Gallery Jamboree 2023

so we all agree that art is no longer being circulated on tumblr the way it used to be, and that The Youths no longer know how to reblog shit because they’re from insta-tok or whatever, and that subject-specific tags are turning into a unusable slog because so much shit gets inappropriate hashtags. and that shit is getting pretty dire.

[image id: a hand drowning in crumpled paper, holding a sign that says “help”]

i’ve been thinking about it and i have a proposal:

WE NEED MORE GALLERY SPACES.

[image id: a fancy art gallery with red brocade wallpaper, gold picture frames, and beautiful oil paintings]

who benefits from galleries? artists benefit because their work is shown in a space that’s already attended by an expectant audience. the audience benefits because they can follow a space with the expectation of being served the curated content they want to see. and crucially, people who want to participate in creative work without having to make it themselves can become the curators who help connect artists with audiences.

[image id: a mule-drawn tour bus about to set out on an educational ride]

i propose this summer, with school letting out and a lot of bored young people ready to particpate in fandoms and other hobbies, that we start a push to make more fanblogs with the explicit, understood purpose of serving the community more gallery spaces. artists will get more exposure and fans will get to see more art.

[image id: a wall mural featuring a large hand pulling back a blank curtain to reveal a dense and complex design of overlapping words and tags. a sunbeam illuminates a bright triangle of wall that reads “hey”]

being a curator is a really fun and really valuable way to engage with your community, whether that’s the fans of a show, hobby, game, science, genre. it really can’t be overstated how cool it is to be one of the guys who find and reblog artists with limited reach and thus introduce them to a wider audience that will be happy to see something great.

THIS SUMMER, START A GALLERY SIDEBLOG AND SEE HOW IT GOES. TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO START GALLERIES. ADVERTISE IT IN THE TAGS. ADVERTISE YOUR FRIENDS. PUT OUT CALLS FOR WORK. RUN IT FOR A WEEK OR A SEASON OR TEN YEARS. FOLLOW OTHER GALLERIES. LET’S SEE IF WE CAN MAKE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.

Look, this is probably going to end up as an unpopular post, because God knows the level of brainrot capitalism and fast consumption caused in people's brains, but I'd rather not get TV shows for a while if it means writers get their rights defended and recognized.

Been a bit since I posted about Irene. She’s recently gone from reluctant vigilante to full-on revolutionary, especially after we “accidentally” “kidnapped” a “princess” just recently. Irene can also now teleport in a puff of brimstone and (sort of) turn into a dragon, so that’s fun.

Her new wardrobe is swiped from an ancient rail-city, so I’m veering kind of medieval. She can now pass as a roguish revolutionary knight who knows what she’s doing, until you get to know her and realize she’s still a dorky accountant.

I have to hear more about how she can ‘sort of’ turn into a dragon. :D

One of her new powers involves channeling aspects of her Dragon Engine’s draconic nature. She can embody dragon features for their effects (better vision, fireproof skin, even flight) but only one at a time. So could turn into a whole dragon… but sequentially, not all at once.

Diegetically, she’s figuring out her new powers as she goes, and has only managed to do the Eyes of the Dragon transformation thus far. I’m sure her first time trying on wings will be… majestic.

The Bleeding Lily Crowned in Shackles is an Abyssal and a chivalric queen of her domain - one granted to her in death by the Mask of Winters. While she owes the deathlord for her unlife, she walks a path of honor. I think she's a great example of a heroic Abyssal.

Her write up is extremely economical with wordcount, establishing a strong backstory and personality as well as a heathstone, manse, and artifact.

My second spooky sapphic goth GF for Adversaries! Though, you missed a word in her write-up: the ominous whispering voice from her backstory was not the Mask. I left who it was intentionally vague, to slot in whoever best suits your campaign.

I’m glad you found her write-up both dense and useable. I wrote Bleeding Lily on a relatively tight deadline, but with a really great prompt and a lot of freedom. Like a lot of the characters I wrote for Adversaries, I hope she ends up as the villain you can’t help but love for at least a few groups :)

(Also, I think Truth of the Grave may be the best charm I’ve written for Exalted. At least, I think it’s neat.)

