Today my friend @taniith and I made dairy-free ravioli!

Everything was done from scratch. We made the butternut squash filling, we made the tofu ricotta filling, we made the dough and rolled it through a pasta roller, we assembled them all, and we made the herb-butter sauce (using Earth Balance).

It was around 3 hours of work or so, but everything turned out fantastic. It’s really nice to have the time and the right tools to adapt a recipe to my allergies so I can have something I’ve never tasted before.

We made ravioli today, and it was awesome. (not shown - we made from-scratch non dairy milk and white chocolates) Second best part of visits from @catpella is having an excuse for dairy free food making adventures. :D

“Ah. Like a mix between an electronic device on the fritz and what I imagine a baby raptor sounds like. Got it!”

I see, so it speaks fluent power drill.

The alarm seems to be going on your small furry device.

even after reading the comments I was not prepared

Two Mysterium-related questions.

First, I seem to remember that there was some online space for attendees to find people to share a room with? Did I dream it up or does such a thing exist?

Second, is anyone staying in Salt Lake City for a day or two before or after the convention to visit… idk, whatever there is to visit there?

I’ll be there for extra days too! Not sure which extra days, but I’ll figure that out based on how long other people will be staying,

P.S.A ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL COSPLAYERS  This is why we cannot have nice things. (i took this from a post on facebook i saw someone put up that had to be shared elsewhere) “1: Broken Light Fixtures on a couple different floors. 2: Busted Exit Sign cause some fuckwad thought it would be A Good Idea to high-five it. 3: Actual fucking flooding in a room. 4: Punching a hole in the bathroom door and writing “One-Punch Man was here.” 5: Writing “Katsucon 2016” all over the stalls on the main floors.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THIS NEEDS TO STOP, THIS IS LITERALLY DISGUSTING.  This beautiful hotel is holding an events for cosplayers to enjoy time away and this is how you repay them? you wonder why they raise prices?. This is totally fucking immature and disgusting and the cosplayers that did this make our community look like shit  Spread this like wildfire, this is not okay stop destroying things.
Fun Fact: This shit kills small cons.
Our con got kicked out of it’s established space because the hotel kept getting trashed by drunk, rowdy con-goers. The last year they broke a fucking window, among other things.
Have fun at your cons. Have fun in your cosplay. But don’t be an asshole while you’re staying in a hotel. The shit is not cute, you ruin future cons for everyone. Part of the reason hotels spike their rates for smaller cons is because they expect con-goers to be disrespectful and destructive. Pricey rates drive people away from cons without a reputation. Those tiny cons don’t get a turnout because of hotel prices, they can’t collect revenue, they can’t afford the space, they wither up and die. No more tiny fun cons. Most of the staff volunteers and works hard to make your experience nice, and the hotels hold them responsible for the aftermath.
Just don’t be a dick, especially if you’re attending a small convention. It’s not hard.
FOR ANYONE WONDERING THE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES OF THIS, IT KILLS BIG CONS TOO. Youmacon started putting up their rules for no obstructive masks or face paint due to people needing to be IDENTIFIED AS THEY DESTROYED THE CON CENTER AND SURROUNDING HOTELS. ALA (Anime Los Angeles, a well known, huge, secure con) got moved to Ontario, CA, after 2015’s convention because so many people destroyed the Marriott that they said “fuck it, fuck you, we aren’t hosting this anymore.” It doesn’t just kill small cons, it kills the biggest, most well known conventions in the country. This is why larger cons, the hotel blocks are hundreds of dollars, nobody gets a discount anymore, nobody gets the “free CONtinental breakfast” that was super common when I started cosplaying in 2010. Because we, as a collective, destroyed these hotels. I’ve paid my fair share of fees due to ruined hotel towels, but I’ve had friends charged with destroyed chairs, tables, etc. etc. that they DIDN’T RUIN because of the fact the hotels have to find SOMEWHERE to get the money to FIX WHAT PEOPLE DID RUIN. Take care of your hotel rooms. Leave tips for the cleaning staff. Bring a big garbage bag to throw your cup noodles in, and bring your own towels if you think your paint/makeup might destroy hotel ones. Don’t throw massive room parties, bring a small pack of wet wipes and wipe down your makeup station every day, don’t be a jerk!!!!!!! Keep Cons Clean and Safe and Secure by not being a massive fucker!!!!!
If you’re staying in the con hotel you have a fucking responsibility to be a good representative of your con. This is why there are age limits on who can book a space. If you can’t behave like an adult, if you can’t trust your LAWL SO RANDOM XD enthusiasm to not result in property damage, then you don’t belong at a con. You aren’t fucking welcome.
