I just found this note on my phone from my senior year of highschool. I really needed to read this tonight, thanks 17 year old Anna, we’re still working it out.

“Vyvanse  Shower 30min Genetics 1.30hr English 30min Gov 30min

Doonnnttt be a dumbass pleasee?

Do meaningful work, if it doesn’t feel right, think about why and read poetry and listen to the masters, try to find meaning in it, if you can’t, move on to more meaningful work an love life. Happy and Hardworking; you’ll make it through. If your work is miserable and trite, your life will become miserable and trite and meaningless and worthless. You’re not stuck. You are not employed to the school. This is YOUR EDUCATION. Do it right! Read outside of class and nurture your passion! That’s what colleges want I promise. Don’t worry too much about college. You’re set. You’ve got 30k, a decent gpa, a 28 on the ACT. And you will be able to write a kickass admission essay if you follow your heart, your passion, every every day. Suck the marrow out of life come on! You don’t have to be miserable, you don’t have to have straight A’s. Get a solid education that you know is true and arduous too. It’ll help you figure out stuff. Look, do what you’re passionate about, take a year off with americorps then worry about higher education. This is YOUR TIME to grow into the person YOU WANT to be. Don’t follow the same path school has every other kid marching on. Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expect of you. Alright? Alright? Alright? Do Shiver’s and Avalon’s homework as soon as you get home if it riles you up, which it should. Then, if you feel inspired to do further research do it! While you’re not yet sleepy! Not just crappy online articles, but research papers and original sources. Then later, do genetics and chemistry as fast as possible. For the gpa and the beauty you can find in it. Don’t break your back over it though. Do statistics thoroughly because it’s important, useful, and true. Every every day do some work for shivers and Avalon. Get as much out of these wonderful people while you have the chance. Suck the marrow out of life, yolo. Look, what do you want to be? An educated, passionate, loving adult probably associated with teenagers or children’s education. What is the best way to prepare for that? Listen to your soul, think about it, so you will remember it when you’re older because this is the only time you will be like this. A teen. Be passionate, loving, and track down your education and attack it and make it make you giddy. Because life is so cool right now, I mean really, don’t let everything get ya down. Everything will be alright. Even with bad grades and bad discussions. No one wants to hurt you, do your best."

Still appreciating this in the year of our lord 2022

My grandmother once told me, ‘Relationships are work, honey, and they aren’t 50/50. Some days when I get up I only feel like giving 10%, then your granddaddy has to give 90% that day. But there is always 100% love.'”

Today we remember a the artist Miriam Schapiro who passed away this weekend. Schapiro is a pioneering feminist artist who, with Judy Chicago, founded the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts in 1971, the first program of its kind to encourage women to make art from their personal experiences. A leader in the Pattern and Decoration movement, Schapiro is known for her “femmages,” or collage paintings, which aim to reclaim traditional handicrafts associated with women’s work, such as embroidery and sewing.

This large-scale painting was part of an ongoing Collaboration series begun in the mid-1970s, in which Schapiro dialogues with and pays homage to famous women artists, in this instance Frida Kahlo, whose self-portrait The Broken Column, 1944, is reproduced in the center. Stylistically this painting mimics the look of a collage, recalling Schapiro’s long-standing commitment to the belief that decorative elements and women’s work are viable artistic means to express female experience, having both political and subversive potential.

See more of Schapiro’s works in our collection here.

“So, now I shall talk every night. To myself. To the moon. I shall walk, as I did tonight, jealous of my loneliness, in the blue-silver of the cold moon, shining brilliantly on the drifts of fresh-fallen snow, with the myriad sparkles. I talk to myself and look at the dark trees, blessedly neutral. So much easier than facing people, than having to look happy, invulnerable, clever. With masks down, I walk, talking to the moon, to the neutral impersonal force that does not hear, but merely accepts my being. And does not smite me down.”                                        Happy birthday, Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932)

no other person on this planet was made for you, they were made for themselves. love is all about choices. no one is going to be perfect for you, and i think we need to stop raising everyone on the belief that someone out there, just one other person in the whole world, was “made for you” because it isn’t true. no one is made for you, besides you. other people belong to themselves. if you want to make it work with someone, it’s about hard work, understanding, compassion, communication, and choice

the universe has existed for billions of years and by a coincidence we ended up living at the same time. that counts for something.
