I’m fine, I’m fine, it’s totally cool that the last galdor (spoken charm particularly used, under various names, in the Dark Ages in the European North Atlantic) Gandalf lays down is “You cannot pass.” And that the SECOND to last galdor Gandalf lays down is to protect the abandoned Bill the Pony.

“Go with words of guard and guiding on you” what if everything mattered! What if Bill the Pony mattered!

Bill the Pony, whose life sucked at Bree and who has gotten Weird Smart but is still just a random pony from Bree, gets nearly the same level of protection from Gandalf here as Frodo and co. do from Tom Bombadil, the master of laying word-magic on anything or anyone. The only reason it’s “nearly” is bc in addition to his own words of guard and guiding, Frodo is also taught to recite a poem that will summon help (Bombadil) in his hour of need. And Bill the Pony cannot talk.
