I’m going for work this week and I have a few hours to myself after my flight lands. Anything I should absolutely see/eat? Looking at you, US friends kiss-distinctly-american and mimesandpunishment – have you ever been there?
I’ve never been but whiteguyswithseverehair my resident Michigan expert may have some insight.
Oh, I can tell you about Detroit! I would say go to the Detroit Institute of Arts (there's a Diego and Frida show right now). Food: Slow's bbq, Detroit Soul Veg, Xochimilco, or get a real coney dog (Lafayette is my choice but their rivals National Coney are right next door). Go see the river walk and look at Canada. Heidelberg project is obvious but it is great/weird. The Motown museum is incredible if you are a music buff. The tigers are playing the Orioles this weekend - definitely see a game if you can. If you want to travel outside the city limits for an afternoon, go to Dearborn for the best middle eastern food and maybe a trip to Greenfield Village. I can share more but if you only have an afternoon I would start with those.
