The scent of sandalwood stirs up emotions for Wei WuXian and it's just so cute!

The chapter where WWX is left alone in LWJs living quarters the jingshi, after being dragged to the Cloud Recesses, is one of my favourites. I think a lot happens in this chapter in terms of WWX's emotions and his feelings for LWJ begin to truly surface once more.

Chapter 11:

There's something about the scene that makes my heart flutter. It's such a small little thing, but I find it so poignant. Although sandalwood isn't something WWX could associate a memory to at first, he can't quite understand why it is stirring up his emotions. His thoughts then lead to LWJ, as he realises that he smells like sandalwood also. The fact that the scent of sandalwood can evoke such a feeling in WWX is so sweet. I feel like his heart ached slightly as he subconsciously remembered smelling this fragrance on LWJ in his first life and it made him feel a little sad. Calling up the deep-rooted feelings he actually has for LWJ and the lingering sadness, tinged with regret that he subconsciously has for not acting on his true feelings in his first lifetime. As I've said before, MXTX is a master at saying so much, with such few words.

I love how in denial WWX is at this point. He has very clearly been moved by the fragrance, but then goes on to say his mind only wandered to thoughts of LWJ because he had nothing else to do... Who do you think you're kidding Wei Ying!? Again, just as he thinks about LWJ, he is drawn nearer to the scent because his true feelings are surfacing once more and his desire to be close to the scent that awakens such feelings, and in turn LWJ himself, is involuntary, calling from deep within. Sadly his thoughts are soon distracted by the loose floorboard and the hidden booze!

Then Wei Wuxian was like “He’s my son! I gave birth to him myself!”

And Lan Wangji was immediately like “Oh okay I guess he IS my kid and I AM his dad and now I am going to buy him Every Toy because it is my right as his father to spoil him.”
