I’m done living in a world where I don’t get to be who I am. I deserve a great love story, and I want someone to share it with.

He’s very close to her. Unfairly so. The broom in the supply closet is pressing into her back. They’re definitely going to get caught.

“I have a thing for you.” James says, softly. Even in the dark she can see his eyes moving all over her face, nervous. 

Lily works very hard on breathing. “Do you now.” Outside the closet she can hear Filtch yelling about what hooligans they are, how damaging school property is wrong, how they’re going to catch it. 

“Yeah.” 

“How bad?” It’s a good line, but her voice is shaking. 

“Pretty bad.” 

Filtch runs past outside again. She can hear James’ breathing, all shallow.  

“Well” she manages. She would say more but her voice isn’t doing what it’s told. She’s only up to his chin, for christ’s sake. She’s got goosebumps. It should be illegal, this. What he does to her. 

“Yeah” he breathes, “any thoughts on that?” 

Her heart is fucking pounding. He must be able to hear it. “A few” she breathes. His face is so close to hers, and oh god, oh god, she gets it now, all those songs. “That’s nice of you.” 

She hears him smile. “Nice of me? to have a fucking raging thing for you?” Mrs Norris is meowing outside the door. 

fucking raging thing for you “Yeah. Considerate, given the circumstances.” 

“What circumstances?” 

She swallows, breathes in. It’s so dark it’s like this isn’t even happening. It could be a dream. “My more than raging thing for you.” 

The breath goes out of him all at once. Filtch has heard the cat, he’s calling her name, telling her how good she is. Lily can’t think.

“You never said.” James’ voice is strangled. 

“Neither did you.” 

He is completely still. Filtch is close enough that she can hear his footsteps. No one says anything. Suddenly James’ breath is hot in her ear. He’s fully leaning over her, taller than she can believe, her space nothing but him and him and him. “When Filtch opens this door I’m going to kiss you.” 

She can feel every nerve in the places where he’s touching her, cheek againist her hair, lip on her earlobe. She was wrong before, this is the bit the songs are about. This is what it’s like to know you have a sure thing. “Cheers for the warning.” 

He grins againist her ear. “Anything for you.” 

She cannot think of a single thing to say. His voice is such a nice sound. Filtch opens the door.
