I am not back on Tumblr but I am driving by to post a link to how I spent my last week’s recreation, stuck in my apartment while sick and reading COVID news (i.e. a rerun of my personal March 2020 experience):

Greg Hirsch/Tom Wambsgans  |  11k

“Your takeout gave me horrible acid reflux,” Tom told him as he swallowed the Advil.
“I don’t know, I think it might have been all the alcohol,” Greg said, and then collapsed back onto the bed.
“Is this your plan for the day?” Tom asked. “Lying around in my bed, doing nothing?”
“Pretty much,” Greg said. “What, do you have a hot date?”

I wish you all good health and safety as this cursed year comes to a close. You can always find me on Twitter or yammering on about movies on the podcast.

This week, Morgan and Gavia discuss Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 mystery Rear Window, starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. They break down Stewart and Kelly’s star power, dig into some classic feminist film theory, praise the film’s iconic costumes, and more.

You can support us on Patreon here, where you can find, among other things, a recent minisode where we discuss what we’ve been reading and watching while cooped up at home. We are especially grateful for your generosity at this uncertain time and hope you are all staying as safe and well as possible.

Previous episodes: Episode 83: Psycho

This was a fun episode to record -- old Hollywood, film theory, quarantine! I hope my extremely basic explanation of Laura Mulvey made sense and that you guys are all holding up out there.

Anonymous asked:

Saw on Twitter you were looking for something to write a blog about — what about Jane Eyre?

Thank you so much for the suggestion! A couple other people requested this as well. For context, I am writing blog posts about all manner of topics on the Overinvested Podcast Patreon while we are all stuck in quarantine -- if you have a suggestion, please do let me know. This one took me a while because Jane Eyre is such a complex book and I kept trying to approach it from different angles, but you can read the result here.

We’ll be back with a new episode on The Departed very shortly, and next week we’ll be discussing Rear Window, a movie about James Stewart not leaving his apartment. We had actually been discussing that as a possibility from early in the year and now... it’s timely!

Stay well out there everybody.

Harry Potter | Remus Lupin/Sirius Black | 28,000 words

“What had you and Lily so worked up earlier?”
“Only my childhood traumas,” Sirius said lightly. “Did you know, if you pick a memory from when you’re really little, you remember everything at scale? My mum looked like a giant, and she’s bad enough at her regular size.”
“Why on earth,” asked Remus, whose eyes were still closed, “would you pick one of those memories to wander about in?”
“We were experimenting,” said Sirius, “with subjectivity. Turns out Professor Whatsits was quite misleading today, unless the whole point was to see who caught on.”

Hello, Tumblr. Everything is a nightmare. I have not left my apartment in over a week. Instead I have written, of all things, a Harry Potter fic. It’s all about memory and subjectivity and The Nature of the Self. Multi-era. Much misery. Some hope! Please enjoy.

This week, Morgan and Gavia discuss the second installment of Philip Pullman’s follow-up trilogy to His Dark Materials, The Secret Commonwealth, which finds Lyra Silvertongue studying at Oxford as a young adult. They discuss the novel’s relationship to the earlier books, Pullman’s new ideas about daemons, and second-book-in-a-trilogy problems.

this book is a fascinating sequel in many ways, especially the new daemon worldbuilding, and the way it depicts the spread of authoritarian power across Lyra’s world. it rly emphasizes the link between the original trilogy’s celebration of truth-telling and storytelling, and the way fascism intentionally undermines the basic concept of truth:

but also! morgan & i both had some major issues with that one ~particular romantic arc in this book! so let’s just say we had a lot to discuss here.

This month on Patreon, we’re discussing Little Women! To kick things off, Morgan wrote about the book’s literary context and structure. Coming soon: gender! romance! capital times!

I’m halfway through my reread of this book now and... it may kill me. Can you believe that the women of the world have spent centuries obsessing over the book with, perhaps, the worst ending in all of literature? We are gluttons for punishment.

It is really wonderful though.
