The Archer and The Moon

Taylor Swift's video for The Archer contains a lot of symbolism connected to the moon. Lyrically also, but I'll be making an in-depth post about the lyrics soon. So, let's begin with that rolling background...

It conjures a billowing rocket launch, ready to shoot into the sky, the swiftest of arrows...

The Archer was released during the same week as the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The video for the track ends after the song, specifically at 3:39... Exactly the same time Neil Armstrong made one small step onto the moon.

Too much of a leap? Ok. Well, the Apollo missions are named after the Greek God Apollo - God of the Sun. Yes THE SUN, Kaylor friends. His twin sister Artemis is the Goddess of the Moon. As stated by Wikipedia, "her symbol is widely noted as a bow and arrow."

She is an archer. So is the constellation for Sagittarius. Taylor's star-sign.

The name of Sagittarius' centaur is Chiron - I'll just leave his symbol here... Nothing to see...

Cute. But why this sudden fascination with the moon? Taylor will be starring in Cats later this year. A tale based on a story first published in 1939. 50 years before she was born. This clip was shared just a few days before The Archer was launched...

Yes, that's Taylor. On the moon. Apparently cats can breathe up there but regular humans need a helmet. Could the reflections we see throughout The Archer be bouncing off a visor?

One point on the lyrics. She sings "dark side, I search for your dark side". Famously, it is impossible to see the far or "dark side of the moon" (the cover of the Pink Floyd album by the same name is worth googling btw). Could she be contemplating the moon here too?

Lunacy? You'd be right, right, right, right.

OUT NOW!! after she’d spent all of rep era talking about being seen for who she truly is and even made the concept of invisibility fully literal in the delicate video in case her saying it in words in the rep prologue wasn’t clear enough for people… after she confirmed that delicate was for the gays and even brought back invisible.mp3 from her fucking debut album as a secret song and made a speech explicitly connecting invisibility with being closeted and coming out. and now the whole bridge and emotional climax of her most emotional and intensely personal song yet is her just repeating “they see right through me can you see right through me i see right through me” over and over… y’all……

“I got the call two days before we actually shot the video. They saw my Nicki Minaj look on the show, so they thought I’d be great for her. I had to go pick someone to make the outfit, I had to make the hair within a day. There are some celebrities that you grow to love because of their entertainment value. I grew to love Taylor because of who she is as a person. She was so kind and she was the homegirl next door. She came backstage to us and make sure we were all comfortable. She wanted to make sure we all had champagne, wanted to know who we are and what we do. That day was absolutely amazing. [If she asked Taylor to appear as a judge on Drag Race] Now you should know better than that. I definitely told her that. Nope. No. You’re wrong. Color photos have been around since the late 1800s there are a bunch of full color photos of MLK. The us govt and educational system just doesn’t show us because they want us to push back the civil rights movement and distance institutionalized racism from today’s society.

Here are just a few of many photos of MLK in FULL color. This wasn’t that long ago. This is RECENT history. Segregation, the terrorizing of black communities, the brutality isn’t old - it is still present.

When my dad was a little boy, my grandfather was one of the ministers who marched with MLK on Washington. He grew up hearing stories about the great Dr. king and the differences he made BUT he still saw the blatant discrimination against black folks and other people of color (hell he experienced it himself). My dad was a kid watching MLK. My DAD. My grandfather who only passed away about six years ago MARCHED with him. This isn’t twelve generations ago. THIS IS RECENT HISTORY.

Seeing photos like this in full color with nice, crisp lines and in relatively high definition really does a lot to remind you that this really WASN’T all that long ago. No wonder people tend to think of the days of MLK as ancient history, if we mostly see black and white and grainy pictures!
