i keep hearing about this alleged lyricism but am not seeing it? "my covert narcissism i disguise as altruism" is the one i see the sw*fties trotting out the most but leonard cohen had "if thine is the glory then mine must be the shame" "i struggled with some demons they were middle-class and tame" "there's a lover in the story but the story's still the same/there's a lullaby for suffering and a paradox to blame/but it's written in the scriptures and it's not some idol claim/you want it darker/we kill the flame"

pick any line from that single song and it clears her entire discography so why are people insisting that we must Acknowledge the Writing when the writing is there for everyone to see.

i liked her when i was 13! and then i grew up, and she didn't

#and that's just one top of mind artist#i think even lana clears her in terms of writing#why are we lying? why are we just lying like that?#she's fine! maybe better than the average pop girlie but is it really something to write home about?

i think part of what gets lost when people stress the importance of reading is that it's not purely about imagination or living in someone else's (fictional) head for a while (though this is important). no one is trying to force feed people anna karenina or all of dickens. no one is waiting in line to make you feel stupid or shame you for not liking / being intimidated by whatever assigned reading you were given at 15 and reliving your worst classroom experiences.

all anyone is asking you is that you DON'T outsource your ability to make sense of things to someone else just because it's convenient!!!!!!

like, i really don't know how to emphasize this enough but stressing the importance of reading is not trying to brainwash you into liking some dead dude, it's about building enough discernment in the way you engage with words--anywhere--to recognize when 2+2=4 despite how desperately & eloquently someone is trying to tell you they equal fish.