Speaking of cats, here’s my little criminal. Her favourite activity is taking my stuff, especially craft supplies, and hiding them. Bonus features include great mrrps and a fun-sized paintbrush tail (she lost the tip to frostbite as a feral, before getting rescued and adopted). She is very sweet and also very good at murdering and I love her.

My current evening routine involves my girlfriend reading an October Daye book and telling me what nonsense Toby is getting up to (she's just starting Chimes at Midnight, I'm nearly current with the series and excited for her to catch up) while I browse tumblr and send her cats you've posted or reblogged. Just wanted to say thanks for both the stories and the cats.

Toby is very bid on getting into nonsense. It's sort of her calling, really.

Yay cats! (Please do not send me cats, my inbox remains a rescue facility and we're out of kennels.)

This, of course, is why we both love Toby. Getting regular updates along the lines of “Toby, no!” while she reads is great, since that was usually my exact reaction while reading. Biting my tongue on spoilers, that’s the hard part...

(I shall keep my cat corralled on my own blog. You seem to have plenty and mine is too full of crimes for me to, in good faith, impose her on someone else’s inbox).

Jovena Oreia is a powerful ghost possessing the wreck of an artifact ship seeking revenge against the living. She's a pretty classic ghost-ship story. I do we the book give us a little bit more about her personal story, but suspect it's left intentionally open so the Storyteller can more easily fit her into their game.

My girl! Well, one of them, but a personal favourite. TBH the main reasons you don't get much about her personal story is a) I needed the wordcount to give her more cool sail powers and ghost story hooks, and b) I wanted her to be a really archetypal ghost, the Vengeful Bride(tm), so I had to paint her in pretty broad strokes.

In my head, she was a particularly beautiful woman from a modest family, engaged (basically sold off) to a wealthy Coral captain for her looks. He had her killed on their wedding night for nebulous reasons that made him look good and/or helped him against an enemy, a la Princess Bride. The "more than close" relationship she has with her ghost ship is romantic, though rather star-crossed because both of them are dead, one of them is a boat, and they kind of fuel each-others' anger in a less than healthy way.

(Did I write two spooky sapphic goth GFs for the Adversaries book? Maaaybeee...)

My main goal with including her was to provide an interesting Sail-based encounter that could challenge even an Exalted captain, since I found those rather lacking in the base game. She's patient, good at running away, and motivated (via her binding ritual) to keep chasing a player character, so she can come after you again and again. Her tragic backstory and hatred of her binding ritual are meant to give players some nonviolent options for handling her, or orchestrating an enemy-of-my-enemy situation.

Those are just my thoughts on Jovena, ofc the whole point of the Adversaries book is giving people character ideas they can tweak and change to fit their own games. Hope she brings some groups a lot of cool scenes and a chance or three to incorporate the Pirates of the Carribean soundtrack into their Exalted sessions.

Unrelenting Aton is an apocalypse prepper, who happens to be a 60ft tall earth elemental. He rules the Last Bastion, an underground city of 10,000 built to survive the end of the world. The cult sends agents out to gather resources, recruit important members, and track pending world-ending disasters.

Aton used to be responsible for holding down earthquakes, and his old boss would really like for him to come back and do his job.

Look, not to wade too deep into @mcytblrsexymen campaigning, but it's been my understanding that the traditional, Platonic Tumblr Sexyman possesses the following traits:

1) Canonically depicted as non-human, or in some way that leaves appearance open to interpretation (audio-only, highly simplified design). 2) Widely depicted in fan media as a tall twink-y white boy wearing a suit. 3) Canonically depicted, at least once, as evil, mischievous, or chaotic, but in a way that is ultimately non-threatening (cartoonish, redeemable, or inept in their evilness). 4) Attractive voice, ideally with posh British accent. 5) Canonically depicted, at least once, as a little pathetic.

Now definitions do change, and vote with your heart and all that, but I think we as a community need to take a good hard look at the facts:
