❝I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. ❞

Matt sighed quietly and shook his head. He didn’t move away, but he turned his head, so he could look up at her. “And how? You’ve seen the length grandfather was willing to go through. He killed a person that had nothing to do with all this. All because he wanted me to be the perfect heir.”

Burying his face back in her shoulder, he hugged her a little more. “There is no way he will just let me go. No matter who much I beg him. In the past few weeks he’s forced me to marry someone, threatened me, beat me and the list goes on..”

Dara chuckled, unintentionally that is. "I know, but don't underestimate me, baby brother." With the way that Matt is clinging on to her, it is by Dara's instincts to save her brother out of his misery.

If she had known his situation a bit earlier, she would've been on her feet despite being in the middle of breastfeeding Yamato. But knowing Matt, even if she'd cling in touch with him, he would probably say "It's nothing sis, I'm fine. Tell Jun I said hi and congrats on your baby." Then they'd hang up and that would be it. Lately, Dara had lost her touch with charming her brother, as he spiraled down into depression. all thanks to her. In a way, Dara hated her, and had blamed her for everything. In a way, she wished she was the one who had pulled the trigger and watch as the life leave her body. But she also didn't want hurt Matt.

She pulled back and cupped his face. "I will be thinking of a way, but I know I can slipped you to Japan. Jun and I are planning on staying there, while Yamato's young anyway." she smiled at him and wiped the tear off his cheeks.

There was in inner conflict raging inside of Matt. On one side, he wanted to push Dara away and tell her to leave him alone. He was too old, too proud and should be everything, but weak.

Yet, here he was. Weak, vulnerable, broken and defenseless. As if he was six years old again.

So slowly, he loosened the grip around his own legs, before letting go entirely and wrapping his arms around Dara instead. At the same time, he buried his face into her shoulder and bit back the flood of emotion he could feel boiling up. “I can’t do this anymore, sis. I can’t live this life anymore. It’s too much. This can’t be all I’m living for.”

Feeling his arms tighten their grip on her, as if he's begging her to save his life, gave Dara the feeling of finally accomplishing her purpose. This wasn't the first time that she has seen Matt this helpless; it was actually the second time. The first was when he was a kid.

She ran her hands through his hair and carress them lovingly, hoping that with every slow strokes, she'd be able to ease away his pain. But she knows that these are temporary comfort only. She's still dead and that's because of him. That's because he stood up for himself, for what he believes in. She can't let him stay in this environment. Not in this room, or this house, that reminded him of why she died.

"I will get you out of here" she finally said. Gripping her brother tightly "I promise you that."

If his body hadn’t felt so heavy, Matt would’ve gotten up and put distance between himself and Dara. Not necessarily because of what he was feeling (or the lack thereof), but because being physically close to someone while he was feeling emotionally distressed made him feel uneasy and uncomfortable. Being on his own with plenty of space around him, on the other hand, made him feel more balanced.

Kind of ironic, given how affectionate he had been as a child. Especially with Dara.

Her words though, made him ball his hands into fists, while his eyes stubbornly stared at the wall in front of him. “What is that going to change?” Matt tried to keep his voice steady, but he couldn’t help it and his voice cracked nonetheless. “Forced marriage, or not. It doesn’t matter. What’s happened, happened. She dead, killed. And it’s all my fault. Because I wanted my freedom, instead of obeying and becoming what I’m supposed to be. Might as well pull through with it now, it doesn’t matter anymore. My life was never my own anyway.”

Despite the lack of distance, Dara can strongly a thick wall between her and Matt. The last time that she reached out to him and pull him in her arms, he had pushed her away. If anyone has done that to Dara, she wouldn't mind; she would feel hurt, but it would hurt as much as it did to Matt. He was her baby brother, hers to protect and to love. And yet, she has done anything /but/ that.

"Oh Matt..." she wanted to tell him he was wrong, but what was the truth then? He's the heir to the clan, his life has been planned out to him. He loved a girl, and when she had find her duties more important, he breakdown like how humans do. And yet, this is what he got for letting himself feel, letting himself be weak, letting himself be normal.

Dara reached out and placed her hand on Matt's, rubbing her thumb against his skin before finally pulling him into her arms.

Her words.. If Matt hadn’t been so exhausted and mentally defeated, he probably would’ve snapped. He probably would have brought up all his defenses and sarcasm as a weapon. Because that was the only thing he was good at - hiding behind sky high walls of sarcasm and bitterness.

“I’m surprised you’ve heard about it at all,” he then finally muttered, while pulling his legs close and wrapping his arms around them, so he could hide his face in between them.

“Haven’t seen you in months after all.” Which wasn’t even an exaggeration. The last time he had seen Dara had been shortly after the birth of her son, his nephew. After a scarce visit in the hospital, Matt had gone back to shutting himself away. And even though he knew Dara must’ve been busy with her newborn, Matt couldn’t help, but to be bitter about her not bothering to drop by even a single time. The fact that it could’ve been partly his own fault, didn’t cross his mind. But he was good in shutting people out and not letting them in. Especially after what had happened and he had decided not to feel anything anymore, for anyone.

“But I’m alright. I’m fine.”

It's not going well. Dara thought. She bit on her lips, guilty of his words and of all the unsaid accusations. He was going through his dark times, and she had to be with him, but she did't. She let him go. Though that was partially Matt's fault, as Dara tried again and again to reach out to him, only to be pushed away. There's nothing more painful than trying your best to help someone, show them that you care and still not be enough.

"I know." she said in a low voice. A pang of bitterness hit her, but this is not the time to fight back. "You're not." a frown formed on Dara's face "Mom and Dad are talking to grandpa right now. It's become a heated comversation and they don't want me to be involved in it" she snorted and shook her head. "They're convincing him not to push through the wedding."

Not too long after Dara had left, Matt woke back up, unable to sleep for longer than just a couple of hours. He was exhausted and he was tired. His whole body felt so heavy, that he didn’t feel like moving even the tiniest bit.

If it had been up to him, Matt would’ve just stayed the way he had been. But Vic had admitted that she needed to move, since her position was getting uncomfortable and was Matt too embarrassed to ask her not to leave his side.

So in the end, she had gotten up to stretch her legs, while Matt just laid back down, for some reason feeling lonelier than he had ever felt before, even though she was still there.

Then, she told him about Dara. And for a few moments, he was torn between anger and the strong feeling of wanting to see her. In the end, he was too tired to hold on to either of those feelings. In the end, he just wanted to feel nothing at all. No anger, no pride, no defiance, no loneliness, no love, nothing, just nothing. He just wanted to close his eyes and sleep. Either until it all was over, or just simply for forever. It didn’t matter.

Matt was just staring into space, when he heard the door. But he didn’t care to see who had just entered. As far as he was concerned, every time that door opened was bad news for him. It meant either physical pain or emotional torture and he wasn’t sure if he could take either of it anymore.

But the voice he heard instead, made him shift his eyes and focus on the person who had just entered. And there, his sister was standing. The one person he had cared so deeply for all his life, and now wasn’t sure what to feel about anymore. The main thing he felt was abandonment from her, and their parents. A pain that ran deep now.

And then Vic left, which made him feel a stab of desperation. In the past few days, she had been the only thing he had and she had been his only support. So her leaving, left him feeling incredibly vulnerable right now.

Sighing quietly, Matt slowly forced himself up into a sitting position, eyes averted into a different direction. “..Dara.”

One had to be as numb as the dead to not feel the tension of atmosphere between her and Matt. The last time that she was able to have a decent chat with Matt was that time when she left him. It wasn't a good time then, and she didn't do pretty much any good. And it seems like now, she'd be dawned useless again.

Dara clenched her jaw and moved closer, sitting by the side of his bed. "I heard what happened... I'm sorry you had to go through this..."

She wanted to reach out to him, touch his face, hold his hand or even hug him. But something pulls Dara away. So instead, she just kept her eyes on her lap and her hands, playing with the hem of her shirt.

Angry footsteps barges through the gates of the Rabbit's Foot Mansion. The eyes that were sweet, and wide with wonder are now blazing with fury. She first know about the death of the girl, and upon hearing the main reason behind it, and another girl held captive for this bullshit, Dara just had enough of everything.

As kids, Dara had been pushed into training her by grandfather, abiding by all his rules and looking up at him like every his words were law. He looked at her like she's the answer to everything, like she can save all of humanity; as if she is his most prized possession. And Dara had liked the attention. Until Matt had been born. Upon knowing that he's a boy, the joy on her grandfather's face was something that she has never seen before. He was highly delighted and she remembered hearing him say as he held Matt for the first time: "Finally, a rightful heir."

And then it came clear to her. Matt grew up and became the new favourite. He barely notices her anymore and has always praised Matt on everything that he does. There was a budding jealousy until one day, she saw the ten-year old Matt crying by the back of their house. She saw a vulnerability that every kids have; after all, Matt is only a child. Since then, she swor she'd protect her baby brother. But it became the other way around. Matt matured, as he fully embraced the path that he was given. And in a way, he became her guide instead of her, doing so for him. He has turned himself into her grandfather's satisfaction.

Everyone bowed at the sight of her, as she flew open doors after doors, walking into the hallways of the mansion. Her grandfather was out on a meeting, probably some business deal again, and wasn't in the house. But Dara wasn't even worried about him. Sure her grandfather can have her killed in just a snap of her fingers, but he has also honed a fighter in her and she would make sure that she will send out her message to him before he gets her.

But what Dara did not expect was meeting the girl that they held captive to be Matt's wife.

Taking a deep breath, Dara open's Matt door, basically barging in with no intention of any cation and walked inside only to stop on her tracks with wide eyes as she saw Matt, cuddling beside a female who was also sleeping beside him. He has his arm wrapped around her waist, and his leg over hers while resting his head on her shoulder and snuggling by the crook of her neck. The girl, on the other hand, have her hand slightly buried through his hair and her cheek resting on top of his head.

Dara took a step back, and thought about coming back in a little while when the girl woke up. "Oh I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up..."

“No, it's okay." The girl had answered. Dara walked closer and was about to sit beside Matt but the girl started speaking once more, making Dara stop. "But... please don't wake him up. This is the first time that he was able to sleep properly since hearing the news, which was two days ago."

With a soft and gentle voice, the girl, who introduced herself as Victoria, told her everything that had happened. And then Dara headed to her parents instead.

"Did you know?" she asked firmly without even kissing her mother's cheeks. "Heard what-?" "You're living in the same house and you didn't know?! Matt was being forced to marry, and they even killed someone just to make him do so!"

It did not take much to grab her parents and pulled them up. As she was told earlier, her grandfather was out in a meeting but as the stormed into his office, turns out that he has just arrived from a deal gone bad. Blood splatters were on his suite and he looked rather exhausted. Dara has never seen him like this.

"What?" he said gruffly. Her father spoke up first. "What are you doing to my son?" Park Sohyun did not like the tone of the male's voice, neither does his words. All exhaustion from the elder's face turned into anger and he walked around from his table to walk close to her father. "Your son?! Pfft. You're barely there for your son. What son?" "We know you're forcing him to marriage, father. And involved an innocent life-" Sohee tried to slip in but instead, she received a roaring answer. "INNOCENT? That girl is one of Double Dragon's weapon. She's no innocent!" "And what about the girl that's with Matt right now?" Dara said, folding he arms tightly across her chest. "She's a payment from a debt." "You don't need to force them to get married though, grandfather. If you want, you can keep the girl, make her a helper. But don't put Matt in to this..." "He's just a child father.." "He's not yet ready."