Mysterium is not a cosplay con, and as far as I know, this kinda damage has never happened to us. But the reputation of cons as destructive and problematic is the kind of thing that could make prices awful for our small little con. So remember your etiquette!
Avatar
@catpella we haven’t had hotel *destruction*, but at least once we had a group of people decide to get high and be loud and obnoxious, pissing off an entire floor of hotel guests... which can piss off the hotel just the same.
After touching up the spots where the paint peeled, sanding the contact surfaces between the box and lid and letting the box sit open for three months; I can say that box 4 (My own personal gemedet set) is finally finished.  The box has sat closed and latched for several weeks and there is no sign of the paint sticking between the box and lid.
Okay Now I’m just having fun with my Big Fau and Big Duo figures.  My thoughts don’t like me right now so I’m trying to avoid them right now.  I’ve already constructed my roommates new desk and chair and I can’t do any more work on the gemedet project until I get a reply to the email I sent or save enough money to buy the five sheets of acrylic needed to produce the first batch of grids.  All this standing still is starting to get to me but these mecha of mass destruction have been very helpful.  Did I mention how much I love The Big O?  I should probably try to sleep again.
I sometimes wonder if people who prefer the Russell T Davies era ever actually watched it.
Wow a Moffat Stan choosing style over substance what a surprise.
“It’s not Shiny and Pretty so it’s bad!1!!11!”
What substance?
Love and Monsters: An episode about a group of people with complex backstories (losing children to drugs, having their mother killed when they were a child) who bond over the Doctor. Manipulated and killed. Subplot about Jackie Tyler dealing with never knowing when her daughter will be home, if she ever comes home, and the shit she has to put up with because of it.
      “Let me tell you something about those who get left behind. Because it’s hard. And that’s what you become, hard. But if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that I will never let her down. And I’ll protect them both until the end of my life. So whatever you want, I’m warning you, back off.”
It parallels Elton (who lost his mother) and even Bridget (who lost her daughter), who got involved with LINDA as a coping mechanism for being left behind.
It’s also got a great ending speech:
       ”you know, when you’re a kid, they tell you it’s all, grow up, get a job, get married, get a house, have a kid, and that’s it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It’s so much darker, and so much madder. And so much better.”
A message that RTDs Doctor tries to convey in almost every episode.
Frequently dismissed by people because “lol monster not scary”. Maybe if he was a stone angel with some pointy teeth…
Space Pig: Clearly not meant to be taken seriously. Designed to be obviously not an alien to the audience, to show the gullibility of humans and their tendency to overreact and act violently when faced with the unknown, as the soldiers did when they shot him to death when he clearly showed no threat. Also, meant as a DISTRACTION for the overreacting humans so that the real alien threat could put the world on red alert and they could get ahold of nuclear weapons.
Scribble: A product of an emotionally disturbed child from an abusive home where her only living family member refuses to give her closure of the abusive part of her childhood.
Slitheen: Skinned human beings and wore their pelt. Intended to use nuclear weapons to destroy the planet to sell for profit. A clear symbol for the destructiveness of corporate greed. But like “lol it fart and green so it bad”, right?
Lazarus: Tried to play god and delay the inevitability of aging and death. It resulted in him becoming quite literally a monster who’s fears and selfishness made him disregard other’s lives.
       ”It doesn’t work like that. Some people live more in twenty years than others do in eighty. It’s not the time that matters, it’s the person.”
Everything ends. That’s a common theme in Davies work. He’s informing us that death is inevitable but it doesn’t have to be horrible if we make the most of what we have.
Shrivelled Ten: The Master purposefully made the Doctor pathetic and weak to destroy the will of the people of earth. The Doctor is a symbol of hope, and if you weaken him then people give in to their fate.
Max Capricorn: He planned to wipe out London just to get revenge on members of the board. His inability to let go of his anger at the board is paralleled by his inability to let go of life, hence his existence as a cyborg at 200+ years of age. but “lol head on wheals, right?”
The Master: He’s completely physically unstable, because he planned his own resurrection as a means to escape the Doctor and cause the Doctor grief. His physical instability is just a visual manifestation of his emotional/mental instability. It’s symbolism Davies uses to get his point to the audience.
