The tropical herbaceous perennial plant Etlingera elatior (torch ginger, ginger flower, red ginger lily, torchflower, torch lily, wax flower, wild ginger) needs a warm, humid climate. It produces a spreading clump with dramatic flowers which can be eaten when in bud having a crisp and succulent texture.

The non-hardy/tender shrub Brugmansia suaveolens (angel's trumpet, datura) has trumpet-shaped flowers in summer and autumn. These flowers have a wonderful night-scent.

The dazzlingly bright, rounded, orange flowers of Kniphofia rooperi (red-hot poker) appear late in the season and it may not start flowering until well into October. This hardy evergreen perennial has long green strappy foliage and thrives in a sheltered sunny spot with good moist well drained soil.
