The Aimless Musings of a UVM Grad Student

Carrie. 23. Books, books, and more books. Gardening, the smell of warm dirt,  and the poetry of growing things. Pots simmering on the stove and bread rising in the oven.

anyway, the 8 hour workday and the concept of “8 hours work, 8 hours rest, 8 hours recreation” is outdated and based on the lives and needs of married straight men who had a wife at home doing all the unpaid domestic labor, childcare, and elderly care. We should all be fighting for a 4 hour workday tbh

They did an experiment with a 6 hour workday in Gothenburg, on a nursing home. The staff became happier and healthier and the elderly also became happier and more content because the staff could focus more on their needs when they weren’t overworked and tired. The staff felt they had more time and energy towards the elderly.

Recently there was an article about a care home in Stockholm were they “””over hired””” (I would argue they just hired enough people), that is they added 1,5 full time staff member. There was an economic gain, not only in health for the workers but also with fewer temps, less overtime and less time wasted on constantly educating new people.

The 8 hour workday was met with the same ridicule a 6 hour workday would. Once, the upper class thought that 14 hour days were reasonable because the poor would just get into trouble if they had time off. Even when there’s actually net gain from caring about their workers, employers prefer making them miserable and paying the cost in new hires, medical costs and poor performance. People have fought and died for our free time and our weekends, even when we know a healthy worker is a healthy company.

So it’s not strange, nor unbelievable, to take that fight again. There’s nothing holy or special with an 8 hour workday. It isn’t set in stone. It could be done.

Things to bring back in books:

  • Chapter titles
  • Actually having a synopsis on the back instead of reviews no one will read

Some excellent additions from the notes:

  • Maps
  • Indexes of characters and places with pronunciations
  • Numbering books in a series on the spine
  • Tables of contents

I can’t remember the last time I picked up a book, saw nothing but reviews on the back, and didn’t immediately just give up and put it back down. There’s supposed to be a summary on the back for a REASON!

“jealousy is so disgusting” “anger is so toxic” did u know? these are emotions every human has

I’ve always been a fan of an analogy I heard once. Your emotions are like one of the lights on your car’s dash. When one of them turns on, it means you need to check under the hood and fix them. It’s not bad that the light turned on, per se, and it doesn’t always mean something is broken. But what IS toxic, dangerous, and likely to break something, is when you let that light stay on, pretending it’s normal, until that braking fluid finally fails and you crash into someone, or your engine fails completely.

Feel jealous. Feel anger.

Just don’t let it fester. You need to look inside of yourself, find out why you’re feeling the way you are, and bring yourself to a satisfied, stable state of mind. You can look at philosophy, meditation/introspection, religion, or actual therapy, or at least talking to someone about it. You’ll find you’re much more content and happy when you do something about those feelings, and come to some sort of conclusion or resolution.

That is a  wonderful way of looking at it, thankyou. Makes me feel better about myself when I DO feel that way.

So I bought lemonade from these little girls’ lemonade stand and as I was leaving one of them yelled “You’re welcome for the lemonade and good luck fighting the dragon!” so now I’m slightly concerned about how the rest of my day is going to go

Seanan are you starting ANOTHER series?!

Because I’d read this one too, sounds great.

orange juice is the superior beverage bc it makes ur tongue feel like u ate a bunch of ants which reminds me of my childhood when I would put ants in my mouth and eat em except this time it tastes good too

Hey op I think you’re probably allergic to citrus?

is. this not what oj is supposed to make ur tongue feel like

Did you know that if your mouth itches when you eat kiwis, it is not from hairs left over on the fruit after you peel it? I didn’t until I was about 26 or so!

Confusingly, pineapple is supposed to feel like that, the damn thing is attempting to digest you right back.

im so thankful for Christine Sydelko speaking out about this and being a positive fat idol

I’ve been dealing with that third one a LOT at my local dentist’s office, and it’s weird. I was tipped back a bit too steeply waiting for my root canal to start (not fun) and I asked the girl to tip me a bit forward, gesturing to my chest and saying “I got a lotta weight there!” because, well, I do. I have big boobs, it’s just a practical reality I deal with. She immediately goes “Oh no you’re BEAUTIFUL! Just the way you are!” and in my head I’m like “Yeah well I’m beautiful and can’t breathe tip me the fuck up please!” lol

I’m used to being the ‘ignored’ sort of fat person, people have not gone out of their way to be nice to me before and it’s strange. On the one hand I want to be like, hey, you weren’t trying to be mean and that’s a start. But on the other hand, I’m not talking about my looks when I say things that are just true. I have red hair, I have big boobs, I really like coffee, these are just truths that do not need to be affirmed by dental assistants despite their well meaning nature.

Also if I can’t breathe I’m not going to be very beautiful I’m gonna be dead.