Chloe Webber: Already addressed this a bit, but I’ll continue. Chloe was being possessed by another child who she felt kinship to, because she literally had no one. She had no way to communicate to other children because of the emotional distress her father caused, and her mother also had emotional distress which caused her to not be able to communicate with Chloe about her father. The means the Isolus uses to get to Chloe is hardly relevant when you put it into the perspective of WHY she targetted Chloe.
Tinkerten: This is admittedly a Deus Ex Machina, but it’s a decently executed one, because the story arc is intended to take a backseat to character and emotional one. From a narrative perspective, Martha’s journey is less about finding a solution to the Master and more about her coming in to her own person. Furthermore, the God Symbolism is used for a reason, so it can be deconstructed (as RTD tends to do), as the minute he survives, he’s punished for his hubris. His self-righteousness (forgiving the master) leads to the Master deciding to leave him alone in the universe, and later leads to Martha leaving, as he caused a HUGE rift in her family life.
RTD knew he was writing a kids show. He took serious stories and complex emotional arcs, and buried then under sixty feet of silly to get them accross to the young audience, as he should. Moffat, however, takes silly nonsensical stories and shallow emotional “arcs”, changes the chronological order, ads some scary monsters and flowery speeches, and thinks himself mature.
I read somewhere that RTD’s Doctor Who was a serious show pretending to be silly, and Moffat’s was a silly show pretending to be serious, and I think this all explains it well, and you’re a perfect example of the people who buy into it.
Now, tell me again why I shouldn’t prefer RTD to Moffat?
a couple things... first: do you know the timeline of the Myst series, i know it goes straight from Myst to Riven but that's about it. second: it's really a dick move that as soon as the player finishes Myst Atrus is just like 'well you seem p good at solving puzzles, go save my wife and essentially kill my dad, k?' finally: are the beetles and trees used to make linking books/ ages in Riven the only type usable or were they just making due with what they had?
Avatar
OvO ! ! !
I’m not sure if you mean the order of the games or the unfolding of the plot in order of events between games. Either way, I do know the timeline!
Without going into spoilers, a (very) little bit happens between Myst and Riven (like.. A day.), then there’s a good while between Riven and Exile (at least two years I’d say), then you’ve got a big chunk between Exile and Revelation that’s gotta be around ten or twelve years. THEN between Revelation and End of Ages it’s fukkin… Yooo.. A long while. Like a long, long time. At least like 50 years if not 70, if not a hundred or more. Dang. Uru, I believe, based on additions made in Myst Online, is shortly after the events of EoA. If not within a few years (2-5?) then within.. I’m thinking a decade or two at most. That one I’m much less sure on.It’s not as specific as I would like, but that’s what I have at the moment.
Other Myst’ies are welcome to add in references here if they have info about the relative time between installations. From what I recall I don’t think there’s any in-game mention of how much time has passed between anything; I go off the ages of characters. (Except maybe something in Atrus’ journal in Riven I feel might have said something that I don’t recall. Or other journals in EoA even? I should replay the series again. For the like 20th time.)
In case this turns into a discussion as it often does in this fandom (here.
There is a precise conversion algorhythm for the dates in Atrus’ journals! So all the games have clear dates, down to the day they started (or ended, in Myst 1′s case), but listing them would be a huge spoiler, as you point out. There is a delightful pdf with the complete timeline!
Riven takes place a couple of weeks after Myst 1, crossing a new year
Exile takes place 8 years after Riven
Revelation takes place 9 years after Exile
Uru ABM comes before EoA! This is very important. For all intents and purposes, EoA is Uru’s third expansion pack, except it’s a videogame in-universe. MOUL and MOULa are the only parts of Uru that come after EoA. …which is a good introduction to the general concept of ‘it was all enough of a hot mess before, and then came Uru’. But…
as it was originally conceived, Uru’s in-game present time starts 179 years after Revelation.
End of Ages is a side story that takes place 2 years after that (more like one year according to my calculations but I know I’m in the minority)
The first book is Myst+Riven’s direct prelude, the second book goes back two generations, the third book is set between Riven and Exile. … …….. …that one bit of audio that was released on Friday, should you want to count it as canon (and why wouldn’t you, it’s adorable *^*) is set somewhere in the six years following Revelation :]]]
Avatar
I would like to clarify that *some* of that audio (which is totally canon, for realzies >.>) is from sometime between the third book and Revelation, though it is unclear just where it falls
