quiet and unimposing, the green beast pushes aside long locks to place a kiss at the back of his rival’s neck.

he can’t say he expected that.

but lee’s never been predictable and it isn’t something he would change. he catches his hand, to prevent any possible retreats.

       ❛ sleep well? ❜

❛ Yeah Lee, not train – you know like taking a rest day. ❜
And maybe he had a point with Suna, but then again Suna was DRY and hot, not this humid hell that they seem to have landed in. Here wasn’t a lot that made her turn her back on their daily training regimen …. but this was too much even for her.
❛ I mean, keeping in shape is a good thing and all, but giving your body rest is also important! Right, Neji? ❜
lee is smart, contrary to popular belief; he knows what rest day means. but he still likes to play it off that the words aren’t in his vocabulary, “i do not know the meaning of the words ‘rest day’, tenten!” fists fly again.
Image
he speaks between solid ‘thunks’ to the wooden post, “it is still very early in the day!” he exclaims. only being out here an hour is hardy close to their usual training regime. he might feel a bit sticky and light-headed, but that was no reason to give up on a goal!
“we cannot…give up…nuuh-whoops he got a little woozy. legs wobble and he veers to the right. what was that you were saying about heat, tenten?

he can see it coming a mile away. literally.

thankfully he’s only a few yards away, perched on the next perch over, so when lee begins to waver, neji catches him faster than a blink. he hasn’t toppled over, per se, but the hyuuga supports him at arm’s length, palm pressed flat against his shoulder.

that same hand moves upward, pinching lee’s ear fiercely for all of three seconds before letting go, pointing at a shady tree.

❛ this has nothing to do with giving up and everything to do with not being an idiot. now go sit. ❜ wow neji, way to not follow tenten’s example.

❛ Can we just not train in the humidity – just this once? ❜

The end of summer was always brutal; the hottest time of the year, with added moisture did not make for a happy weapons expert.

                              ❛ I mean … don’t you two just feel …. sluggish? ❜

        “not train?

the look on lee’s face makes you think you just insulted him personally. he’s sweating like the rest of them, but he’s still wailing on a post, glistening in the sun with youthful gusto (and maybe a little bo.)

Image

“certainly it is hot, but as long as we stay hydrated, we can get in some good weather training! what if we are to have a mission in suna? stranded in the desert seems like it would be worse than this!”

unsurprisingly, he was in complete agreement with the kunoichi.

for a so-called genius, even he suffered from lapses in better judgment, at least in the terms of fashion. while comfortable and physically efficient, the clothing he wore was less than ideal against the actual weight of sweat.

             ❛ definitely. lee, let’s call it a day. ❜

however you view Neji & Tenten’s relationship in canon ( and even though they were filler episodes ), episodes 427 & 428 revealed that Tenten holds a great respect for Neji. His opinion and thoughts matter to her; his acceptance of her matters to her.
In the beginning of her dream, she’s resisting everything being thrown at her. She’s fully aware that she was on the battlefield moments before. She even states ( to herself anyway ) that Neji is dead and seeing him standing right there ( along with the way he was acting ) was not only out of character for him, but also impossible. She knows that this is not her world, knows that these people are not her friends and just like anything she throws herself into, she switches into “ logic mode “, trying her hardest to figure out why things are the way they are. Even someone comments saying “ she’s in war mode, nothing can stop her “.
Except her team, but especially Neji.
Because yes, her desire is to be recognized – to be the hero and save everyone – but even with everyone applauding her in the end, its not until Neji touches her shoulder and tells her “ its ok, you saved me “ that she gives in.
                                           you saved me
That is the core of her grief with his loss; its always been her job to have her team’s backs and cover them from a distance. This time though, she didn’t have Neji’s back and look what happened – she lost him forever.
Because she respects him and loves him ( platonic or romantic ), to be validated and know that she saved him in this world ….. is overwhelming. By giving in she can stay here, because her team is whole; her family is together with no need to shed tears or learn how to move on without one of them by her side.
Here she can be happy and not cry.
To wake up means facing his ghost again, to see Lee just as broken up as she is, to see Gai in that wheelchair having almost killed himself to save them. All the while she couldn’t do anything to protect the ones most precious to her.
And that is why, having Neji stand there and tell her its ok, is enough to push her past resistance – even though logically she knows better. Neji was her grounding point and when that grounding point tells you to let down your guard and open up to them … well how could she deny that.