But Sohyun was not having any of it. "Look at you three! Going against me! Who clothed you in those expensive bullshit? Who fed you fine cuisines? ME! And yet here you are, trying to to take the only remaining heir from me."

"We're not trying to take Matt from you, father..." Sohee stepped forward. "We're just saying you don't need to force him onto this. Give him more time, he'll find a better girl. Someone that he'd truly love, like the way that you loved Mother. Just give him time..."

"I DON'T HAVE TIME." Sohyun roared, turning his back on them "I'm dying. Cancer. Incurable. I cannot let this clan die with me."

A bit dazed, Dara walked back to Matt's room. If he's awake, then great. If not, then she'd wait for him. She wanted to talk to Jun, she needed to talk to Jun. But before she let herself crumble over the overwhelming turn of events, Dara decided it best to make sure that her baby brother is okay, at the very least. Opening the door, Dara walked in and, well. The once cuddling couple are now separated, with Victoria, now just standing up and excusing herself.

"Matt..."

Distress ||| Dara x Star

Avatar

Sighing, she leaves the phone in favor of cleaning herself up before the other arrived. If Dara saw her in this state, she’d definitely know something was up and Star wasn’t sure if she was ready to deal with that just yet. Don’t get her wrong, she loved the older to bits, but she could get a bit overwhelming at times and with Star on edge, she feared she’d snap at the other.

The next hour or so sees her finishing off her tea and cleaning the kitchen, the living room and her room as well. She showers quickly, not wanting to linger in fear of the other arriving and just letting herself in. So, with wet hair, she dresses in denim shorts and a simple black tee before making her way back to her living room and settling on the couch.

Her head tilts back as she stares at the ceiling, her nails tapping on the screen of her phone as she waited. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait very long as the device began to vibrate. Slowly exhaling, she swipes her thumb across the screen and brings it to her ear. The high pitched voice that filters through has her wincing and she slightly moves the phone away from her. “Hello, Dara. You and your sweet tooth, hm? Anyway, come on up. I’ll be here.”

Pocketing the phone, Star stands and stretches, hoping to rid herself of any tension. Taking a deep breath, she mentally prepares herself for what may happen. Perhaps it’s an irrational thought, but Star knows how Dara can get. She’s very protective, her motherly instincts always taking hold. Most of the time it’s a good feat to have, but maybe not now.

Star’s always viewed the older as an older sister figure, possibly even a mother figure. And in some ways she’s grateful for that; grateful that there’s been someone to turn to in times of need, but she’s grown now. She’s a grown woman and she’ll be damned if she has people (mainly just Dara and Matt), watching over her like she would break. She doesn’t need that and she mostly certainly doesn’t want it.

The soft knock on the door interrupts her train of thought and she exhales once more before striding over to the door and opening it. “Dara, so nice of you to stop by. Come in.”

Dara didn’t have to wait long after she knocked on the door. She heard footsteps right after and then there’s Star opening the door for her. “Star!” with much enthusiasm, Dara wrapped her free hand around the younger one’s neck and pulled her in a hug and at the same placing a peck on her cheek.

Growing up in a mansion full of men, with no sister and a mother who has always been busy shaping her into the heir that she was supposed to be, Star became the girl that Dara turn in her girly antics to. She’s confident to say that Star is her first muse, dressing the younger one since her first prom and knowing what best would look on her. Her very own human barbie, much to Star’s dismay.

Not wasting any time, the older woman walked straight to the living room and placed the bag of donuts and an additional milk tea for each of them on the table. “Matt told me about you, entering the racing scene” she then started, the high-pitch, cheerful voice now turned into a serious and rather deep one. She decided to cut the sugars and headed straight to business. “Our cousin could help you. I don’t know what you need and what you would need, but Yonghwa is a pro at it so if you want, I can refer you to him”
