-free in a normal state of delicious warmth. However, sometimes these blocker receptors get kicked out, letting your coldpain receptors shriek away. This normally happens when the temperature drops from "chilly but tolerable" to "this is so cold it  will cause damage if it continues". However, it's been shown that OTHER things can turn off the blocker receptors. It's quite possible that in a state of chilliness, your coldpain receptors are, for lack of a better term, primed to fire, and if something else happens to cause pain, like a jerk lego block, that severs the tenuous hold of the blocker receptors and the pain is compounded. So the overall effect is normal lego-in-foot ouch PLUS this-is-too-cold-for-health ouch.

I hope that made sense, if you want more details I can provide them. If it doesn't make sense, I can try to reformat that paragraph to be more accessible.

giveaway!

we are: a household of three non-binary autistic folks, two of whom have bpd, one of whom is schizophrenic, all of whom struggle with anxiety/depression stuff with all the trimmings.  we know brain weird, and we know how hard winter (and especially the holiday season) can be for people like us—cold dim days, noisy crowds everywhere, flashing lights, extra-busy retail jobs, dealing with relatives who don’t get it.  we’ve been there, and we want to help ease the passage into the new year with nice things.  that’s why we’re making self-care surprise kits to start 2015 off on a good note!

if you are: neurodivergent and/or mentally ill, especially if you’re those things and also trans and/or non-binary, reblog this post to enter our giveaway!  (if you simply want to boost this post for your followers to see, please tag accordingly so we know.)  be aware that if you win, you will need to give us a mailing address, so if it’s not okay to send a parcel to where you live/get your mail, we’d be happy to send it to a friend who can receive it for you!

self-care kits will include some or even all of the following:

  • a LUSH gift card
  • a bath & body works gift card
  • a handmade beaded bracelet with an uplifting message
  • a soft little plush friend you can keep in your pocket
  • an expertly-crafted chain maille stim/fidget toy

  • LUSH products such as lotion, bath bombs, soaps, etc
  • stickers
  • cute bandaids
  • a link to a little song written especially for the winners
  • other surprises!

giveaway ends january 1, 2015, when we will select four winners at random out of those who have reblogged this post.

even when you feel alone, there are people out there who understand what you’re going through.  your experiences are valid, your needs are important, you are believed, and you matter. ♥

(obligatory disclaimer: we are not associated with or endorsed by tumblr or any company in any official capacity, this is just giving presents to people we haven’t yet met.  if you are under the legal age of majority where you live, please consult a guardian before giving out your personal information.)

A Message to All Boys:

Wearing eyeliner doesn’t make you “girly” or “gay” a lot of girls actually find it attractive. If you wanna put concealer on that pimple go ahead. It doesn’t make you less of a man. Makeup is not intrinsically feminine. Don’t let society’s screwed up gender roles stop you from expressing yourself.

Makeup is for EVERYONE! :D

This website, funded by the National Autistic Society(who are supporters of neurodiversity btw) lets you download legitimate diagnostic tools for assessing ASDs in a clinical setting free of charge. It’s all open source. What this means is that your therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist can give you a legitimate diagnosis without paying 2000 dollars for the ADOS. Western Psychological Services owns copyrights to all the big name tests like ADOS and the ADI-R. Everytime their tests are used, royalties go to WPS. This is why diagnosis is so difficult to procure. NAS and ARC however are making it their mission to make diagnosis accessible to everyone. Other open source diagnostic tools include the RAADS-R, Stroop Test, and the QGAS(which has been scanned online in three pages here: 1, 2, 3, scoring sheet). All of these tests are used in diagnostic settings and they do not require special training DVDs. They are available for everyone! This means that those of you who think you may be on the spectrum but worry that you can’t afford diagnosis(or your doctor says it’s too expensive to diagnose you) there are several legitimate approved diagnostic tools that you can do yourself or link to your doctor or therapistso they may administer it for you. Other relevant test resources: Jean Ayres Sensory processing Disorder Checklist Rombergs Test(contains video for visual support) Aspie Quiz which is gaining scientific traction Memory and Cognition screening tests More: Video on Girls with Asperger’s – http://www.autismhangout.com/news-reports/feature-programs.asp?id2=123  Video on emotions and alexithymia in Autism -  http://www.autismsupportnetwork.com/news/video-dr-tony-attwood-autism-and-identifying-emotional-feelings-33993843  Video on Sensory Sensitivities (How we experience the world) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=plPNhooUUuc  Video on Sensory Overloads – http://vimeo.com/52193530 Again, if your doctor has trouble diagnosing you and you think you deserve a diagnosis, all of these tests have been either developed in and for clinical settings or are currently in the process of being proved useful for clinical settings. They are all free. Some you can do yourself. Others doctors can do with you without payment or test specific trainings. I have collected all of these links here in one post so you may link your doctor, counselor or therapist the full array of tests.
