For a long while I wasn’t taking photos. Life got in the way, full time work and responsibilities took over. My camera was left on a shelf untouched for a good year or so after I’d got my degree. Lockdown and being made redundant has made me realise that life is too short to not do the things that make you happiest. If there is something you absolutely adore but haven’t done for a while, or maybe you’ve never done it, go for it! Life is incredibly short and we don’t have time to sit and debate whether we should.

My two images that I selected to be put into our end of first year show. We had 11 people in our group all creating a set of images to be shown in a gallery style space at university. Please find below our gallery statement to better understand our concept and themes

Meraki (n.) Greek origin

The soul, creativity or love put into something. The essence of yourself that is put into your work.

Within this collection, you are able to see that the images focus around the nature of the coast as this is the area in which the artists are based or it is the area in which they live.

Each piece of work is based on something unique to the artist as it focuses on a subject of interest or has a personal importance to them.  Every image in the collection has been manipulated in some way to create the desired concept. This allows the artists to show a unique and abstract view on coastal areas that others may not normally see.

The images that deal with themes such as, time, memory, place and the smaller details that make up the coast. The images within this exhibition have a range of origins, which include; found images and collating those together or using a variety of media to create a colourful and manipulated view on the world. Each artist has created images or an image that showcases their ideas and how they perceive the coast.

Incorporating sound and physical objects is a component of this exhibition that allows the viewer to feel as though they are in the environment. Being immersed in the coastal environment allows them to see the images in a new and rare perspective, without having to physically be at the coast.
