The black and white montage tribute to scully and Mulder's relationship at the start of trust no 1 feels like a fever dream. The voice over of her calling Mulder her perfect other, her perfect opposite. The myriad photos of them staring deeply into each other's eyes. The melancholy romantic piano in the background. The lingering shots of their millennium kiss. A freeze frame of the momento mori hospital moment. What do you mean they really did that

oof, I remember that, and for some reason it made me, an obsessed 14 year old shipper, so mad that I turned off the episode and didn't watch again until the one with Burt Reynolds. I don't even now completely understand my reaction, I guess it was the emotional whiplash and the manipulation of it, while knowing how long the show had been denying they'd been anything been platonic and knowing that Mulder wasn't supposed to be in the last season at all. it was like "why are you doing this now, when everything's already ruined??" And also the, like you say, fever dream tonal incompatibility of it probably didn't soften the blow lol
