It was brought to my attention the other day, that Pewey shippers were getting some serious grief about liking this ship. Mostly from the Rose/Pearl shippers, but that’s besides the point.
I was going through the Episodes and thinking. “Well, I can see why people ship it and why people DON’T ship it. But, in truth there’s really no harm being done here. Yeah, Bill has flirted and made flirtatious comments about our Beloved Pearl, about her being “The hot one.”. But, in all these attempts, he’s been shot down and he walks off in defeat, but he’s not really insisting that Pearl needs to take interest in him as well. And with light being shed on recent episodes, Pearl likes to be complimented on her wit and skill rather than her looks and beauty. So, there’s the dislike for Mister Dewey.
But, even so. As fans we ship like there’s no tomorrow. I can see this ship working because Dewey is just a nervous wreck who want’s a chance to hold an intelligent woman’s hand.
Well, aside from that, I’m here to give you a headcanon of mine that would make this couple work.
I think the the reason that Pearl isn’t into Bill is because of course, She’d rather be praised for her intelligence rather than her Beauty, but also I think it’s because She won’t let go of her feelings for Rose.
One Day Pearl gets fed up with Bill’s flirting and gifts and stops him, saying that She’s really not sorry to inform him that she’ll probably never return his feelings in the way he wants her to, because there is a “someone else”. That someone else being Rose, and also because that Humans can’t last forever, but Gems can. Pearl continues on saying that even though Rose has been gone for years, there’s no way she’d let her feelings for the Gem go because of their bond they made while here on earth. That and that the pain from losing Rose is still very vivid in her mind. She apologizes, not for turning Bill down, but for the fact that he probably can’t understand her pain.
Bill just stands there and replies simply. “I do understand.” He gets emotional and tries to laugh it off. Of course Pearl is confused, but he explains to her that He to has lost someone he very much loved and cared about. His wife, and Buck’s Mother. He tells Pearl that his Wife had given Birth to Buck and passed away only hours later from giving birth to their only son. He tell pearl that he’d give anything to have his wife back, but he’d never give up his son for anything. And to that Pearl is a bit shocked, and becomes regretful for her words. He shakes his head and laughs, to Pearl’s confusion. “I guess that makes me strong.” he says, making Pearl a bit stand offish, but understanding. Bill apologizes and says he won’t bother her again. He gives her something to think about before he leaves.
Saying that, Humans are stronger in the aspect of losing someone. That she’s right, that humans don’t last forever, that’s why they love a lot more and try their best to move on. That there’s always time to grieve a lost loved one, but that there’s not always time to start over.
